Sixers Let Harden Go, Germán Throws MLB’s 24th Perfect Game, Biles Is Back, NFL Suspends 4

BASKETBALL

The Philadelphia 76ers let James Harden go. According to the report, “The 76ers made it clear throughout the process that the franchise did not see a long-term future with Harden.” The Clippers are his preferred destination, but the Knicks and the Heat are also possibilities.

BASEBALL

New York Yankees pitcher Domingo Germán threw Major League Baseball’s 24th perfect game and its first since 2012.

GYMNASTICS

Simone Biles announced she will return to competition in August. Biles hasn’t competed since the Tokyo Olympics where she announced she was taking a break in order to focus on her mental health. Biles dominated gymnastics for almost 10 years and is tied with Shannon Miller for the most medals won by an American female.

FOOTBALL

The NFL suspended four players for violating the league’s gambling policy. The two Colts players, Rashod Berry and Demetrius Taylor, were subsequently suspended by the team.

Wembanyama Taken #1 & Looking Forward To Breakfast Tacos, Top 5 Includes Twins, Chris Paul To Warriors, Penny Hardaway Suspended

BASKETBALL

To no one’s surprise, the San Antonio Spurs chose Victor Wembanyama with the #1 pick in the NBA draft. When asked at the end of the night what he’s looking forward to the most, the 7′ 5″ French player said”Breakfast tacos…I’ve heard a lot about breakfast tacos.”

The Charlotte Hornets took Alabama freshman Brandon Miller with the #2 pick and Scoot Henderson of the G League Ignite at #3 by the Portland Trail Blazers, Amen Thompson at #4 to the Rockets, and twin brother Ausar Thompson to the Pistons at #5. It’s the first time twins were taken in the top five of the same NBA draft.

In other NBA news, just days after he was traded to the Washington Wizards, Chris Paul is now heading to the Golden State Warriors for Jordan Poole and two future picks. The Wizards also made news by trading Kristaps Porzingis to the Celtics as part of a three-way deal that sends Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies.

In college basketball news, Memphis men’s head coach Penny Hardaway was suspended for the first three games of the 2023-24 season due to recruiting violations.

Lionel Messi $2600 Tickets, Harris/Blitzer Buying Minority Stake In Joe Gibbs Racing, Wembanyama’s First Pitch

Fans are excited to see Lionel Messi’s Major League Soccer debut next month for Inter Miami and willing to pay an average of $2,600 for a ticket (per SeatGeek).

NASCAR

According to reports, Josh Harris and David Blitzer, owners of Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment (HBSE), are making an investment in Joe Gibbs Racing. HBSE will be buying a minority stake in the NASCAR conglomerate.

BASKETBALL

The NBA draft is Thursday night, and the San Antonio Spurs’ #1 pick will undoubtedly be 7’4″ Victor Wembanyama. The French basketball player threw out the first pitch at the Yankees game Tuesday night, but it wasn’t pretty.

Wyndham Clark Wins U.S. Open, Ja Morant Ninth-Longest Suspension, Jordan Selling Majority Stake In Hornets For $3Bill, Suns Sign Bradley Beal

GOLF

Wyndham Clark won his first major PGA Tour title at the U.S. Open this week.  The 29-year-old had previously never finished better than 75th in any major. Rory McIlroy finished second.

BASKETBALL

The Memphis Grizzlies star player, Ja Morant, has been suspended 25 games (which is basically 1/3 of the NBA season) for flashing a gun on social media (his second time doing so). The suspension is tied for the ninth-longest ban on a player in NBA history.

NBA legend Michael Jordan is selling his majority stake in the Charlotte Hornets for $3 billion to a group led by Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall. Jordan bought his majority share in the team in 2010 for $275 million. Jordan will still have a minority stake in the franchise.

The Phoenix Suns acquired Bradley Beal from the Washington Wizards. Beal will join the all-star lineup of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Deandre Ayton.

Golden Knights Win Stanley Cup! Athletic Fans Not Happy About Impending Move To Vegas

HOCKEY

The Vegas Golden Knights demolished the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night in Game 5 to win the Stanley Cup! By accomplishing this feat in just their sixth season as a franchise, the Knights  become the fastest team to win an NHL title in history.

