WTA Suspends Tournaments In China, Enes Kanter Freedom Becomes US Citizen, Curry’s First NIL Deal W/College Freshman, MLB Lockout

The Women’s Tennis Association will suspend all of its tournaments in China after tennis player Peng Shuai hasn’t been seen since her allegations of sexual assault. The WTA, as opposed to other Leagues, has taken a strong stand. In a recent statement, the WTA chairman Steve Simon said, “I don’t see how I can ask our athletes to compete there when Peng Shuai is not allowed to communicate freely and has seemingly been pressured to contradict her allegation of sexual assault.â€
Boston Celtics star Enes Kanter, who was the 3rd overall pick in the NBA draft in 2011, has used his platform in the NBA to protest human-rights issues in China. Kanter recently became a U.S. citizen and changed his name to Enes Kanter Freedom.
BASKETBALL
Azzi Fudd, a UConn freshman basketball player, signed a name, image, and likeness (NIL) endorsement deal with Golden State Warriors Stephen Curry. Part of the deal involves Curry mentoring Fudd as the “next face of women’s basketball”. This partnership is the first NIL deal between an NBA player and a college player.
BASEBALL
Major League Baseball is in a labor dispute with the players union and has now entered a lockout that halts all of its operations. The season doesn’t officially begin for three more months, but it’s the first lockout in 27 years and only the ninth in league history.
