Holtby’s Big Save And Capitals Even Series, Klay Thompson’s Chess Obsession

HOCKEY

Everyone is talking about Washington Capitals’ goalie Braden Holtby who saved the day with his third-quarter save in game 2 of the Stanley Cup. The Capitals tied the series against the Vegas Golden Knights one game each. Game 3 is on June 2nd at 8:00 pm ET.

BASKETBALL

The Golden State Warriors host the Cleveland Cavaliers for the first game of the NBA Championship at 9:00 pm tonight. There are many articles and stats about which team has the advantage and what players are doing to prepare for one of the biggest series of their career. The Wall Street Journal just came out with an article about Klay Thompson’s off-court obsession: Chess! Thompson plays chess every day (starting in grade school) and according to his childhood friend, “One thing about Klay is that he’s at his best when you back him into a corner. He’ll be playing loose, but once I show I’m a threat, he can really lock in.” According to the reporter, “Thompson plays basketball the way he plays chess”.

Williams Fierce Catsuit, LiAngelo Works Out W/Lakers, Colangelo’s Fake Accounts, Randall Out $60 Mill

TENNIS

Serena Williams gave birth last September, took some time off, and is now back on the court trying to win her 24th Grand Slam. An unseeded Williams won her first match at the French Open and will now face the #17 seed. Serena’s black Nike bodysuit with a red waistband made a statement. Serena responded by saying, “All the moms out there that had a tough pregnancy and have to come back and try to be fierce, in a middle of everything. That’s what this represents. You can’t beat a cat suit, right?”

BASKETBALL

LiAngelo Ball is back from Lithuania, and since he won’t be going back to UCLA (suspended by the Bruins for shoplifting during a team trip to China), is working on his NBA draft prospects. On Tuesday he worked out with the Los Angeles Lakers (where his brother Lonzo plays). LiAngelo also has a workout scheduled with the Golden State Warriors, but it’s unclear whether any team thinks he’s matured enough as a player to draft him.

In an odd story, there is circumstantial evidence that the Philadelphia 76ers President of Basketball Operations Manager Bryan Colangelo used five fake twitter accounts to criticize players such as the Sixers Joel Embiid and Markelle Fultz. Colangelo has denied the allegations and said, “This storyline is disturbing to me on many levels, as I am not familiar with any of the other accounts that have been brought to my attention, nor do I know who is behind them or what their motives may be in using them.”

In other 76ers news, Coach Brett Brown agreed to a 3-year extension with the team.

Cleveland Browns’ Safety, Damarious Randall, may be regretting his enthusiasm. He recently tweeted “if the Cleveland Cavaliers win the NBA Finals he’ll buy a jersey for anyone who retweets him”. He currently has over 643,000 retweets. At this rate, if the Cavs win, he’s on the hook for over $60 million dollars. (Jerseys cost $99.99 each)

BASKETBALL

An exciting weekend of basketball determined the NBA Finals matchup. For the 4th straight year, Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors will face LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

While the Cavs seemed to cruise into the finals in their game 7 win over the Boston Celtics, the Warriors struggled in the first half against the Houston Rockets (who were without Chris Paul). As they’ve been known to do during the playoffs, the Warriors came back strong in the third quarter, and the Rockets melted (missing 27 straight 3’s). According to Elias Sports, the game featured the most consecutive missed 3s in a playoff game in NBA history.

The Finals begin Thursday 9:00 pm. ET at Golden State.

HOCKEY

Warriors Haunting 4th Quarter And Loss, Danica Patrick To Host ESPY’s

BASKETBALL

With Steph Curry on fire in the 3rd quarter, Golden State logged a comfortable 10 point lead over the Houston Rockets heading into the 4th quarter. Unfortunately for the Warriors, however, they couldn’t connect down the stretch (tossing up 15 missed shots) and lost a crucial home game to tie the series 2-2. After their hauntingly bad 4th quarter and loss, the Warriors will now head to Houston for game 5 on Thursday. Even with the Rockets’ James Harden dropping a team-high 30 points, Curry seemed relaxed in his post-game interview when he said,  “There’s no panic. We’ve been here before”. Rockets 95, Warriors 92.

OTHER

Race car driver Danica Patrick will make history again on July 18th when she becomes the first woman to ever host the ESPY’s (ESPN’s famous awards show). Patrick etched her name in the history books already as the first female to have a top 5 finish in the Indianapolis 500 in 2005 and the fastest qualifying time for the Daytona 500 in 2013. Danica met her boyfriend Green Bay Quarterback Aaron Rodgers at the ESPY’s and has a fondness for the event. She said, “My first ESPYS was 2005, and I have been a fan, coming back every year since. It is the biggest night of the year for sports. Every year, I leave feeling so inspired! I am excited to be able to help celebrate, laugh and cry about the past year in sports with everyone. It’s going to be a great night and one full of more than a few surprises.”

Justify Wins Preakness, Knights Advance To Finals, Cavs Regroup, Curry Explodes & Scolded For Cursing

HORSE RACING

Justify held off some tough competition on another sloppy track to win the Preakness Stakes and capture the second leg of the Triple Crown. On June 9th at Belmont, Justify, trained by Bob Baffert, will attempt to become only the 13th horse in history to win the Triple Crown. At a distance of 1/2 mile, the Belmont is the longest of the 3 races and can prove challenging for a horse having raced hard the last 5 weeks. American Pharoah (also trained by Bob Baffert) won the Triple Crown in 2015, but before Pharoah, the last Triple Crown winner was in 1978.

HOCKEY

The expansion Vegas Golden Knights advance to the Stanley Cup Finals with a 4-1 series win over the Winnipeg Jets. The Knights are only the second expansion team from either the NHL, NBA, MLB, and NFL to reach a championship in an inaugural season. The Knights will play the winner of the Tampa Bay Lightning/Washington Capitals series. The Lightning are up 3-2 with game 6 on Monday.

BASKETBALL

The Cleveland Cavaliers were outplayed by the Boston Celtics in the first 2 games of the Eastern Conference finals but regrouped for game 3, came out with a 19 point first quarter lead and never looked back. LeBron helped the Cavs blow out the Celtics with 27 points and 12 assists, while Kevin Love added 14 rebounds. Cavaliers 116, Celtics 86.

In the Western Conference finals, Steph Curry exploded with 35-points and 7-7 FG’s in the 3rd quarter to propel the Warriors to a 2-1 series lead over the Houston Rockets. With Curry on fire and the hometown crowd going crazy, Curry uncharacteristically shouted out “This is my f—ing house!” after a successful drive.  Even though the crowd loved his enthusiasm, his mom scolded him after the game. According to Curry, “She already sent me two home videos, showing me the clip and playing it back. She was telling me how I need to wash my mouth out, saying to wash it out with soap. It’s a message I’ve heard before.” He went on to say, “She’s right. I gotta do better. I can’t talk like that.” Warriors 126, Rockets 85.
