Braxton Miller Might Transfer To Florida State, Manziel In Trouble Again, Suh Suspension Overturned

FOOTBALL

Northwestern v Ohio StatePotentially big news out of the college football world. There is speculation that Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller might transfer to Florida State as their starting QB next year. J.T. Barrett, who is the Ohio State starter but currently sidelined due to injury, is expected to fully recover and take over the role next fall. Miller doen’t want to play back up so may jump ship. Miller has already graduated from Ohio State so could easily transfer and start playing for Florida State immediately. Nothing has been officially decided yet, but this could be interesting.

In the NFL, the Cleveland Browns’ rookie quarterback, Johnny Manziel is in trouble with the team (and fans) again. Manziel has a torn hamstring and is required to show up at the team facilities for treatment. When he did not appear Saturday morning, team security went to his house and found that he had slept in. Reports said he threw a party the night before but Manziel denied that and insisted he only had three friends visiting from Texas. At least Manziel is taking responsibility. While speaking to reporters, he said,  “It’s about actions, it’s about being accountable instead of looking like a jackass.”

As reported on Tuesday, the Detroit Lions Ndamukong Suh’s suspension will n0w be overturned and he will play on Sunday in the Lions’ playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys. Suh will pay a $70,000 fine.

Harbaugh To Michigan, Suh Suspended For Stepping On Rodgers’ Leg

FOOTBALL

Andrew LuckIt’s official. Former San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh is heading back to his alma mater and will coach at the University of Michigan. It is reported that he will receive a 6 year contract worth at least 48 million dollars.

Ndamukong Suh, defensive tackle for the Detroit Lions will be suspended for the wildcard game against the Dallas Cowboys for stepping on Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers leg. Suh “unnecessarily stepped on [the] opponent’s unprotected leg as he lay on the ground unable to protect himself,” according to a statement released by the NFL. Suh will appeal the suspension. If he is out, this will be a major hole in the Lions defense.

49ers’ Harbaugh Out, Jets’ Rex Ryan May Be History Too

FOOTBALL

Jim Harbaugh.JPGBig coaching changes after the last weekend of the regular season. Jim Harbaugh and the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to part ways. Had aught has been with the Niners for four seasons but has recently had some public clashes with management which has made fans speculate on his departure. Now the question is where will he go? The University of Michigan (his alma mater) desperately wants him. We should know soon if it’s a done deal.

According to League sources, the New York Jets’ owner Woody Johnson is prepared to fire the Jets’ General Manager John Idzik and Coach Rex Ryan.  If Ryan is finally fired (according to many fans, this has been a long time coming), at least he went out on a winning note by beating the Miami Dolphins Sunday 37-24.

Cheers For Lebron On Christmas Day Return To Miami, Aaron Rodgers Gives O-line TV’s

BASKETBALL

Lebron JamesThe Miami Heat fans and teammates gave former Heat Lebron James a cheerful welcome home in their  Christmas Day game against Lebron’s new team, the Cleveland Cavaliers. There was a big question prior to the game whether the fans would cheer or boo Lebron for leaving them as a free agent to go to the Cavs. Lebron helped the Heat to back to back titles and four Finals appearances. The fans still seem to appreciate him but unfortunately for Lebron and the Cavs they couldn’t pull out the win and the Heat defeated the Cavs 101-91.

FOOTBALL

Aaron RodgersA good quarterback recognizes the importance of his offensive line. This was apparent in Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ Christmas gift to his guys. Each offensive lineman received a 55″ Samsung television. His backup QB’s also received the TV. Let’s see how much harder these guys work for Rodgers on Sunday against the Detroit Lions.

Broncos Lose To Bengals, Manziel Out For Season, Pistons Waive Smith

FOOTBALL

In the NFL, it was Monday Night Football between the Denver Broncos and the Cincinnati Bengals.  The Broncos needed a win if they wanted to have a shot at home field advantage.  The Bengals needed a win if they wanted to keep their playoff hopes alive.  Plus, for what it’s worth, it was the week for fantasy football championships in most leagues, and there were many star players involved (e.g Peyton Manning,Demaryius Thomas, Julius Thomas, AJ Green, and Jeremy Hill).  The Bengals started off hot, and the Broncos didn’t look so great.  But in the second half, the Broncos came storming back.  It looked like they were going to take the game, but the Bengals gave it one last effort and got the important win.  The Broncos have to really assess things, because they do not seem Super Bowl perfect right now.  Cincinnati 37, Denver 28.

Johnny ManzielElsewhere, it looks like the Johnny Manziel rookie era in the NFL came and went.  Against the Panthers, Manziel suffered an injury, and now it is being reported that Manziel is out for the season.  The Browns were hoping to use these last few games as an audition for Johnny Manziel’s pro football career, and now they won’t get another chance to look at him.  The Browns now need to decide this off season whether they want to keep Manziel and give him a shot as their franchise QB, even though he has not looked good as a pro, or if they want to take a chance on another hot rookie or free agent.  Perhaps Jay Cutler will be available.

