Kobe’s Dear Basketball Retirement Letter, Seahawks Win, Gronk Down And Pats Defeated

BASKETBALL

Kobe Bryant 2The big news out of the sports world is Kobe Bryant’s announcement he will retire from the NBA.  Kobe put a posting on the Internet titled “Dear Basketball” in which he told the world “This season is all I have left to give. My heart can take the pounding. My mind can handle the grind but my body knows it’s time to say goodbye.”  Kobe had a unique career and will go down as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. The game will miss him.

FOOTBALL

In the NFL, the Seattle Seahawks and Pittsburgh Steelers are both trying their hardest to shake off a bad start to the season and secure a playoff spot.  The Steelers headed to Seattle this weekend and in the midst of the battle, the Seahawks lost tight end Jimmy Graham to a season-ending injury.  Oddly enough, once he went out, the Seahawks played better, and even though it was a scoring feast from both teams, the Seahawks came away with the victory.   Seattle 39, Pittsburgh 30.

In prime time, the Denver Broncos hosted the unbeaten New England Patriots.  Even though the Pats entered the game undefeated, they team is completely banged up and it seems like every week they lose one of their stars.  They first lost Dion Lewis, then Julian Edelman, and now… Rob Gronkowski.  In the 4th quarter, Gronk went down and had to be carted off the field.  We don’t know the seriousness of the injury yet, but it didn’t look good.  The Broncos were behind most of the game, but they surged back for a late lead.  Not surprisingly, the Pats tied the score to send the game into overtime.  The Broncos, led by QB Brock Osweiler battled the weather and got the ball to back-up running back CJ Anderson who scored the game winning touchdown.  The Pats are no longer undefeated.  Denver 30, New England 24.

Saturday Kids Korner, By My Son Lucas Korn

Basketball

In the NBA, the Golden State Warriors and the Philadelphia 76ers are going in two opposite directions. The warriors are at a record breaking start of 17-0 while the 76ers are not doing so well at a 0-17 start.

Lions Embarrass Eagles, Romo Injured Again In Loss To Panthers, Packers Retire Favre Jersey While Team Falls To Bears

FOOTBALL

In the first matchup on Thanksgiving Day, the Detroit Lions, with 3 TD’s from superstar wide receiver, Calvin Johnson, ran all over the Philadelphia Eagles.  Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford tied for his personal best by throwing for 5 scoring passes. The Eagles didn’t know what hit them. Lions 45, Eagles 14.

The second game, featured Panthers’ QB Cam Newton continuing to do what he does best, win. The unbeaten Carolina Panthers capitalized on the 3 interceptions returned for TD’s from Dallas QB Tony Romo. Romo may be out for good this season with the same injury (left collarbone) that sidelined him earlier in the year. With the win, the Panthers continue their perfect 11-0 season. Panthers 33, Cowboys 14.

Brett Favre & Bart Starr 2In a moving tribute at halftime Thursday evening during the the Chicago Bears-Green Bay game, the Packers unveiled Brett Favre’s name and jersey number next to the retired names and numbers of other Packers’ greats. Favre spoke about his love for the game and love for his teammates while former Packer great Bart Starr came out to the field to give him a celebratory hug. That emotional display was the highlight for the fans at Lambeau Field as the Packers failed to hold off the Bears. Chicago 17, Packers 13.

Warriors Best Start In NBA History, Manziel Demoted, Top 4 College Teams, Awesome Donuts To Wisconsin Police

BASKETBALL

The Golden State Warriors are certainly golden as have now secured their place in history as the team with the best start to an NBA season. With their route of the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night, they posted their 16th straight win for the season eclipsing the previous record held by the 1993 Houston Rockets and the 1948 Washington Capitols. Warriors’ coach Steve Kerr has been absent from the sidelines due to complications from spinal surgery but has still been a major presence for the team. He spoke to the players prior to the game and reminded them of their four core values:  joy, mindfulness, compassion, and competition. When the players have fun, they’re exhibiting joy, when they think through plays, they are mindful, when they get along and conduct themselves properly, they are compassionate and when they get on the court to win, they are competitive.  How do you not love this team?

FOOTBALL

In the NFL, the Cleveland Browns were on a bye last week, and one would assume that their starting quarterback Johnny Manziel would take the time to rest, recover, and study the playbook.  Unfortunately that wasn’t the case, as video emerged of Johnny Manziel partying in Texas.  In the video, he was holding a bottle of champagne, appeared to be drunk, and was singing into the camera.  The Browns were not so happy with this type of behavior and proclaimed that Manziel was not fit or responsible enough to be their starter.  They relinquished Manziel of his starting quarterback duties and demoted him to 3rd string QB.  This fall from grace for Manziel might be a sign that he won’t be back in a Browns uniform next season.

