Lions Over Bears, Sanchez Redeems Self, Sherman Taunts Niners

FOOTBALL

Calvin JohnsonThe Detroit Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford threw for 390 yards and 2 TD’s in a much needed win over the Chicago Bears. Megatron (Calvin Johnson) finally looked healthy scoring those 2 TD’s and securing 11 catches and 146 yards. Even with his injury, Johnson is the fastest receiver in NFL history to get to 10,000 receiving yards. Detroit 34, Bears 17.

The Eagles’ Mark Sanchez redeemed his butt fumble and threw his way to an easy win over the Dallas Cowboys. Sanchez threw for 217 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. After the game he spoke about his infamous mistake on Thanksgiving two years ago, “It is like my favorite holiday, so that’s not cool,” Sanchez said. “It was a bummer. The game plan was to try not to do that. And we accomplished that.” Eagles 33, Cowboys 10.

Richard ShermanIn the late game Thursday, the San Francisco 49ers’ QB Colin Kaepernick had one of the worst games of his career in the prime time, highly anticipated game against the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks’ Cornerback Richard Sherman taunted and teased the Niners on route to an easy win for his team.

In reference to Sherman’s second interception, he said, ‘The second one was pretty entertaining. I was laughing the whole time. They threw it. I said, `Way to be, way to be.”’ Seahawks 19, 49ers 3.

Turkey Day Football Matchups Including The Butt Bowl Redemption Game And The Choking Gesture

FOOTBALL

What’s better on Thanksgiving than three football games and turkey! All the games today are division rivalries which means they all know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. This familiarity should lead to some great games.

First up for the day is the Detroit Lions taking on the Chicago Bears. The Lions are coming off of two defeats but they will likely come out strong today as they are hosting the Bears who are having a difficult season. 12:30 EST

Mark Sanchez

Mark Sanchez

Next up at 4:30 pm EST will be the Butt Fumble Redemption game. Let me explain for those that don’t remember. Two years ago on Thanksgiving former Jets’ QB Mark Sanchez ran into the butt of his teammate and fumbled the ball. They ended up  losing the game 49-19 and Sanchez became the “butt” of endless jokes.  Fast forward two years and now Sanchez is filling in for the injured Nick Foles as QB for the Philadelphia Eagles.  He has a chance to redeem himself in an important game against division rivals, the Dallas Cowboys.

Finally, the last game of the day, the Seattle Seahawks will be traveling to NFC rival, the San Francisco 49ers. The Niners should be fired up remembering their NFC Championship Game loss to the Seahawks last January which sent Seattle to the Super Bowl. In the game, Seattle’s Richard Sherman deflected a pass to the Niners’ Michael Crabtree which sealed the game. Afterward, Sherman famously made a choking gesture to the Niners’ QB Colin Kaepernick. As you can imagine, that didn’t go over so well and the Niners will be out for blood this time around.  8:30 pm EST

Ravens Take Lunch Money From Jets, Bills Dig Out Win Over Jets

Steve SmithThe Baltimore Ravens’ franchise could have floundered this season after the Ray Rice debacle but they figured out how to stay on top, thanks to the solid play of wide receiver Steve Smith and running back Justin Forsett. Forsett is on his 5th NFL team but seems to have settled. In the Ravens’ win Monday night, Forsett scored 2 TD’s and rushed for a career high 182 yards on 22 carries. At this rate, we could see the Ravens in the playoffs.  Steve Smith told ESPN after the game: “I look in the eyes of all my victims before I take their lunch money.” Ravens 34, Saints 27.

Speaking of playoffs, the New York Jets will not be in the post season. Their season is essentially over in their devastating loss to the Buffalo Bills Monday evening. The Bills, on the other hand, had one of their best games of the season. The win came after a devastating week in horrendous snow storm conditions. The game was rescheduled from for Monday night in Detroit. The Bills fans dug out of the snow and even traveled to Detroit for the game. Tickets to the game were free and 56,000 people showed up. Bills 38, Jets 3.

