WTA Suspends Tournaments In China, Enes Kanter Freedom Becomes US Citizen, Curry’s First NIL Deal W/College Freshman, MLB Lockout

TENNIS

The Women’s Tennis Association will suspend all of its tournaments in China after tennis player Peng Shuai hasn’t been seen since her allegations of sexual assault. The WTA, as opposed to other Leagues, has taken a strong stand. In a recent statement, the WTA chairman Steve Simon said, “I don’t see how I can ask our athletes to compete there when Peng Shuai is not allowed to communicate freely and has seemingly been pressured to contradict her allegation of sexual assault.”

Boston Celtics star Enes Kanter, who was the 3rd overall pick in the NBA draft in 2011, has used his platform in the NBA to protest human-rights issues in China. Kanter recently became a U.S. citizen and changed his name to Enes Kanter Freedom.

BASKETBALL

Azzi Fudd, a UConn freshman basketball player, signed a name, image, and likeness (NIL) endorsement deal with Golden State Warriors Stephen Curry. Part of the deal involves Curry mentoring Fudd as the “next face of women’s basketball”. This partnership is the first NIL deal between an NBA player and a college player.

BASEBALL

Major League Baseball is in a labor dispute with the players union and has now entered a lockout that halts all of its operations.  The season doesn’t officially begin for three more months, but it’s the first lockout in 27 years and only the ninth in league history.

In other NFL news, Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey is out for the rest of the 2021 season with an ankle injury.

Big Upsets In Rivalry Week In College Football, Bucs Defender Laughs When Tooth Falls Out, WR Deebo’s Rushing Stats

FOOTBALL

There were some important NFL games over the weekend, but the big stories came from rivalry week in the college football world.

With only one week to go in the regular season, three big matchups stirred up some drama. Here’s what happened:

Michigan beat Ohio State for the first time in 10 years. With the win, the Wolverines will play in the Big Ten championship game and may even get a College Football Playoff birth. And, Ohio State’s hopes for a playoff berth are essentially over. Michigan 42, Ohio State 27.

Alabama beat Auburn 24-22 to win the Iron Bowl, but it didn’t look pretty. The Crimson Tide needed four overtimes to pull off the win. They will now face #1 ranked Georgia next weekend for the SEC Championship.

Oklahoma State barely edged out Oklahoma 37-33 and knocked the Sooners out of the playoff race.

For the rest of the College Football Playoff picture, click here.

In the NFL, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers showed some real strength (especially with Leonard Fournette’s four touchdowns) in their win over the Indianapolis Colts. The Bucs defense also did their part and even had a laugh when their defensive lineman Vita Vea lost a tooth caused by a helmet to his mouth.

The San Francisco 49ers have won three straight games and have moved up in the NFC rankings thanks to the rushing efforts of wide receiver Deebo Samuel. He’s the first wide receiver since 1967 with a rushing touchdown in three straight games.

Bears Snap Losing Streak, Cowboys Defense Issues, Josh Allen’s 4 TD’s In Bills Win

FOOTBALL

Here’s a recap of the Thanksgiving NFL games!

In the first game of the day, the Chicago Bears snapped a five-game losing streak in a very boring win over the Detroit Lions. Bears 16, Lions 14.

The Dallas Cowboys tried valiantly to stage a comeback in the second game of the day, but thanks to the Las Vegas Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson’s field goal in overtime (his fifth of the game), and the Cowboys defensive penalties (Anthony Brown had four defensive pass interferences), the Raiders prevailed 36-33 OT.

In the final game of the day, thanks to Buffalo QB Josh Allen’s four touchdowns, the Bills destroyed the New Orleans Saints 31-6. In the last two seasons, only Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers have more games with 4-plus passing touchdowns than Allen. Both Brady and Rodgers have 9 each.

LeBron/Stewart Suspensions, Shumpert Wins DWTS, Shuai Emerges, Bucs Beat Giants MNF

BASKETBALL

LeBron James elbowed Isaiah Stewart in the face on Sunday night leading to an on-court tussle. Both players were ejected, and LeBron will miss Tuesday’s game against the NY Knicks. It’s LeBron’s first suspension in his 19 years in the League. Stewart was suspended for two games for continuing to engage LeBron in the altercation even after the play was finished.

Former NBA player Iman Shumpert and his dancing partner Daniella Karagach won Dancing with the Stars becoming the only former NBA player to win the competition and the only NBA player to make even make it to the Finals. Watch their amazing freestyle routine.

TENNIS

The tennis star, Peng Shuai, finally emerged over the weekend in a 30-minute video call with IOC President Thomas Bach. The call and subsequent videos and photos of Peng out and about didn’t satisfy WTA CEO Steve Simon who is demanding a full investigation into her disappearance over the last few weeks and her allegations of sexual assault. Simon is threatening to pull out of tournaments in China over the incident.

FOOTBALL

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had no trouble cruising to an easy 30-10 victory over the NY Giants on Monday Night Football.

Patriots Crush Falcons, Brown Fake Vaccine, Newton’s 50 Free Tkts, Peng Shuai Ordeal, Harper/Ohtani MVP’s, Curry Shining

FOOTBALL

The New England Patriots crushed the Atlanta Falcons 25-0 on Thursday Night Football thanks to their defense which made four interceptions and had four sacks.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Brown is in hot water again. His former chef accused Brown of not paying him $10,000 for services rendered and showed a text exchange implicating Brown and his  girlfriend of buying fake vaccination cards.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton certainly entertained the crowd in his first press conference since returning to his old team. He arrived in a fedora hat with a Clark Kent press pass (Cam is known as Superman for his touchdown celebrations). He also promised to give away 50 free tickets to the Panthers home game this weekend to fans who have never been to the Bank of America stadium. And, then to cap it all off, he moon danced off the podium.

TENNIS

Tennis start Peng Shuai is still missing. Two weeks ago she posted on social media of sexual assault by a powerful government official. The posts were quickly deleted but then she went missing, and no one has seen from her since. A couple of days ago the Chinese government released a statement attributed to her stating that she was fine and no assault ever took place, but most are skeptical the statement was actually from her. The Women’s Tennis Association has been heavily weighing in on this issue, and there are now questions about what to do with the upcoming Winter Olympics in Beijing if this situation is as dire as it seems.

BASEBALL

Bryce Harper was awarded the National League MVP and Shohei Ohtani took home the American League MVP awards Thursday night. Ohtani got a unanimous vote, while Harper received 17 of 30 first-place votes.

BASKETBALL

Steph Curry continues to shine in the Warriors decisive 104-89 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. With 40 points, four rebounds and six assists, he made history again by making at least nine 3-pointers for the 38th time in his career. According to ESPN Stats and Info, “he now has more nine 3-pointer games since April (10) than any other player in NBA their entire NBA career.”
