WATERCOOLER CHAT: MILLER MAY HURT BRONCOS, TY LAWSON DOMESTIC ABUSE CHARGE, AUSTRALIAN PLAYER KILLED FOR BOREDOM

FOOTBALL

In the NFL, the Denver Broncos are expected to have an exceptional season this year.  They don’t have much competition in the AFC West, and Peyton Manning looks at the top of his game.  But Monday, it looks like they were dealt a major blow.  Their all-star defensive back Von Miller recently got in trouble for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.  Many thought he could face a 4-game suspension, but now it looks like Miller actually may be handed a 6-game suspension.  In the NFL, every game you play counts, and every win matters when you’re racing for Home Field Advantage or even just a playoff spot.  Not having Miller out there is really going to hurt the Broncos.  It’s not a done deal yet, but it’s looking quite probable.

BASKETBALL

Denver Nuggets star point guard Ty Lawson was arrested on domestic violence charges.  Allegedly, there were claims of “striking, shoving, and kicking”.  Lawson is out on a $1000 bond, but it’s always upsetting when a once likable star player has a character issue like this.  Clearly, we don’t know all the issues now, but if the charges are true, he will rightly lose the support of his many fans.

BASEBALL

And in some horrible news out of Oklahoma, an Australian baseball player playing for East Central University in Oklahoma, was murdered in cold blood.  He was killed, according to reports, because a group of three teenagers were bored.  The teens told police that they were bored, so they wanted to see what it felt like to kill somebody.  They arbitrarily chose Christopher Lane, who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.  The kids drove up on him, and shot him in the back.  It’s just a tragic, evil story.  Lane had just returned from Australia a week ago to begin school in the fall.
