Packers Selling Stock, 49ers Beat Rams On MNF, Deebo Dons Celebratory Chain

FOOTBALL

The Green Bay Packers will offer up 300,000 shares of stock at $300 each in their first stock sale since 2011. The sale begins Tuesday morning and will end on February 25th, 2022. The Packers will use the money for improvements to Lambeau Field. The Packers are the only publicly owned team in the NFL.

On Monday Night Football, the San Francisco 49ers handily beat the Los Angeles Rams 31-10 for their first home win in more than a year. One of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s two touchdown passes went to wide receive Deebo Samuel who quickly donned the team’s celebratory gold chain necklace. According to Samuel, teammate Jason Verrett “got it for the team. Whenever you make a play, you put it on.”

Pats Win Streak, WFT Ends Losing Streak, Harris Now Knows About Tie Games, Cam’s Impressive Debut

FOOTBALL

Some highlights from the weekend’s NFL games:

The New England Patriots are on a four-game win streak thanks to rookie quarterback Mac Jones who threw for three touchdowns in a massive 45-7 win over the Cleveland Browns. Kudos to Patriots wide receiver Jakobi Meyers who finally scored a touchdown after having the most catches (134) and most receiving yards (1,560) without seeing the endzone.

And, speaking of streaks, the Washington Football Team ended their four-game losing streak by shutting down the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 29-19. The defending Super Bowl champs QB Tom Brady had a rough day after getting intercepted twice in his first 6 passes.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions ended their day in a sloppy 16-16 rain-soaked tie marked by four penalties, two turnovers, three fumbles, and one missed field goal (and that was just in overtime).  After the game, Steelers running back Najee Harris got some attention by saying he didn’t realize it was possible to have a tie game in the NFL.

Cam Newton had a memorable debut in his return to the Carolina Panthers by scoring twice in his first two possessions leading to a 34-10 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

Dolphins Pull Out Win Thanks To Tua, Odell Signs W/Rams, Newton Signs W/Panthers, Soccer Scandal

FOOTBALL

Jacoby Brissett started at quarterback for the Miami Dolphins on Thursday Night Football, but was replaced by Tua Tagovailoa (who had a fractured finger). Tua scored late in the game to give the team a 22-10 win over the Baltimore Ravens.

In other NFL news, Odell Beckham Jr., who was released by the Cleveland Browns, has signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams. And, quarterback Cam Newton, who was cut by the New England Patriots in August, is returning to Charlotte for a one year deal. Cam won the NFL MVP award in 2015 and led the Panthers to Super Bowl 50 but then struggled with injuries the last few years.

SOCCER

In an odd story out of the soccer world, a Paris St-Germain player was arrested for potential foul play in an attack on her teammate by masked men. According to reports, Aminata Diallo was giving her teammate Kheira Hamraoui (who has replaced her as a starter on the team), a ride home from a team dinner when masked men pulled Hamraoui from the car and beat her up. The investigation is ongoing.

BASKETBALL

The NBA is continuing to investigate Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver for allegations of racism, misogyny and a bad work environment. Meanwhile his wife Penny has reportedly been sending “intimidating messages” to try and “set the record straight” to a few former Suns employees.

D-III Yeshiva University defeated Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday night bringing its win streak to 39 games, the longest winning streak across all levels of men’s college basketball. The Maccabees coach, Elliot Steinmetz, became coach in 2014 and has led the team to winning seasons ever since. And, in 2020, Steinmetz was named coach of the year for leading the Maccabees to the Sweet 16 of the National Tournament.

Broncos/Browns Know How To Win, Titans Shock Rams, Steelers Beat Bears For Tomlin’s 150 wins, Raiders Release Arnette, LeBron Out, Bucks Visit WH

FOOTBALL

According to the Sports Business Journal, interest in the NFL is on the upswing. This year, NFL games are slated to have the highest number of games in TV’s top 100 telecasts.

With that said, here is a highlight of some of the weekend/Monday night games:

The Denver Broncos lost their defensive star Von Miller, and the Cleveland Browns broke up with Odell Beckham Jr, but both teams managed big wins over the weekend. The Broncos dominated the Dallas Cowboys (who had QB Dak Prescott back on the field) 30-16, while the Browns, thanks to running back Nick Chubb, ran over the Cincinnati Bengals 41-16.

