Teixeira & A-Rod Retiring, Ledecky Dominates, Phelphs Triumphant Return, Williams Sisters Fall

BASEBALL

Big retirement news in baseball. Yankees First baseman Mark Teixeira will retire at the end of season. At 36 years old, Teixeira has battled multiple injuries over the last few years. He’s also in the final year of his $180 million dollar contract so he should be able to enjoy his retirement in style.

New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez also announced his retirement and said his last game will be August 12th. After that, he’ll consult for the team. A-Rod was the #1 pick by the Seattle Mariners in the 1993 draft. Seven years later he signed a 10 year $252 million dollar deal with the Texas Rangers (the largest deal ever in sports). In 2007, Rodriquez signed another record setting 10 year deal with the New York Yankees for $275 million. A-Rod’s legacy as one of baseball’s all-time home run leaders is only marred by his admission and suspension for performance enhancing drugs which kept him off the field for the 2014 season.

OLYMPICS

Katie LedeckyIn some highlights from the Olympics, swimming phenom Katie Ledecky dominated again by beating her own record (with no one even close) to grab the Gold medal in the 400-meter freestyle. Ledecky will be a freshman at Stanford this year. At 31 years old, Michael Phelps looked like his young self and helped bring the gold to his team in the men’s 4×100 relay. This is Phelps 19th Gold medal!

USA didn’t fare so well in tennis over the weekend. Powerhouse doubles partners, Serena and Venus Williams lost in the first round to a Czech team who had never won a match as doubles partners.  The Williams sisters had previously never LOST a match in the Olympics togethers.
