WATERCOOLER CHAT: MNF SHOWDOWN, SF 49ERS FIRE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR, ANTHONY STARTING SEASON AS NUGGET
FOOTBALL
In the NFL, it was a rivalry Monday Night football showdown between the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears. And on top of the rivalry, both of these teams were undefeated and trying to go 3-0. The Packers have an explosive offense, and the Bears are SUPPOSED to have an explosive offense.  That hasn’t come to perfect fruition yet, but in the meantime, they have been utilizing their fantastic defense. The game got off to a quick start with Green Bay’s quarterback hitting Greg Jennings in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. But then, Chicago got back in the game behind an amazing kick-off return from their speedster Devin Hester. The Packers pulled ahead again with an Aaron Rodgers touchdown run, but Jay Cutler marched the Bears down the field with just enough time left for a game-winning field goal. And the Bears are the last undefeated team in the NFC. Wow! Chicago 20, Green Bay 17.
Elsewhere in the NFL, the San Francisco 49ers have had an abysmal side to their season. Their offense looks sloppy and lackluster. They decided to make an immediate change by firing offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye. Apparently, Raye’s offensive play calling was poorly communicated and unimaginative. They were predictable, and, therefore, easy to stop. The Niners quarterbacks coach, Mike Johnson, will take over as offensive coordinator and will hopefully bring some life back to this putrid offense. They have a solid running game with Frank Gore, but they need to ignite their passing attack. Alex Smith is capable of good things, especially with weapons like tight-end Vernon Davis and last year’s high wide-receiver draft pick, Michael Crabtree. He just needs someone smart calling the shots.
BASKETBALL
Finally, in the NBA, there was news that the Denver Nuggets’ Carmelo Anthony would be traded to the New Jersey Nets in a 4-team deal. This had Jersey residents ecstatic, and all signs indicated that this was a done deal. However, yesterday, the Nuggets said the trade wasn’t a lock and that they are keeping all options open for Carmelo. Anthony is still one of the 10 best players in the league and they will need some seriously golden pieces in return for him. Plus, Anthony said yesterday that he never told anybody that he wanted to be traded. This completely contradicts all reports, but it is feasible in the world of rapid-fire journalism. Melo said that he would sit down at the end of the season and discuss his future, but for now, he’s ready to start the season as a Nugget.