BASKETBALL

And in the NBA, the Detroit Pistons have decided to waive veteran forward Josh Smith.  They said that the team has not performed to their expectations throughout the first third of the season, and now they are shifting direction to focus on the younger players.  Smith is not part of that plan, even though they still owe him $26 million.  If you read between the lines, Smith is driving them crazy and they don’t want him around.  If he clears waivers in the next 48 hours, he will be very in demand as an important piece to a championship puzzle.

Atlanta And Carolina Continue NFC South Battle, Jets Not Enough Agst Pats, Seahawks D Serious Threat

FOOTBALL

In the NFL, the battle for first place in the NFC South is a close one, and it’s crazy that one of these not so great teams will get to host a first round playoff game.  The New Orleans Saints took on the Atlanta Falcons in New Orleans, and the Saints were looking to keep their hopes alive.  But, the Falcons came in full steam ahead and trounced the Saints, effectively eliminating them from the playoffs.  Then, over in Carolina, the Carolina Panthers eeked by a struggling Cleveland Browns team.  This now sets up a “playoff” game next week when the Falcons take on the Panthers for the right to host a first round actual playoff game.  Atlanta 30, New Orleans 14.  Carolina 17, Cleveland 13.

Tom BradyIn New York, the Jets have had a terrible season, one that will likely result in the firing of their head coach Rex Ryan.  So you knew that they would treat this home game against their rival, the New England Patriots, like the Super Bowl.  The Jets looked pretty decent in the first half, completely containing Tom Brady, and even taking the lead at one point.  But, the Patriots did just enough in the second half to get the job done, and hang on to their home field advantage position for now.  New England 17, NY Jets 16.

Finally, in Arizona, the Seattle Seahawks came to town looking for the opportunity to win the NFC West division.  Arizona, on the other hand, were also trying to win their division, and potentially get home field advantage for the playoffs.  Plus, the Super Bowl is in Arizona this year, so they would be the first team to host and play in a Super Bowl.  Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Marshawn Lynch and the Seattle Seahawks defense are just too strong.  It’s hard for anybody to do much against the Seattle D now, because they are finally back to full health.  They have all their top guys back, and this is one incredibly talented unit.  They are a serious Super Bowl threat.  Seattle 35, Arizona 6.

Rajon Rondo Rumors True, Mumps In Hockey, Harbaugh Mulls Move To Michigan Or Raiders

BASKETBALL

Rajon RondoThe rumors of the Boston Celtics trade of Rajon Rondo to the Dallas Mavericks appear to be true.  The deal would bring Brandon Wright, Jameer Nelson, serviceable bench player Jae Crowder and a future 1st and 2nd round pick to the Celtics.  This essentially gives the Celtics some good money bargains and some draft picks, while the Mavericks would instantly become a serious contender.  This is an exciting year in the NBA, and this trade only makes it better.

HOCKEY

There is a weird fluke mumps epidemic right now.  Apparently, a lot of the players that are suffering from the mumps stayed at a specific DoubleTree hotel.  It even sidelined arguably the face of hockey Sidney Crosby.  But on Thursday, Crosby returned from his illness to take on the Avalanche.  And with Pittsburgh Penguins having a lackluster season (i.e. if the playoffs started today, they wouldn’t make it), the Penguins desperately needed him back.

FOOTBALL

Jim HarbaughFinally, in college football, serious rumors are surrounding current 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh and the University of Michigan.  Apparently, Michigan has offered Harbaugh $8million per year to run their program.  And considering that the 49ers brass may not want Harbaugh back next year, especially after the team fell apart this season, he may have to explore this offer.  Then again, Harbaugh has already won at the collegiate level, and he wants to prove he can win the big one in the pros.  It is also rumored that the Oakland Raiders are very interested in Harbaugh, and even might consider a move back to LA.  That is also an intriguing offer that Harbaugh may have to mull.  This could get very interesting.

Jay Cutler Benched, Grizzles In Groove, Rajon Rono Trade Rumors

FOOTBALL

Jay CutlerIn the NFL, the main story of the day centered around Chicago Bears’ quarterback Jay Cutler. Cutler was brought into Chicago hoping that he would be their savior. He showed flashes of excellence, flashes, that would earn him a huge contract. But it seems like the Bears story every year is that they start out hot, then completely collapse around Week 8. This year was no different, and finally the Bears brass  had enough. They have opted to bench Cutler this week in favor of back-up Jimmy Clausen. Cutler is likely on his way out of Chicago, and the Bears will go hunting for a new QB in the draft.

