Manning Better Leader Than Roethlisberger, Love Trade Looks Like Cavs, Rose On A Mission

FOOTBALL

Ben RoethlisbergerIn the NFL, former Steelers wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders made some controversial comments to the media a few days ago.  Sanders came right out and said that his new quarterback, Bronco’s Peyton Manning, was a “far better leader” than his former QB Ben Roethlisberger.  Sanders said that Manning was always ready to practice, as opposed to Roethlisberger who could be “tough to find”. Current star Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown had an issue with his former teammate’s comments.  Brown said that “you don’t throw your quarterback under the bus, the guy who makes you who you are.”  Either way, both Sanders and Brown are bound for breakout years.

BASKETBALL

In the NBA, it looks like the Minnesota Timberwolves have narrowed the Kevin Love trade talks to just the Cleveland Cavaliers.  It was reported that the Bulls and Warriors were also trying hard to trade for Love, but the Wolves think the best value is with the Cavs.  It’s likely that Love will leave in free agency next year, so the Wolves may as well get what they can for him.  If they can get a future superstar like Andrew Wiggins, it may be worth sending Love out of town.

Derrick RoseFinally, in the NBA, former Memphis head coach John Calipari, now with Kentucky, has said that the Bull’s Derrick Rose is “on a mission”.  The former MVP has been injured the most part of the past two seasons, but Rose is turning a lot of heads during the Team USA practices.  Calipari coached Derrick Rose while at Memphis, when Rose led them to the National Championship game.  Look for Rose to have a major comeback season this fall.

Gordon’s Second Hand Smoke, Raiders Rumored Move To San Antonio, Durant Happy About Lebron, Manning’s Dance Moves

FOOTBALL

In the NFL, Cleveland Browns star receiver Josh Gordon has been in the limelight this summer, but for all the wrong reasons.  Gordon failed a drug test a few months ago, and faces a season-long suspension and about a month ago, he was arrested for a DUI. That doesn’t help his case for getting a chance to play this season.  On Tuesday, however,  Gordon came out telling the media that his drug-test failure was due to second hand smoke.  It sounds a little farfetched, but the NFL is going to hear his appeal, as Gordon tries to reduce his suspension.

Elsewhere in the NFL, rumors are swirling that (and these are just rumors) the Oakland Raiders are considering a possible move to… not Los Angeles, but San Antonio.  Apparently, they think they have a pretty strong market in San Antonio, and given the wild attendance at Spurs games, the Raiders think they might be able to sway the whole town to selling out Raiders’ games.  Of course this is just talk at this point, but it would be an interesting direction to go in.

BASKETBALL

Kevin DurantFinally, in the NBA, Kevin Durant told the media that he was happy about the LeBron move.  Sure, he meant that he was happy for his friend going home, but it’s possible he is also speaking a little selfishly knowing that the mighty Miami Heat have fallen.  Then, Durant was asked about his free agent plans in 2016.  Durant said he didn’t know what the future holds, but the Washington Wizards are licking their chops hoping that Durant follows LeBron’s direction, and moves back home.

Senior VP Of Labor Speaks Out On Rice, Lebron Wearing #23, Sterling To Sell Clippers

FOOTBALL

In the NFL, after the out cry about the short length of the Ray Rice suspension (only 2 games), the League has decided to comment on the issue.  The SeniorVP of Labor Policy came out and said that they think the suspension length is fair, especially because they have listened to all pertinent parties involved and made an informed decision.  As for the fact that this doesn’t “send a message”, the NFL thinks that players are not going to go out and commit domestic violence just because they see the punishment is only 2 games.  This is still a controversial issue, and will continue to be discussed.

BASKETBALL

Michael JordanIn the NBA, LeBron has made another important ‘decision’.  This time… about his jersey number.  LeBron was deciding between wearing his #6 jersey he wore in Miami or reverting back to #23 which he wore in Cleveland.  Ultimately, he decided to go back to his roots, and wear #23.  Of course, everyone wanted the opinion of the greatest athlete to ever wear #23:  Michael Jordan.  And Jordan kept it simple, saying he was fine with it.

Donald SterlingFinally in the NBA, the judge has made a ruling, allowing Clippers co-owner Shelly Sterling to finalize the sale of the Los Angeles Clippers.  Donald Sterling fought tooth-and-nail to try and keep his team, but a $2billion offer from Microsoft billionaire Steve Ballmer looked like it was going to get the green light from the league.  And on Monday, we saw an end to it, with the judge ruling to allow Shelly Sterling to sell the team for $2billion.  The Clippers are headed in a very exciting direction.  However, it was also reported yesterday that their star forward Blake Griffin has a back fracture.  Yikes!

Rice Story and Short Suspension Still Upsetting, Baseball Hall Of Fame Ceremony

FOOTBALL

Ray RiceThe Ray Rice story is making people angry. The video of Ray dragging his girlfriend out of the elevator has gone viral and is really upsetting.  In addition to how upsetting it is to see the footage, it’s shocking that  the Commissioner of the NFL, Roger Goodell, only suspended him for 2 games for violating the NFL personal conduct policy. Fans are outraged that this horrendous behavior didn’t have more of a penalty.