The new top 4 playoff rankings were released in college football. With some upsets and unimpressive wins this past weekend, there were a few shockers.  Notre Dame and Ohio State fell out of the top 4, while Oklahoma and Iowa jumped in. At this point in the season, it’s Clemson, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Iowa rounding out the bracket.  There is still controversy, however, as Oklahoma lost to a very weak Texas team, while Iowa hasn’t played any impressive teams yet.  It’s likely that the top 4 will change again at least once before the playoffs are set.
donuts2 2Finally, in a humorous story out of Wisconsin, a fan has sent 20 dozen coconut donuts to the police that ejected him from the game on Saturday.   A fan traveled from Los Angeles to see Wisconsin play.  When he tried to enter a section that was not what his ticket indicated, he was surrounded by police with 5.56 ammo and ejected from the stadium.  The fan claims he misread the ticket and the whole incident was a misunderstanding.  As a gesture of his feelings, he sent the cops 20 dozen coconut donuts. He said, “This was meant as a harmless way to show both my general gratitude for what you do (which is awesome), but slight disdain for my treatment Saturday (which was not so awesome). Donuts are awesome, but coconut donuts are not so awesome.  The Wisconsin police department had a good sense of humor and called the shipment “brilliant”.

Pats Still Undefeated, Brock Osweiler Will Lead Broncos, Les Miles Era May Be Over

FOOTBALL

In Monday Night Football between the Buffalo Bills and the New England Patriots, the Bills armed with a stronger defense, had hopes of upsetting the Patriots.  They did, in fact, come close and even had a chance to win toward the end, but couldn’t pull it together.  The banged up Pats eeked out a victory, and are now 10-0.  New England 20, Buffalo 13.

Robert Pattinson 2   Elsewhere in the NFL, after QB Brock Osweiler (who looks a bit like actor Robert Pattinson) took the Denver Broncos into a blisteringly cold Chicago and grabbed a win this past weekend, the Broncos are handing him the keys to the castle.  Yep, Osweiler has been named the starting quarterback when they face the Patriots next week.  The Broncos are hinting that the Peyton Manning era might be over, and we’ll be seeing an Osweiler led team.  Osweiler trained behind Manning for 3 full seasons which is the same situation as when Aaron Rodgers backed up legend Brett Favre in Green Bay.  Peyton Manning said he intends to play in 2016, but he may not be playing in a Broncos’ uniform.

In college football, sources are saying there is a very good chance that LSU and head coach Les Miles may split ways at the end of the season.  When you’re coaching for a big SEC program like LSU or Alabama, and they don’t win a national championship, the season is considered a failure.   Miles has kept LSU relevant for quite a while, but the fans and the LSU brass are tired of seeing Alabama hoisting up the trophy year after year.  LSU is also on a 3-game losing streak which is making the situation worse   If LSU does fire Miles, they will need a superstar backup as Miles is known for his strong recruiting.

Ohio State’s Big Loss, Packers Easy Win, Winston Crushes Philly, Romo Back With Win

FOOTBALL

In college football, there was a major shakeup in the tournament seedings this weekend as Michigan State beat Ohio State.  Ohio State can still potentially get to the final four, but this loss definitely hurts their chances.  The loss also opens up the possibility for another Big 12 team (maybe Oklahoma State or Baylor) to reach the final four bracket.
Aaron RodgersIn the NFL, the marquee game of the week was the Minnesota Vikings hosting the Green Bay Packers.  Aaron Rodgers and the Pack have always owned the Vikings, but this year, the Vikings look sharp.  Their star running back Adrian Peterson is having a solid year as is their QB, Teddy Bridgewater. But even though Aaron Rodgers has struggled lately, he’s still Aaron Rodgers, and he helped guide the Packers to a relatively easy win.  This Packers team is not as good as last year, but they can still eek out a win when they need to.  Green Bay 30, Minnesota 13.

Jameis WinstonIn Philadelphia, the Eagles were hoping to jump start their offense against Tampa Bay with QB Mark Sanchez running the ship.  He played well in the pre-season, and was now getting his chance to shine and possibly keep the starting QB job.  The only problem was the Buccaneers’ QB Jameis Winston turned into a formidable NFL quarterback.  He crushed the Eagles IN Philly, throwing for a career high 5 touchdown passes.  Winston is seemingly only going to get better, and Buccaneers fans should be excited.  Tampa Bay 45, Philadelphia 17.

