Ledecky’s Astounding 800 Meters, Bolt Makes History, Phelps More Golds Than Most Countries, Biles Wins Again, Hope Solo Bad Loser

OLYMPICS

Katie Ledecky set a world record with her astounding win in the 800 meter freestyle. It was no surprise to anyone who’s been watching Ledecky, she would win in this event as it’s her strongest, but her margin of victory was purely breathtaking. The best description I’ve seen is from Washington Post reporter, Dave Sheinin who wrote,”The men’s 100-meter dash final Sunday in track and field will begin and end in the time she spent waiting.” The win gives Ledecky her fourth gold of the Olympics.

Usain BoltAnd speaking of the men’s 100 meter dash, the fastest man in the World, Jamaica’s Usain Bolt made history by winning his third straight Gold. No one has ever won three consecutive Golds in this event.

Michael PhelpsWith his 23rd Gold medal over the weekend in the 4×100 meter relay, Michael Phelps cements his legacy as the greatest Olympic athlete of all time. He has now won more Olympic medals than anyone from any other country and if Phelps was his own country, he’d be tied with South Africa in 38th place for most Golds.

Simone Biles won yet another Gold (her 3rd so far) with two difficult vaults. Biles has two more individual events left, the balance beam and floor exercises, so expect some more hardware before the week is over.

In women’s soccer, the US Team was considered favorites but fell to Sweden in the quarterfinals. Losses happen in the world of sports, but the always controversial US goalie Hope Solo, made the sting of the loss much worse by complaining her opponents were cowards by playing conservatively. Solo is rightfully getting vilified on social media for acting like a sore loser.