BASEBALL

Frank ThomasFrank Thomas, Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine along with managers Bobby Cox, Tony LaRussa and Joe Torre were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday. It was an emotional day for all particularly Frank Thomas who choked back tears. His message was clear and an indirect message to kids to resist the temptation of steroids:

“To all you kids out there, just remember one thing from today,” he said. “There’s no shortcuts to success. Hard work. Dedication. Commitment. Stay true to who you are.”

Knoblauch Arrested For Assault, Linsanity Over In LA, Ray Rice’s Attack Short Sentence

BASEBALL

The Minnesota Twins were set to induct their former beloved star Chuck Knoblauch to their team Hall of Fame.  They even planned an entire induction ceremony for him, which was set to include other famous Twins from the early 90s (Knoblauch’s era).  Unfortunately, the Twins have decided to cancel that ceremony on account of the fact that Knoblauch was arrested this week for assaulting his ex-wife.  This is also not the first time Knoblach has been arrested for assault.  Clearly, while he was great for the organization, the Twins want to make Knoblauch a part of the past.

BASKETBALL

Jeremy LinJeremy Lin was welcomed by the Los Angeles Lakers yesterday.  And Lin wanted to make it clear that the whole “Linsanity” period is behind him.  Lin said he had no interest in living that hype banner season, and is dead focused on being a great player on the court.  He is excited to play with Kobe Bryant, one of his heroes, and wants to concentrate on winning games.  Lin is relieved that his the expectations of having to be a superstar all the time is behind him.

FOOTBALL

Ray RiceIn the NFL, many remember Baltimore Ravens’ running back Ray Rice’s violent attack on his fiance a few months ago. He was actually dragging her unconscious out of the elevator. Some thought he would be suspended for the year, and others thought he would likely be cut from the Ravens, as they didn’t want to associate with such a player. But on Thursday, the ruling came out, and Rice will be suspended for ONLY 2 GAMES! That’s nothing, and many are complaining that clearly the NFL doesn’t care about that type of heinous behavior. Sure, we don’t know the whole story about what happened on that elevator, but it still appeared worse than just a slap on the wrist, two-game suspension.

Ray Allen Looks At Cavs, Jamaal Charles Contract Extension, Bash Brothers Still Won’t Reconcile

BASKETBALL

Ray AllenIn the NBA, everyone is well aware that the Cavs are trying to court Kevin Love, but now it looks like a familiar face may also be joining the Cavs.  Apparently, there is strong interest on Ray Allen’s part to join LeBron in Cleveland.  Allen is a smart player who can still shoot a clutch three.  Plus, he knows that LeBron is where the limelight is, and playing with LeBron is good for media exposure.  It’s not a done deal yet, but this feels like it could happen.

FOOTBALL

Jamaal CharlesThe Kansas City Chiefs had a comeback year last season.  The absolutely stellar play of their star running-back Jamaal Charles definitely contributed.  Since Charles played so well, naturally he wanted a bigger contract.  And he definitely got one.  Charles received a 2-year extension and more money and will be reporting to training camp.  The Chiefs are hoping to be even better next season.

BASEBALL

McGwire & ConsecoYou may remember the “Bash Brothers” from the Oakland Athletics in the late 80’s:  Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco.  These guys used to crush home runs left and right.  Unfortunately, the two don’t speak today primarily because of a 2005 book put out by Jose Canseco.  Canseco listed McGwire as using performance-enhancing drugs and put his home run record under the microscope.  Conseco apologized to McGwire during last weekend’s 25th anniversary of the 1989 World Series victory. Ultimately, in 2010, McGwire said he did use performance-enhancing drugs, but he still doesn’t forgive Canseco for naming him in his book.  “It’s too late” for any kind of reconciliation, McGwire said.

Tyree Controversial Hire For Giants, New Baby Name Bowden Saint-Clair, Love Still In Play

FOOTBALL

David TyreeIn some controversial news out of the NFL, the New York Giants are under fire for the recent hiring of David Tyree as director of player development after a free background check.  Tyree is a New York icon for his now famous “helmet catch” against the Patriots in the Super Bowl.  That catch allowed the Giants to get the game-winning touchdown.  Tyree is also very homophobic, saying a few years ago that he would sell his Super Bowl ring if it meant gays couldn’t get married.  So when the Giants asked him onboard, they got an earful from the Human Rights Capital Campaign.

And in some strange, but cute news… Minnesota Vikings Christian Ponder has selected a name for his new daughter, and it’s certainly an unconventional one.  Ponder has decided to name his daughter in honor of his legendary coach at Florida State, Bobby Bowden.  The baby’s name is Bowden Saint-Clair.   Not exactly a traditional name, but maybe it will catch on and become a Top Baby Name for 2015.

