Jazz Even Series, Redick Canceled GMAT, Wade Surprised Shaw On Ellen, Redskin Cheerleaders, Witten Retiring
BASKETBALL
The Utah Jazz evened up the series against the Houston Rockets by taking game 2. The series is now tied 1-1. Jazz 116, Rockets 108.
Back in December, Philadelphia 76ers guard (and Duke alum) JJ Redick made plans to take the GMAT in April, figuring his team wasn’t likely to make the playoffs. Fast forward to the end of the season, and Redick clearly had other priorities forcing him to cancel the test. He said, “We were really bad in December up until Christmas, I think we lost 10 of 12 games during one stretch. And I signed up to take the GMAT on April 21, which was the first Saturday after the regular season ended. Obviously I had to cancel that because I was in Miami for Game 4.” Redick even scored a team-high 24 points in a win over the Heat.
Speaking of the Heat, future Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade surprised Waffle House shooting hero James Shaw on the Ellen show. Ellen asked Shaw who his hero was, and when he said Dwyane Wade, Wade walked on stage to greet Shaw. Wade told Shaw he was his hero and handed him a $20,000 check to continue his work on behalf of the victims of the shooting.
FOOTBALL
The NFL has faced criticism for how they treat cheerleaders. The complaints range from sexual harassment, gender discrimination, hostile work environment, and low pay for long hours. The New York Times recently reported on a Washington Redskins trip to Costa Rica where big donors watched the cheerleaders nude photo shoot and then mandated some of the women accompany the donors (all men) to a nightclub. According to one of the cheerleaders, “It’s just not right to send cheerleaders out with strange men when some of the girls clearly don’t want to go. But unfortunately, I feel like it won’t change until something terrible happens, like a girl is assaulted in some way, or raped. I think teams will start paying attention to this only when it’s too late.â€
In other football news, Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten announced he will retire from the Cowboys and will become an ESPN analyst on Monday Night Football.