The Tennessee Titans, without their star Derrick Henry, shocked everyone with a 28-16 win over the Los Angeles Rams. And at 36 years old, Adrian Peterson came off the practice squad to score a touchdown.

On Monday night football, the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Chicago Bears 29-27, giving coach Mike Tomlin the second-most wins in franchise history (150).

In other NFL news, the Las Vegas Raiders are having some major personnel problems. After releasing first-round pick Henry Ruggs III for driving under the influence resulting in the death of a driver, they’ve now released Damon Arnette for threatening to kill someone. Arnette was also a first-round pick (19th overall in 2020 from Ohio State).

BASKETBALL

LeBron James could be out for four to eight weeks due to an abdominal strain.

The Milwaukee Bucks were honored at the White House for their 2021 NBA title. They are the first team to visit the White House in almost five years.

Browns To Release Odell Beckham Jr., Scorigami In TNF, Suns Owner’s Toxic Work Environment

FOOTBALL

According to reports, the Cleveland Browns plan to release wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Beckham’s father has been on social media bashing the Browns’ quarterback, and Beckham hasn’t been at practice all week, so there appears to be no love lost on the team for him.

In Thursday night football, the Indianapolis Colts beat the NY Jets 45-30. In case you’re wondering if that’s an unusual score, it is. It’s a Scorigami (a unique score that’s never happened before in that sport).

BASKETBALL

In a developing story from ESPN, Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver has been accused of “fostering a  toxic work environment, repeated racially insensitive remarks, and misogynistic comments toward women in the organization.”

Aaron Rodgers Tests Positive For COVID And Is Unvaccinated

FOOTBALL

The big story in the NFL is not just that Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers tested positive for the coronavirus (and will miss Sunday’s high profile matchup against The Kansas City Chiefs), but that he is unvaccinated. According to reports, when Rodgers was asked earlier in the season if he was vaccinated, he said he “received homeopathic treatment from his personal doctor to raise his antibody levels.” The League will continue to look into this situation. Jordan Love will take over the QB duties on Sunday.

KC Scrapes Win Over Giants, Rams Trade For Von Miller, Winston & Henry Serious Injuries

FOOTBALL

The Kansas City Chiefs barely scraped together a win over an unimpressive New York Giants on Monday Night Football. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his offense will need to pull it together to survive against tougher teams. Kansas City 20, NY Giants 17.

In a blockbuster NFL move, the LA Rams traded two second and third-round draft picks for Denver Broncos Pro-Bowl pass-rusher Von Miller. Miller was selected with the second overall pick in the 2011 draft, and since then he has 8 Pro Bowl appearances and a 2011 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and Super Bowl 50 MVP. And, not to be forgotten, Von Miller had a memorable turn in season 22 of Dancing with the Stars.

Unfortunately, there have been some significant injuries in the last week. Saints quarterback Jameis Winston will miss the rest of the season due to a torn ACL, and the Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry has a potentially season-ending broken foot.

Backup QB’s Save The Day, Texans Holding Watson Till After Deadline, Astros Stay Alive

FOOTBALL

The big story from the NFL weekend was the successful play of a few backup quarterbacks. In his first career start, Mike White led the NY Jets with 405 yards, 3 touchdowns (and 2 interceptions) to a big 34-31 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Trevor Siemian took over for an injured Jameis Winston to lead the New Orleans Saints to a 36-27 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while Geno Smith (who has been taking over for Russell Wilson) led the Seattle Seahawks to a lopsided 31-7 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. And, Cooper Rush, in his first NFL start as a fifth-year backup, led the Dallas Cowboys past the Minnesota Vikings 20-16.

In other NFL news, the Houston Texans are reportedly prepared to hold on to quarterback Deshaun Watson until after the NFL trade deadline. According to ESPN, the team is ready to talk trade options but don’t want to until the offseason where they feel they can get a better deal.

BASEBALL

The Houston Astros took game 5 against the Atlant Braves to stay alive in the World Series. Atlanta, who is up 3-2, is just one win away from the Championship. Game 6 is Tuesday in Houston.
