Heisman Candidates Announced, Eli Back In Loss On MNF, Russia Banned From Olympics

FOOTBALL

The finalists for the Heisman Trophy (awarded to the most outstanding college football player) were announced. LSU quarterback Joe Burrow, Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts, Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields and Ohio State defensive end Chase Young will travel to New York for the awards ceremony on Saturday night at 8:00 pm ET.  Burrow (who played his first three years at Ohio State) is the odds-on favorite to win.

In Monday Night Football, Giants quarterback Eli Manning was back on the field replacing injured rookie Daniel Jones. Eli looked solid in the first half throwing for two touchdowns, but couldn’t hold the momentum and lost 23-17 in overtime to the Philadelphia Eagles. It’s unclear whether Eli will play again this season (Jones has an ankle sprain), or if he’ll retire at the end of the year.

OLYMPICS

The World Anti-Doping Agency banned Russia from international sports for tampering with drug-testing data. The judgment prevents Russia from having a formal presence at the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo and the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing. Russian athletes will be allowed to compete as long as they haven’t been individually involved in doping or tampering. Russia will certainly appeal this ruling so stay tuned for a final decision.