BASEBALL

Coinciding with the Nevada Senate voting to approve a $380 million Las Vegas ballpark for the Athletics, fans showed up at the Oakland Coliseum en mass to protest the team’s ownership and impending move to Vegas. Once the funding is complete for the new stadium, the Athletics will need to secure a vote of approval from the other 29 MLB owners for the move, which is expected to be unanimous.

Congrats To Denver For First NBA Title In Franchise History, Jokić Wins Finals MVP

BASKETBALL

The Denver Nuggets beat the Miami Heat in Game 5 to win their first NBA title in franchise history. To no one’s surprise, Nikola Jokić won the NBA Finals MVP and became the first player in history to lead the league in points  (600), rebounds (269), and assists (190) in a single season. Jokić (who has no social media accounts) had some key words of wisdom in his postgame interview, “If you want to be a success, you need a couple years. You need to be bad, then you need to be good. Then when you’re good you need to fail. And then when you fail, you’re going to figure it out.”

Djokovic Most Grand Slams In History, Antonucci First Female Trainer To Win A Triple Crown Race, Nuggets/Knights Up 3-1

TENNIS

Novak Djokovic beat Casper Ruud in the French Open. With the win, the 36-year-old now has recorded his 23rd men’s Grand Slam singles title, passing Rafael Nadal for the most Grand Slam titles in history.

HORSE RACING

Arcangelo won the Belmont Stakes race on Saturday night making Jena Antonucci the first female trainer to win one of the famous Triple Crown races. The historical feat comes 30 years after Julie Krone became the first female jockey to win a Triple Crown race.

BASKETBALL

The Denver Nuggets have a commanding 3-1 series lead over the Miami Heat with Game 5 Monday night.

HOCKEY

The Vegas Golden Knights are up 3-1 against the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Finals with Game 5 Tuesday night.

Panthers Win Game 3 In OT, Belmont Stakes Happening If Air Quality Good, Nuggets At Miami In Game 4

HOCKEY

The Florida Panthers rallied back in a spectacular way by tying game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Vegas Golden Knights with just 2:13 seconds remaining.  The Panthers prevailed in overtime, and the series is now a more competitive 2-1. The win marks the Panthers first-ever Stanley Cup game win.

HORSE RACING

The Belmont Stakes (the third leg of the Triple Crown) is scheduled to take place on Saturday, but racing was canceled on Thursday due to the air quality.

BASKETBALL

The NBA Finals continue on Friday night with the Denver Nuggets up 2-1 against the Miami Heat.

Lionel Messi Heading to Miami, Jokić And Murray Make NBA History

SOCCER

Lionel Messi is heading to Miami. One of the greatest soccer superstars in history plans to sign with Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami. He reportedly turned down offers from Barcelona (where he spent most of his career) and a team in Saudi Arabia.

BASKETBALL

History was made Wednesday night in Game 3 of the NBA Finals when Denver’s Nikola Jokić and Jamal Murray each recorded 30-point triple-doubles in Denver’s 109-94 win over the Miami Heat. Jokić also recorded another historical milestone by recording 32 points, 21 rebounds, and 10 assists (the first 30-20-10 game in NBA Finals history). Denver has a 2-1 lead with Game 4 in Miami on Friday. Fun fact- when a Finals has been tied at 1-1, the winner of Game 3 has historically won the series 80% of the time.

PGA & LIV Merge, Churchill Downs Suspends Racing, DeGrom Out

GOLF

After two years of bitter fighting and lots of drama, the PGA Tour and LIV Golf (the group backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund) will merge. The combined forces will create “a new, collectively owned, for-profit entity.” Many big-name stars, such as Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka, left the PGA for a much larger paycheck from LIV (and were vilified by other golfers and fans), but now that the leagues have merged, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

HORSE RACING

Churchill Downs Inc announced that racing will be suspended from June 7th-July 3rd to conduct a review of the track after 12 horses died in the past month.

BASEBALL

Jacob deGrom will undergo Tommy John surgery and isn’t expected to return until the middle of next season. DeGrom signed a five-year, $185 million deal this offseason with the Texas Rangers.
