Bengals/Rams In Super Bowl LVI, Brady May Retire, Nadal’s Historic Win

FOOTBALL

After one of the most entertaining seasons of NFL football, the Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Rams will face off in Super Bowl LVI.

The Bengals were down 21-3 in the second quarter but thanks to quarterback Joe Burrow (who is only in his second season) the team clawed their way back to an overtime win over the Kansas City Chiefs. This will be the Bengal’s first Super Bowl appearance since 1989.  Bengals 27, Chiefs 24

The Los Angeles Rams also overcame a second-half deficit to beat the San Francisco 49ers 20-17.

The Rams will face the Bengals on February 13th at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA for the Championship.

In other football news, we could be witnessing the end of an era with the announcement Tom Brady may be retiring from football after 22 seasons and seven Super Bowl titles. The GOAT hasn’t confirmed his retirement yet and could be waiting to make the announcement in the spring during the final episode of his documentary series “Man in the Arena”.

TENNIS

Rafael Nadal beat Daniil Medvedev at the Australian Open to grab his 21st Grand Slam title. He now holds the record for most men’s major championships, edging out Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic who both hold 20 wins.

Ortiz In Hall Of Fame, Bonds/Clemens Don’t Make Cut, Payton Leaving Saints, Chiefs Donate To Buffalo Hospital Commemorating 13 Seconds

BASEBALL

David Ortiz (Big Papi) was the only player (out of 30) elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame this year. Even though Ortiz tested positive for steroids in 2003, he got 77.9% of the vote (above the 75% threshold for induction). Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens did not get the same leeway and were denied Cooperstown for their 10th and last opportunity.

FOOTBALL

Sean Payton announced he is leaving as head coach of the New Orleans Saints saying he’ll consider returning to coaching in the future or possibly taking a role as a television a analyst.

Kansas City Chiefs fans have been making $13 donations to the John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital of Buffalo to commemorate the 13 seconds Chiefs’ QB Patrick Mahomes took to tie the divisional playoff game against the Bills on Sunday. The Chiefs went on to win in overtime. Even though it’s a dig at the Bills, the hospital is thrilled to have received more than $80,000.

Most Exciting Weekend Of Divisional Games: Bengals, Niners, Rams, Chiefs Move On

FOOTBALL

The Weekend Playoff Games could not have been more exciting and dramatic. It was the first time in NFL history all four divisional games ended in walk-offs.

Cincinnati kicked us off with a big win over the top-seeded Tennessee Titans and will head to their first AFC Championship Game since 1988. With time expiring, Rookie Evan McPherson kicked a 52-yard field goal in the 19-16 win.

The San Francisco 49ers also pulled out a last second field goal by Robbie Gould to beat the Green Bay Packers and are headed the the NFC Championship Game. With the 13-10 win, the Niners will head to their 17th conference title game, which no other team has done since the merger in 1970.

In Sunday’s matchups, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fell behind 27-3 and the game appeared over. But then with only 42 seconds left, the Bucs tied the game. Unfortunately for Tampa though, that was enough time for Rams’ QB Matthew Stafford to march the team down the field for a game ending field goal. Rams 30-Bucs 27

The night ended with one of the most exciting games in NFL history. The offensive battle between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills was a nail biter until the very end. Chiefs’ QB Patrick Mahomes put up 378 yards, 3 TD’s and one rushing TD, while Bills’ QB Josh Allen posted 329 yards and 4 TD’s. Thanks to a rule in overtime where the game ends if the the team receiving the ball first scores a touchdown, the Chiefs edged out the Bills 42-36. Check out these highlights.

Lakers Need Wins, Embiid’s Historic 50, Burner Phones At Olympics, Bucs Coach Seen Enough Dumb

BASKETBALL

According to reports, Lakers coach Frank Vogel might be out of a job soon if the team doesn’t start performing better.

Philadelphia 76ers Joel Embiid scored 50 points Wednesday night in a win over the Orlando Magic securing his place in history (along with Golden State Warriors Klay Thompson) as the only NBA players to score 50 or more points in fewer than 28 minutes.

OLYMPICS

During the Beijing Winter Olympics, all athletes, audience members, and media are required to download the MY2022 app for Covid monitoring, news, and other features. Many are concerned with potential security breaches in the app and have been told to bring burner phones and create new email accounts while they are in China.

FOOTBALL

Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians will try and appeal a fine of $50,000 for slapping safety Andrew Adams helmet in the team’s win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. According to Arians, he was trying to prevent Adams from committing a penalty and that he’s “seen enough dumb”.

Cowboys Embarrassing Loss To Niners, Chiefs Destroy Steelers In Roethlisberger’s Last Game, LeBron Apologizes, Warriors Minority Owner Insensitive To Uyghurs

FOOTBALL

Wild card weekend is over and the divisional rounds of the Playoffs are set.

Two memorable games stood out this weekend. The Dallas Cowboys lost to the SF 49ers in a sloppy game where the only thing anyone will remember is the embarrassing last play. Cowboys QB Dak Prescott was driving the ball well into Niners territory, but with no timeouts left, he ran the ball up the middle then tried to spike the ball to stop the clock. The only issue is the umpire needed to touch the ball before the play could begin, and by the time that happened, the clock had expired and the Niners won 23-17. Check it out.