Odell Beckham’s Greatest Catch In History, T.Y. Hilton TD For Baby Girl, RGIII Tough Day, Katy Perry Headline SuperBowl

FOOTBALL

Odell Beckham JrIf you were watching the Giants/Cowboys game Sunday, you witnessed arguably the greatest catch in the history of the game. This one-handed catch by Odell Beckham Jr was truly spectacular. If you didn’t see it live, watch here! Unfortunately the Giants couldn’t get the win but Beckham certainly made a case for rookie of the year. Cowboys 31, Giants 28.

In a touching moment, Indianapolis Colts’ WR, T.Y Hilton scored a touchdown in a promise to his newborn daughter. Hilton was at his daughter’s birth Sunday morning but wanted to get to the game so he could score a TD in her honor. In the third quarter, Hilton caught a 73 yard TD from Andrew Luck. In the endzone, Hilton cradled the football like a newborn and then in interviews after the game, he teared up talking about his baby girl.

Rough day for Washington Redskins’ QB Robert Griffin III (RGIII) against the San Francisco 49ers. Pre-game reports suggested that Redskins’ coach, Jon Gruden would pull RGIII if he didn’t perform. Griffin sustained 5 sacks during the game and only completed 11 of 19 passes for 106 yards. It will be surprising seeing RGIII in the starting job next week.  The game was sloppy but the 49ers pulled off the win. 49ers 17, Redskins 13

Katy PerryIn other football news, the NFL announced Katy Perry will headline the SuperBowl February 1st in Phoenix, AZ. The NFL continues to cater to the younger generation so expect a dynamic and exciting show.

Raiders Stun Chiefs, Blount To Patriots, Bills And Jets Play, Golic’s Butt Photo

FOOTBALL

In the NFL, it was Thursday Night Football between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Oakland Raiders.  The Chiefs are red-hot right now.  They are tied for 1st place in the AFC West with Denver, and they just beat the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.  Plus, next week they have a showdown with Denver for a game that will definitely be important come playoff time.  Oakland, on the other hand, was 0-10 coming into this game, and nobody expected them to do anything spectacular.  You know what that means… TRAP GAME!!!

Yep, Kansas City definitely overlooked their meager opponent coming into the game.  They were already thinking about Denver, but Oakland takes this rivalry seriously, and there was a packed house in Oakland to root on the struggling Raiders.  The Raiders jumped out to a big lead thanks to an awesome rushing performance from LaTavius Murray.  Unfortunately, Murphy got a concussion and had to leave the game, but he instilled the “We Can Do It” attitude in the Raiders that they would use to get the win against the Chiefs.  They now have the winless monkey off of their back.  Oakland 24, Kansas City 20.

Elsewhere in the NFL, just one day after LeGarrett Blount was released by the Pittsburgh Steelers for “having a bad attitude”, his old team, the New England Patriots picked him up off waivers.  They are hoping that he won’t bring his negative energy to their organization, and that he will give them the running back depth they need headed into the playoffs.  Blount had a lot of success with the Pats last year, and they believe they know how to use him.

In a follow-up story, it looks like the Bills and the Jets WILL actually play this week.  But it won’t be on Sunday, it won’t be in Buffalo (because of the snow) and it won’t be in New York (because that wouldn’t be fair).  The game will actually be played on Monday night… in Detroit.  Detroit has an indoor stadium.

Mike GolicAnd finally, woke up to one of the funniest sights this morning….Mike Golic of Mike and Mike in the morning posing like Kim Kardashian’s magazine cover. Golic lost a bet to Greenberg when Northwestern (Greenberg’s alma mater) beat Notre Dame (Golic’s alma mater) and this was one of his punishments. For a full view (not that you want it) click here.

Bills Players Blasted With Snowstorm And No Practice, Saints’ Fan In Mardi Gras Spirit, Shanahan Could Coach Gators

FOOTBALL

e9f1a568a6c3f7dcced5f65f02c4fbfaIn the NFL, the Buffalo Bills have a bit of a predicament.  Buffalo is arguably the most harsh cold weather region in the nation.  They just got blasted with a huge snowstorm, so intense that none of the Buffalo Bills players or coaches can get out of their house and drive to the facilities for practice.  Many people, including the players, are wondering if the Bills will play this Sunday given the chance that they haven’t had an opportunity to prepare.  Currently, all signs point to “Yes, they will play”, but it seems like their opponent, the New York Jets, may have a bit of an advantage.  Then again, the Jets are pretty bad this season.

