Ohio State Wins First Ever National Championship, Ohio Furniture Chain Out Millions In Win, Fox Leaving Broncos

FOOTBALL

In college football, it was the game we’ve all been waiting for… The National Championship.  The game featured #2 Oregon vs. #4 Ohio State.  Ohio State was red hot coming into this game (having beaten #1 Alabama), and wanted to prove that they were in fact the best team in the country.  Oregon, on the other hand, was finally looking for its first National Championship after so many years of showing they have the flashiest and most creative offense.  So how would it play out?

Ezekiel ElliottOhio State got the early advantage, but then Oregon’s offense kicked into gear behind their Heisman Trophy Winning quarterback Marcus Mariotta.  The real star of the game, however, outside of Ohio State’s staunch defense, was their running back Ezekiel Elliott.  Elliott broke a national championship record, rushing for over 200 yards and four touchdowns. Oregon simply could not stop him. It was a thrilling and meaningful win for the Buckeyes. Not only did they occupy the final playoff spot but due to injuries to their top two quarterbacks, they were starting their third-string QB, Cardale Jones, who played solidly in only his third career start.  The Buckeye’s coach, Urban Meyer, won his 3rd National Championship, and Ohio State proved that this year’s college playoff system was a huge success.  Ohio State 42, Oregon 20.

In a fun story of the night, a furniture company in Ohio bet big on the Buckeyes. They promised customers that bought at least $1,999 of furniture between December 17th and January 1st a refund if Ohio State won by more than 7 points. This might have sounded like a good idea at the time, but looks like they will be out $1.5 million in free furniture.
Finally, in the NFL, just one day after losing to the Indianapolis Colts, Broncos coach John Fox has decided to step down from the position.   Fox and the Broncos mutually agreed to part ways.  This was likely because of Fox’s age and health conditions, and everyone is expecting the Broncos to promote offensive coordinator Adam Gase to head coach.  Gase, however, is drawing strong interest from the San Francisco 49ers, and it will be curious to see how this plays out.  The major question now though… is Peyton Manning coming back next year?