In another memorable game over the weekend, the Kansas City Chiefs destroyed the Pittsburgh Steelers 42-21 thanks to five Patrick Mahomes touchdown passes. For the sixth touchdown, tight end Travis Kelce threw for the score and became the first player in the NFL postseason to throw a touchdown, catch a touchdown, and bank 100 plus receiving yards. This was also most likely Steelers’ QB Ben Roethlisberger’s final game of his career.

Here are the Divisional Round matchups:

Saturday: Bengals and Titans, 49ers at Packers

Sunday: Rams at Buccaneers, Bills at Chiefs

BASKETBALL

LeBron James took to Twitter over the weekend to apologize for the team’s poor play. He stated, “Laker Nation I apologize and I promise we’ll be better.” LeBron has been playing well averaging 28.9 points per game, but the Lakers haven’t stepped up. We’ll see if this motivates the rest of the team to play better.

In other NBA news, the minority owner of the Golden State Warriors, Chamath Palihapitiya, is receiving backlash for his insensitive comments about China’s treatment of the Uyghurs. He said, “nobody cares about what’s happening” to the Uyghurs. The Warriors are trying to distance themselves from him stating he’s only a “limited investor.”

Giants, Texans Fire Coaches, Lay’s NFL Chips, Djokovic’s Visa Revoked Again

FOOTBALL

The coaching carousel continues. The NY Giants fired their head coach Joe Judge after two disappointing seasons. The team went 10-23 under Judge and scored the fewest points in the NFL. The team’s general manager, Dave Gettlemen, also announced his retirement this week. And, after only one season, the Houston Texans fired David Culley.

In other NFL news, a number of NFL teams partnered with Lay’s potato chips. Lay’s took soil from the grounds where NFL teams play and designated areas for their farmers to grow potatoes for each separate team. This clip explains it all.

TENNIS

The Djokovic saga continues. The #1 player in the world Novak Djokovic is in Australia to play in the Open and set a record for wins, but just days before the tournament is set to begin, he had his visa revoked again…for the second time.  The Australian immigration minister overruled the judges on the grounds of “health and good order.”

Georgia Wins National Championship, Eli Manning Becomes Partner In Private Equity Firm

FOOTBALL

#3 Georgia defeated #1 Alabama to win the College Football National Championship. The win gives the Bulldogs its first national title since 1980. The game started slowly with both teams trading field goals in the first half, but then Georgia emerged tough in the 3rd quarter and dominated the 4th quarter thanks to walk-on quarterback Stetson Bennett. According to CBS’s Barrett Sallee, Stetson’s “perfect fourth quarter was the ideal conclusion to one of the most remarkable seasons in college football history. It was a four-month ride into college football history for a player who will never have to buy a drink in Athens for the rest of his life.” Georgia 33, Alabama 18

In NFL news, former Super Bowl-winning quarterback Eli Manning has joined the private equity firm, Brand Velocity Partners.

NFL Playoff Pic Set, Raiders Win Means Chargers Out, Fired Coaches, Djokovic Will Play In Open

FOOTBALL

After a wild weekend in the NFL, the playoff picture is set. For the schedule of games, click here.

One of the most exciting matchups was the crazy close game between the Las Vegas Raiders and the Los Angeles Chargers. There was a scenario where if the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Jacksonville Jaguars both won on Sunday, then the Chargers and Raiders would BOTH make the playoffs if they ended their game in a tie. And, that almost happened, but with 2 seconds left in overtime, the Raiders kicked a field goal to win the game and head to the playoffs (without the Chargers).

Now that the regular season is over, look out for some coaching changes. The Denver Broncos got things started Sunday morning by firing Vic Fangio. The Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears, and Minnesota Vikings all followed suit and fired their head coaches (Brian Flores, Matt Nagy, and Mike Zimmer respectively).

TENNIS

The Novak Djokovic vaccination/visa cancellation drama appears to be resolved.  It’s been reported he will be allowed to stay in Australia and compete in the Australian Open. If Djokovic wins the Open, he will have broken the record for men’s Grand Slam titles.

Terrell Owens To Replace Brown, Fans Of Jets/Giants Sue Over NY Status, Irving Makes Season Debut, Djokovic Detained

FOOTBALL

On his recent podcast, Terrell Owens, the Hall of Fame wide receiver, said he believes he can replace Antonio Brown on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Since it would only be three or four games and not a full season, the 48-year old Owens believes that even after 11 years out of the League he’s still physically ready to play.

In other football news, fans of the NY Jets and NY Giants sued the NFL (as well as the Jets and Giants) for using the New York name and brand while not actually playing in New York. The two teams play at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, so the fans are suing for “false advertising, deceptive practices, and racketeering.” They are asking for financial damages and an ultimatum that the teams return to New York in 2025.

BASKETBALL

The Brooklyn Nets’ Kyrie Irving finally made his season debut Wednesday night against the Indiana Pacers. Irving isn’t allowed to play home games for the Nets because he’s refused to get vaccinated, but he’s eligible to play most road games. Kyrie contributed 22 points in 32 minutes for the Nets’ 129-121 win over the Pacers.

TENNIS

In more COVID vaccine news, the world’s #1 player Novak Djokovic received an exemption from the Australian Open to fly to Melbourne for the tournament. Upon arriving at the airport, officials detained him, and the Australian government weighed in, saying his visa doesn’t allow for medical exemptions to the vaccine. He is currently detained at a hotel for refugees while his lawyers look into his case.