And elsewhere in the NFL, New Orleans Saints’ fan, Tony Williams, who stole headlines after he grabbed a touchdown ball thrown into the crowd away from a female Bengals fan, has said that he never expected such a backlash.  Video showed that the female Bengals fan was pleading with Williams to give her the football, which Bengals tight end Jermaine Gresham initially threw to her.  Williams intercepted the ball at the last second, and the media pounced.  But Williams had an opportunity to defend himself, saying that he just got in the Mardi Gras spirit (i.e. people try to catch things thrown from floats) and said he just wanted to the get the football for his grandchild.

In college football, an interesting candidate has emerged for the head coaching job at the University of Florida:  two-time Super Bowl champion Mike Shanahan.  Shanahan could bring a winning pedigree to the organization, but Shanahan was anything but impressive during his time with the Washington Redskins.  College football coaching is a younger man’s jobs, as the hours are truly intense, but perhaps Shanahan can make the Gators relevant again for the first time since the Urban Meyer era.

Peterson Suspended By NFL, Dwight Howard Abuse Charges Resurface, New College Football Rankings

FOOTBALL

Adrian Peterson NFL suspended Adrian Peterson without pay for the rest of the 2014 season. The decision is creating some controversy as some believe that the NFL made the wrong decision regarding the Ray Rice domestic abuse issue so now they are coming down hard on Peterson. Peterson pleaded no contest back on November 4th to misdemeanor reckless assault on his 4-year-old son. The NFL Players Association is appealing the ruling but the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s letter stated:

“You have shown no meaningful remorse for your conduct. When indicted, you acknowledged what you did but said that you would not ‘eliminate whooping my kids’ and defended your conduct in numerous published text messages to the child’s mother. You also said that you felt ‘very confident with my actions because I know my intent.’

“These comments raise the serious concern that you do not fully appreciate the seriousness of your conduct, or even worse, that you may feel free to engage in similar conduct in the future.”

BASKETBALL

Dwight HowardIn another potential child abuse case, the NBA is now investigating Houston Rockets’ Center Dwight Howard. The allegations stem from an incident this summer but is now resurfacing. Dwight’s lawyer responded with the following:

“It is troubling to see a mother use her son as a pawn against his father, which is what is happening in this case,” the statement reads. “Dwight Howard will continue to act in the best interest of his children and do whatever is necessary to protect their welfare and best interests.”

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

The new edition of the College Football Playoff Rankings came out and Alabama now sits at #1 and Mississippi dropped to # 4. Oregon at # 2 and Florida State at # 3 round out the semifinal slots for the time being. It will be an exciting remainder of the season.

Seahawks’ Lynch Chemistry Not Right, Muschamp Resigns from Univ Florida, Jose Canseco Auctioning Finger

FOOTBALL

Marshawn LynchIn the NFL, the Seattle Seahawks are not playing badly this season, but they are struggling to perform as well as they did in last year’s epic Super Bowl season.  They are still in contention for the playoffs, but something seems to be off with their chemistry.  Some of it has to do with their running back Marshawn Lynch.  Lynch plays very hard, but has definitely had some attitude problems with the Seahawks’ brass.  Head coach Pete Carroll said he believes this is on account of the contract discussions from the off-season.  They didn’t go as Lynch would have liked, but Carroll said he is working with Lynch to resolve issues.  After all, this team wants to get back in late-season form and make a playoff push.

In college football, the decision makers at the University of Florida have seen all they need to from head coach Will Muschamp.  Muschamp took over the program after superstar head coach Urban Meyer stepped down, and the program hasn’t been the same since.  The Gators were almost always in the Top 10 if not the Top 5 discussions, but they have been lackluster at best since the end of the Urban Meyer/Tim Tebow era.  Muschamp resigned as head coach (meaning he was fired), and now Florida is searching for a very offensive minded coach.

