WATERCOOLER CHAT: REDSKINS PROBLEM, 49ERS PLAYING HARD, ST. LOUIS IN WORLD SERIES

FOOTBALL

In the NFL, the Philadelphia Eagles sorely needed a win this week if they wanted to have any chance at salvaging their season.  But they would have to do it on the road in Washington (a tough place to play when the Redskins are doing well).  Then again, it was finally time for Redskins fans to realize… that Rex Grossman is their starting quarterback (a guy who has been criticized for being sloppy his entire career).  Grossman threw 4 interceptions on the day and was benched for back-up QB John Beck.  But most of the story was on the Eagles side of the ball where LeSean McCoy rushed for 126 yards and a touchdown.  Now the Eagles are inching in the right direction, but the Redskins have a serious problem at QB.  Philadelphia 20, Washington 13.

And in Detroit, the Lions were hoping to stay unbeaten against an oddly surging San Francisco 49ers squad.  Many weren’t sure if the 49ers were for real, but a competitive showing in Detroit would prove that they are a force to be feared.  Niners running-back Frank Gore ran for 141 yards and a touchdown and the Niners defense had 2 sacks and 10 quarterback hits.  The Niners have a talented squad and sometimes all a quality team needs is an attitude adjustment.  Former Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh came in and made such an adjustment.  He has this team motivated and playing HARD!  Even Alex Smith, who has been desperate for a good season, is finally starting to look like a #1 draft pick.  The Lions have their first loss, and the Niners are 5-1.  San Francisco 25, Detroit 19.

BASEBALL

The St. Louis Cardinals barely made it into the playoffs.  But they got by the mighty Philadelphia Phillies and have been beating up the Milwaukee Brewers.  Their bats are just HOT right now.  And you can bet that Game 6 would be wild.  In just 3 innings we had 6 home runs.  You can’t exactly ask for much more as a fan.  The Cardinals were up 6-4.  And from there — they never looked back.  Behind clutch hits from Nick Punto and Allen Craig, the Cards piled on even more runs.  The Brewers simply looked sloppy out there, and couldn’t get a rally going.  Albert Pujols batted in another run in the 8th for good measure, and the Cardinals are headed to another World Series.  Now — get ready for a showdown of pure hitting power as the St. Louis Cardinals take on the Texas Rangers.  They may not be the Yankees, Red Sox, or Phillies, but these two teams look fantastic right now, and this series is a must watch.