BASKETBALL

The Memphis Grizzlies appear to be emerging as the best team in the NBA. This is a team that has had the same nucleus for a few years now, and appear to have found an unstoppable groove. They would be tested Wednesday night by the defending champion San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs are a team that takes “nights off” (meaning they play down to their opponent), but they were ready to take on the Grizzlies. So much so that they game needed three overtimes to be decided — one of which came about because of a miracle shot by Tim Duncan. But, in the end, the Grizzlies just did more, and got the win in San Antonio. Memphis 117, San Antonio 116.

Finally, in the NBA, rumors are swirling that the Celtics and Mavericks are talking about a trade for Celtics’ star point guard Rajon Rondo. Rondo would be a huge asset for a contending team like the Mavericks, and the Celtics are still in rebuilding mode. Getting some young pieces from the Mavs or even some draft picks would be just what they need. This trade might happen, and could be just enough to help the Mavericks win the West.

Saints Jump Ahead Of Bears In MNF, Stephenson On Trading Block, Andrew Luck’s Niceness Routine

FOOTBALL

In the NFL, it was Monday Night Football between the New Orleans Saints and the Chicago Bears.  Both of these teams aren’t looking so great, but the difference is that the Saints are actually fighting for a playoff spot — and a home game at that.  So they came ready to play.  People were expecting an offensive shootout, but only the Saints were doing the shooting.  They jumped out to a 21-0 lead and never looked back.  The Bears got some garbage time points, but their team is truly ugly and uninspired.  They need to make some serious changes in the off-season.  The Saints are now tied with Carolina for the playoff spot.  New Orleans 31, Chicago 15.

BASKETBALL

In the NBA, LeBron James and Cleveland just keep on rolling.  They actually jumped out to a 21-0 lead on the Charlotte Hornets.  But while the Cavs are on fire, the Hornets are the complete opposite.  In fact, they are getting so bad, that they are even putting their big free agent signing, Lance Stephenson, on the trading block.  Apparently, he is just as much of the head case that people thought he was a year ago, and now the Hornets don’t want anything to do with him.  The problem is, not many other NBA teams do either.  He’s not good enough to merit the money or the stress.  Expect the Hornets to make some major changes.  Cleveland 97, Charlotte 88.

FOOTBALL

Andrew LuckFinally, in some humorous NFL news, Indianapolis Colts’ QB Andrew Luck is clearly a rising superstar, but he may have some tricks up his sleeve that have never been used before.  According to other players, Andrew Luck has a “Kindness” routine to confuse opposing defenses.  When a defense sacks him hard, Luck just gets up and, instead of being mad, he gives them a compliment, saying things like, “Good job, man”.  Well this gets in the defensive players head, and it may even make them try not to hit him as hard. It’s an interesting and unique strategy he’s employing, and that might be why the Colts could find themselves in the Super Bowl this year.

Mariota Wins Heisman, Bills Hurt Packers’ Destiny, Johnny Football Atrocious, Cowboys Avenge Loss

FOOTBALL

Marcus MariotaIn college football, it was time to present the Heisman Trophy.  This year, there were only 3 candidates:  Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper, Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon (who broke the all time single game rushing record before it was broken again the following week by an Oklahoma running back), and Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota (arguably the #1 pick in the NFL draft).  In the end, the award went to Mariota for leading the Ducks to the #2 seed college football playoff.  He had a great year, and NFL teams are drooling to draft him.

In the NFL, the Green Bay Packers felt like they were on a destined course for winning home field advantage in the NFL playoffs.  But to Buffalo, a team that is mathematically alive for the playoffs even though they likely won’t make it, this was a chance to show the world that they are a super tough team with a staunch defense that can beat anyone. They gave Aaron Rodgers a day he will never forget.  Interceptions, sacks, you name it.  The Bills held on for the win, and the Packers’ hopes for home field advantage took a huge hit.  Buffalo 21, Green Bay 13.

Elsewhere, everyone was looking forward to the big debut of Johnny Manziel’s first starting job in the NFL.  Expectations were high, and people were hoping to see Manziel running around out there putting on a fireworks show.  Instead, they got 4 quarters of Manziel getting sacked and throwing interceptions.  It was a true ‘Welcome To The NFL’ moment.  He was atrocious leading the Cincinnati Bengals to a shut out!  With the win, the Bengals are in good position to win a playoff birth, while the Browns’ hopes for a playoff spot may be behind them.  Cincinnati 30, Cleveland 0.

Finally, on Sunday Night, the Cowboys were looking to avenge their loss at home to the Eagles on Thanksgiving Day.  They got out to a hot start, reeling off 3 straight touchdowns, but then the Eagles came flying back, and even took the lead.  Thankfully for the Cowboys, the Eagles still were led by Mark Sanchez, who made a number of costly mistakes to put the Cowboys in multiple good scoring positions to win the game.  They cruised to a victory in the 4th quarter, but in the tough NFC, their hopes of making the playoffs are still up in the air.  They have a difficult schedule the rest of the way, and will need to play perfectly if they want to ensure their post-season birth.  Dallas 38, Philadelphia 27.