BASKETBALL

In the NBA, everyone is expecting Kevin Love to be a Cav, but it isn’t a done deal yet. The Golden State Warriors are still very much in play, and now the Chicago Bulls are making a big push for Love.  Their package is rumored to feature up-and-coming forward Taj Gibson and the sharp-shooting and defensive Jimmy Butler.  The Cavs potential offer of Andrew Wiggins for Love is still appealing, but the T-Wolves may want more proven players to build around now.

Ovechkin/Kirilenko Romance No More, Coach K To Trade Wiggins, Dungy’s Controversial Remarks About Sam

HOCKEY

Alex OvechkinThe Russian dream romance between hockey superstar Alex Ovechkin and tennis star Maria Kirilenko… is no more.  They were recently engaged, and everybody rejoiced in the idea of the toothless wonder (Ovechkin) marrying Russian tennis royalty.  But on Monday the wedding was called off by Kirilenko citing there were “a lot of reasons” for her decision.

BASKETBALL

In the NBA, with a potential trade still looming between the Cavs and the Wolves (i.e. Andrew Wiggins for Kevin Love), other basketball personalities are weighing in.  On Monday, Coach K (Duke’s coach, and coach of the United States National Team) said he would “definitely trade Wiggins for Love).  Sure, Wiggins has potential, but Love is about to enter his basketball prime, and he is the type of teammate LeBron needs to win rings.

FOOTBALL

Tony DungyIn the NFL, former coach Tony Dungy is making some controversial news. He said that he would NOT have drafted the first openly gay football player, Michael Sam. Dungy said it wasn’t because Sam shouldn’t get to play, but rather all the media attention around him.  Dungy said he wouldn’t want to deal with all of that, and would find the media circus a nuisance.  Then again, some believe that Dungy’s comments make the St. Louis Rams look that much more brave and impressive for drafting Sam.

Rory Mcllroy wins Open, Wiggins May Stay a Cav, Glen Rice Jr. Wins Summer League MVP

GOLF

Rory McllroyTypically all eyes are on Tiger Woods, but we can’t forget that there is another marketable force in golf:  Rory McIlroy.  Mcllroy is newly single, good-looking, and an incredible golfer.  And this weekend, he played marvelously and won the Open Championship.  Expect to be seeing Mcllroy in many more commercials.  Winning this big tournament is a major step towards him becoming a household name in the sporting community.

BASKETBALL

Andrew WigginsIn the NBA, there is still  speculation that the Cavs overall #1 pick Andrew Wiggins may be headed to Minnesota along with last year’s #1 overall pick Anthony Bennett in exchange for T-Wolves star Kevin Love.  Yesterday it was reported, however,  that the Cavs are very close to signing Wiggins to a contract.  This doesn’t necessarily mean that Wiggins will stay in a Cavs jersey, as Cleveland can still trade his contract away, but it does make you wonder if the Cavs are planning a title run WITH Wiggins.  After all, with LeBron’s tutelage, he could develop very quickly.

Finally, in some NBA Summer League news, all the young players are trying to prove that they either deserved to be drafted or SHOULD HAVE been drafted.  These guys play hard right out of the gate, all vying to catch the coach’s eye and hopefully get some playing minutes next season.  That’s why it’s a pretty big deal who gets Summer League MVP.  And yesterday, that honor was bestowed upon the Washington Wizards’ Glen Rice Jr., son of the great Miami Heat and Charlotte Hornets 3-point shooter Glen Rice.  That’s just one more weapon for the Wizards who are trying to make a run at the title next year.

Love for Wiggins in Cleveland, Boozer to LA, Chasing Rory in Open

BASKETBALL

Andrew WigginsIn the NBA, the hot rumor of the day is that the Cleveland Cavaliers MIGHT be bringing Kevin Love to town to pair with LeBron & Kyrie:  The New Big 3.  And on Thursday it was reported that the Cavs may send the #1 overall draft pick, Andrew Wiggins, to the Minnesota Timberwolves in return.  Wiggins could be a superstar, and the Cavs may regret letting him go.  But Love is a proven star, and entering the prime of his career.  The Cavs can’t squander LeBron’s prime years waiting for Wiggins to grow up.  Plus, the T-Wolves would relish bringing in a potential superstar like Wiggins.  This trade may just happen soon.

Elsewhere in the NBA, the Chicago Bulls recently cut aging veteran Carlos Boozer.  But he wasn’t unemployed long, as the Los Angeles Lakers, thinking they have nothing to lose, took a chance on the vet.  They’re trying to assemble some type of team in LA during Kobe’s last years.  This team is in a rebuilding process, and they didn’t land any of the major free agents.  So they may as well roll out at least a watchable product to their fans.

GOLF

Rory McIlroyIt’s the open championship.  Tiger Woods has often done very well in this event, but this year, the whole pack is chasing pretty boy Rory McIlroy.   He has struggled in the past on Fridays in the Open Championship, and will have to keep his poise if he wants to keep his commanding lead.