Finally, in Miami, the Dolphins hosted the Dallas Cowboys, but more notably, we saw the return of QB Tony Romo.  Romo went down early in the season with a serious shoulder injury, and the Cowboys were unable to win a game without him.  The Cowboys, however, are still mathematically alive for the playoffs in a terrible NFC East division.  Romo had to dust off some cobwebs, but he connected with his all-pro wide receiver Dez Bryant for a touchdown. The Cowboys picked up the road win, and their quest to get to the playoffs is off to a good start.  Dallas 24, Miami 14.

Jags Pull Out Win, Hoyer Sidelined From Concussion, ESPN Air Ads For Movie, Warriors Win #13

FOOTBALL

The Jacksonville Jaguars pulled out a win against the Tennessee Titans on Thursday night and kept their playoff hopes alive. The Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts are tied for the lead in the AFC South but Indy will be without QB Andrew Luck for a few games and the Houston Texans will be without their starting QB this weekend as well so the division is up for grabs. Jaguars 19, Titans 13.

Will Smith 2Speaking of the Texans, QB Brian Hoyer will be on the sidelines this weekend against the New York Jets due to a concussion sustained on Monday night that caused memory loss. ESPN made clear it will air ads for the upcoming movie, “Concussion” starring Will Smith. Apparently the film portrays the NFL in a negative light so its interesting that the ads will be airing during game day.

BASKETBALL

It looked like the Golden State Warriors were finally going to lose when they were down by 23 points in the second quarter against the Los Angeles Clippers. But Steph Curry and the Warriors don’t give up and with Curry posting 13 of his 40 points in the 4th quarter, Golden State pulled out their 13th straight win. They are now just 2 games away from tying the best start in league history.

Arrieta & Keuchel Win Cy Young, Johnny Football Starts For Browns

BASEBALL

Jake Arrieta 2The Cy Young Award went to two heavily bearded facial hair pitchers. The Chicago Cubs Jake Arrieta won the National League Cy Young Award and the Houston Astros Dallas Keuchel won the award for the American League.  The award is giving yearly to the best pitchers in the National League and American League in baseball.

Arrieta went on a late season tear that propelled his Cubs to the playoffs and Keuchel led the Astros to the playoffs for the first time since 2005. Both winners overcame difficult starts in the League but came to dominate due to hard work and perseverance. Congrats.

FOOTBALL

Johnny Manziel, aka Johnny Football, has taken over as the starting QB for the Cleveland Browns over injured Josh McCown. The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner had a rough start in his first season of the NFL with a stint in rehab but now seems to have matured and will be leading his team.

Tom Brady 2New Englands QB Tom Brady was named GQ’s Man of the Year. The magazine hits stands next week with an article about Brady being the the Greatest QB of all time.

Curry Scores 37 & Warriors Continue To Win, Beckham Named Sexiest Man Alive

BASKETBALL

The Golden State Warriors keep on winning and Steph Curry keeps on scoring. The Warriors recorded their 12th straight win with a 115-110 defeat over the Toronto Raptors. Curry recorded an unbelievable 37 points while Klay Thompson and Andrew Bogut added 19 and 13 respectively.  The Warriors need 3 more wins to tie the NBA record of best opening of a team (held by the Washington Capitals in 1948 and the Houston Rockets in 1993).

SOCCER

David Beckham Former soccer superstar David Beckham has been named People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive. Beckham played for four different countries in his 20 year career and won 19 titles.

Bengals Perfect Season Over, Manning Tear In Foot

FOOTBALL

d54a98ea2b254c1d2bfd38f9aca9b137 2In an ugly game on Monday night, the Cincinnati Bengals suffered their first loss of the season against the Houston Texans. After the game, Texans defensive end, J.J. Watt commented on Bengals QB Andy Dalton saying “Our goal was to come in here and make the ‘Red Rifle’ look like a Red Ryder BB gun, and I think we did that.” Dalton’s nickname is ‘Red Rifle’, and he was so offended by the comment, the seemingly benign insult has become viral on social media. Texans 10, Bengals 6.

The only two remaining undefeated teams are the Carolina Panthers and the New England Patriots.

In some upsetting news for Peyton Manning fans (me included), his season may be over. Manning was benched on Sunday after throwing four interceptions, and its now reported that he may have a more serious injury than we all suspected. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Manning has a tear in the tissue of his left foot.   Apparently this type of injury is painful and can keep him out a few weeks, but who knows if he’ll be in fighting shape for the playoffs.
