The United States will face Japan in the finals of the Women’s World Cup on Sunday at 7:00 pm. Japan advanced to the title game in a heart-wrenching semi-final. The game was tied 1-1 with under a minute remaining in stoppage time. The Japanese were driving to the goal when Laura Bassett stuck out her foot to deflect the ball. Â In an unlucky twist, she accidentally sent the ball into her own goal and the Japanese won 2-1. Bassett was inconsolable after the game and needed help from her teammates to leave the field. Her coach and other athletes have been sympathetic and expressed their support. Former player, Brandi Chastain tweeted, “you’ve been amazing. UR fight&determination are your true character.I know the pain of an own goal but it won’t define U.”
The US and Japan met in the finals of the World Cup in 2011 when Japan won the title on penalty kicks.
