USA Wins Women’s World Cup With Carli Lloyd’s Historic Hat Trick, Matt Stonie New Hot Dog Eating Champion

SOCCER

Women's SoccerThe USA beat Japan in the Women’s World Cup in stunning fashion Sunday evening. Carli Lloyd scored three goals (called a hat trick) including one from midway up the field to lead the USA to a commanding 5-2 win. Lloyd earned the Golden Ball (equivalent to MVP) of the tournament. In a classy move, Lloyd took off her captain armband in the last few minutes of the game and gave it to Abby Wambach. Wambach came on the field as a substitute in the 79th minute of the game. Wambach is considered one of the greatest players in Women’s soccer. She is a two time Olympic Gold Medalist, 2012 FIFA Player of the Year and with 183 goals to her name, holds the record (male or female) for the most international goals in history. This is the USA’s third women’s world cup victory.

OTHER

In other sporting news, Matt Stonie beat the legendary Joey Chestnut over the weekend in the annual Nathan’s Famous Coney Island hot dog eating contest. Stonie wolfed down 62 hot dogs and buns to claim the title and upset Chestnut’s goal of a 9th straight victory. Both Stonie and Chestnut are from my hometown, San Jose, CA….cool!!!!