BASEBALL

Jose Canseco Finally, in some very strange news, former baseball all-star Jose Canseco has had a very interesting month.  He had a horrific accident in which he shot off his finger during a gun cleaning incident.  The doctors were able to reattach the finger, but when he was playing in a poker tournament, it literally fell off.   Well, that gave Canseco an idea.  He said he was thinking about auctioning off his finger on eBay.  Baseball memorabilia enthusiasts actually might be willing to pay for something like that — the finger of one of the “Bash Brothers”… no matter how stupid this might be.

Alabama Now Favorite For National Championship, Rams Run Over Broncos, Patriots Team To Beat

FOOTBALL

6c6b8ad40c3098e3767882d797c641bcIn college football, everyone was looking forward to the big showdown between #1 Mississippi State and #5 Alabama.  This game was in ‘Bama, so if Miss St. really wanted to prove they were #1, this is a game they needed to win.  Plus, with the season drawing to a close, a loss could likely mean that they are out of the college playoffs.  In college football, It’s never good to lose late in the season.  How did it play out?  ‘Bama held their ground and were able to put a lock on the Bulldogs’ defense.  The Bulldogs had a small rally late in the game, but this game belonged to the Crimson Tide.  Alabama is now one of the favorites to win the National Championship.  Alabama 25, Mississippi State 20.

In the NFL, Denver has been shaky lately when playing good teams.  They got a real test two weeks ago when they played the Patriots and lost.  So how would they fare on the road against a sneaky good St. Louis Rams defense?  The answer:  Not very well.  The Rams D caused Peyton Manning to throw multiple picks (rare for him), and the Rams’ offense was able to run on the Broncos D.  Sure, Peyton Manning lost Julius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders to injury, but that’s not really an excuse with all the weapons he has.  The Rams earned this win, and the Broncos are starting to look very vulnerable.  St. Louis 22, Denver 7.

Andrew LuckAnd now, it looks like the team to beat in the AFC is the New England Patriots.  Tom Brady and his pack are absolutely crushing teams, scoring almost at will.  They took on another offensive powerhouse in Andrew Luck and the Colts, but the Colts were simply no match for Bill Belichick and his instant offense machine.  The Pats just kept running up the score. It’s hard to imagine which defense in the AFC can stop these guys.  They might even get home field advantage before season’s end.  Remember when everyone said their dynasty was over after they lost in September on Monday Night Football to Kansas City? Guess we need to forget about that!  New England 42, Indianapolis 20.

Dolphins Grab Win In TNF, Mike Trout Asset For Angels, Stanton Superstar For Struggling Marlins

FOOTBALL

In the NFL, it was Thursday Night Football between the Buffalo Bills and the Miami Dolphins.  This was a key divisional match-up for both teams looking to grab a playoff birth.  The game was slow to start, but soon enough, the Dolphins offense kicked into high gear.  Unfortunately for the Bills, they just couldn’t get anything going on offense, and were held to 3 field goals.  Miami grabbed the win, and pulled into second place in the AFC East behind the Patriots.  Miami 22, Buffalo 9.

BASEBALL

Mike TroutThe MVP awards are coming out, and the Angels Mike Trout became the youngest player in major league baseball to get a unanimous vote.  He is only 23, and it it seems clear that the Angels have a young Hall of Famer on their hands that could be a major asset for them for at least the next 10 – 12 years.

Elsewhere in baseball, the Miami Marlins are a struggling franchise.  They went through a major re-branding effort a few years ago trying to rejuvenate baseball in South Florida.  Unfortunately, that didn’t work all that well. They have terrible attendance and seem to be losing money every year.  Fortunately, they have an up-and-coming superstar on their roster in Giancarlo Stanton.  They need the franchise to have a face, and according to sources, they are ready to make Stanton that face for a deal worth roughly $300million.  That’s a huge amount of money, but they are looking to do whatever it takes to be successful.
