Jags Pick Trevor At #1 And Signing Bonus In Cryptocurrencies, Jets And Niners Also Take QB’s, Alabama Ties Record, Aaron Rodgers Wants Out, Friends From Brown At Kentucky Derby

FOOTBALL

To no one’s surprise, the Jacksonville Jaguars took quarterback Trevor Lawrence with the number one pick in the NFL draft. What many may not know is Lawrence is planning on using his signing bonus ($22,630,055) to invest in cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin, ether, and dogecoin.

In other draft news, the New York Jets shocked many by taking quarterback Zach Wilson, while the San Francisco 49ers also grabbed a quarterback with the #3 pick in Trey Lance. In a big surprise, quarterback Mac Jones dropped from the top five, then was grabbed by the New England Patriots at #15 to back up Cam Newton (who signed a one-year deal this offseason).  For a full recap of the 1st round of the draft, click here.

In an impressive stat for Alabama, the team tied a record set by Miami in 2004 by having six first-round picks.

The big surprise of the draft was when all-star quarterback Aaron Rodgers told the Green Bay Packers he doesn’t want to return to the team. The Packers stated they won’t trade him, but the announcement is causing a major stir.

HORSE RACING

The 147th running of the Kentucky Derby (the first leg of the Triple Crown) will take place on Saturday, May 1st at 6:57 pm ET. In the field of 20 horses, Essential Quality goes off at 2-1 odds. The owners of Hot Rod Charlie, another favorite, have a great story. A group of five college friends from Brown wanted to find a hobby after graduation as a way to keep in touch. They randomly decided to buy a horse, and crazily enough their horse is running in one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world. For the full story, click here.

Gronkowski In Guinness Book Of Records, Curry’s Record Setting Month

FOOTBALL

Rob Gronkowski set another record and now resides in the Guinness Book of World Records. And, in pure Gronk fashion, did it with flair. While serving as the honorary coach of a spring football game at his alma mater, the University of Arizona, Gronk caught a football dropped from a helicopter hovering at 600 feet in the air. Check this out!

BASKETBALL

Speaking of records, Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry continues to amaze. Against the Sacramento Kings on Sunday night, Curry hit seven 3-pointers setting a new NBA record for most 3’s (85) in a calendar month. The previous record of 82 was held by the Brooklyn Nets’ James Harden (while he was a member of the Houston Rockets).

Alex Smith Retiring, Super League Shaking Up Soccer, Curry Drops 49 Points

FOOTBALL

Quarterback Alex Smith announced he’s retiring. After a life-threatening injury and a miraculous recovery, The former #1 overall draft pick returned to the field last season to play for the Washington Team where he led them to a 5-1 record as its starter.

SOCCER

A group of 12 Elite European soccer clubs shook up the sports world when they announced the creation of a Super League. The new League will start with six clubs from England’s Premier League and six from Spain and Italy, with the ultimate goal of 15 permanent teams. UEFA (European soccer’s governing body) has expressed outrage at the idea and released a statement saying it’s a “cynical project’ that they intend to shut down.” The Super League intends to distribute a significantly higher sum (than they would get from winning the Champions League) to the players for just participating in this League.

BASKETBALL

Steph Curry continues to rack in the points. In a 107-96 win over his brother Seth and the Philadelphia 76ers, Curry scored 49 points, making him “the first player in NBA history age 33 or older to score 30 plus points in 11 straight games.”

Hideki Matsuyama Wins Masters, Enes Kanter Record 30 Rebounds, A-Rod/Lore To Buy Timberwolves

GOLF

Hideki Matsuyama won the coveted Masters becoming the first Japanese male golfer to win a major. In addition to donning the coveted Green Jacket, the win is estimated to be worth $600 million to the intensely private 29-year-old.

BASKETBALL

The Portland Trailblazers Enes Kanter had the crowd going wild on Saturday night when he pulled in 24 points and a franchise-record 30 rebounds in a win over the Detroit Pistons. Kanter became only the fourth player in the NBA with 30 rebounds in a game joining Dwight Howard, Andrew Bynum, and Kevin Love. After the game, Kanter said, “I was so happy when I looked at the bench and everybody was up, everybody was cheering, everybody was smiling, everybody was supporting their teammates. That’s what we’re all about. That’s what Blazers basketball is all about, just supporting each other.”

Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore (an e-commerce titan) signed a letter of intent to buy the Minnesota Timberwolves and the WNBA’s Lynx for an estimated $1.5 billion. If the sale goes through, Lore and Rodriguez would take over in two years.
