Julio Jones Joins Tom Brady, NFL’s Coverage Of Training Camp, Notre Dame’s “Hangover” Reveal
FOOTBALL
Seven-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, Julio Jones, is joining Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a one-year deal.
The NFL is trying to capitalize on training camps with up to 13 hours of live coverage. The NFL Network kicks things off with “Back Together Saturday” on July 30th, the first day teams are in pads, with exclusive access to all 32 teams.
In college football, Notre Dame had some fun showing off their new white uniforms. For fans of the movie “Hangover“, you’ll appreciate this reveal.

The NFL is launching NFL+, a subscription service that will provide streaming access to live regular-season and playoff games. The only caveat (for now) is it will only be available on a tablet or phone.
OTHER
CBS Sports announced the eighth edition of their “Best in College Sports” rankings (with points for football and basketball outweighing other sports). The Michigan Wolverines blew away the competition taking 1st place with 588.50 points compared to Notre Dave at 512.5 points and Ohio State at 506.75 points. Rounding out the top five is North Carolina (470.5 pts) and Arkansas (440.5 pts). Michigan is the only school to win this award twice.

Kyler Murray Signs Massive Extension W/Cardinals, Gronk Retires (Again), Garoppolo Looking For Trade, Harden Signs, Ohtani/Ledecky ESPY Best Athletes
FOOTBALL
Quarterback Kyler Murray will stay with the Arizona Cardinals through 2028 after signing an extension worth $230.5 million including $160 million guaranteed. Murray was the #1 pick in the 2019 NFL draft.
Rob Gronkowski retired (again), although his agent told ESPN he would “not be surprised” to see Gronk return for the season.
The San Francisco 49ers have officially told quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo he can look for a trade, signaling to Trey Lance he will be the new starter. Garoppolo had a great run in SF leading the team to two NFC title games and one Super Bowl appearance.
BASKETBALL
James Harden agreed to a two-year $68.6 million contract extension with the Philadelphia 76ers (a pay cut allowing the Sixers to sign other players in free agency).
OTHER
Shohei Ohtani won Best Men’s Athlete and Katie Ledecky won Best Women’s Athlete at the ESPY’s (award show sponsored by ESPN). Steph Curry hosted the show and in his opening monologue roasted LeBron James.

Cameron Smith Wins British Open
GOLF
Twenty-eight year old Australian Cameron Smith won the British Open at St. Andrews. This is Smith’s first major championship. Smith started the day four shots behind favorite Rory McIlroy then finished 20-under par. After his big win, he joked about celebrating by discovering how many beers would fit into the Claret Jug trophy.

Djokovic Wins Wimbledon For 4th Straight Time, Kazakhstan’s Rybakina Wins, MLB Starters-Shohei Makes History, Judge/Acuña Jr. Most Votes
TENNIS
Novak Djokovic beat Nick Kyrgios to win his fourth straight Wimbledon championship. The win marks his seventh career Wimbledon title. The only other player with more Wimbledon titles is Roger Federer (with eight). Djokovic is not vaccinated (and has no plans to get the vaccine) so he’ll likely be unable to compete in the upcoming US Open.
The women’s title went to Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan, the first player representing Kazakhstan to win a major.
BASEBALL
The Major League Baseball All-Star Game starters were announced. The Angels Shohei Ohtani made history (again) by being selected for the second straight season as both a batter and pitcher. The Yankees’ Aaron Judge received the most fan votes for the American League, while the Braves’ Ronald Acuña Jr. received the most votes from fans in the National League.

The Cleveland Browns’ #1 pick in 2018, quarterback Baker Mayfield, has been traded and will now compete for the starting job in Carolina against Sam Darnold (the #3 pick in 2018).

President Biden awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 17 people including gymnast Simone Biles (youngest to ever receive this honor) and soccer player Megan Rapinoe.
HORSE RACING
The horse racing industry implemented new safety rules including limiting the use of the riding crop (whip) during races and prohibiting devices (like cattle prods) that are used to desensitize horses.
TENNIS
Rafael Nadal had to withdraw from his semifinal match at Wimbledon because of an abdominal tear. Nick Kyrgios will now face either #1 seed Novak Djokovic or #9 seed Cameron Norrie.

The Utah Jazz traded Rudy Gobert (three-time NBA Defensive Player of the year) to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Malik Beasley, Walker Kessler, and some first-round picks. Gobert has played for the Jazz for the entire nine years he’s been in the NBA.
HOT DOG EATING
The GOAT of hot dog eating, Joey Chestnut easily claimed his 15th victory at the famous Nathan’s Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest by downing 63 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. It is Chestnut’s 15th win in the past 16 contests.
Miki Sudo triumphed on the women’s side eating 40 hot dogs and buns for her eighth win in nine years. The only reason she didn’t win last year was that she was pregnant and not competing.
SOCCER
The US men’s soccer team qualified for the Summer Olympics for the first time since 2008.

UCLA and USC shook up the college sports world by announcing they are leaving the PAC 12 Conference and joining the Big Ten. The move amplifies that there are now two super leagues, the Big Ten and the SEC. It will be interesting to see how this shakes out over the next few years and how other teams respond.
BASKETBALL
The NBA free-agency period has begun, and to no one’s surprise, there were some big announcements.
James Harden chose to re-sign with the Sixers for a lower salary allowing the team to add other players to their roster, while Denver’s Nikola Jokić ($264 million) signed the largest contract in NBA history to stay with his team.
The top story of the day is Kevin Durant’s request to be traded from the Brooklyn Nets (which comes only days after his teammate Kyrie Irving re-signed with the team).
