WATERCOOLER CHAT: PHELPS GRABBED ANOTHER GOLD, GABBY FLAWLESS, MEN’S BBALL RECORD BREAKING

OLYMPICS

In the Olympics, a major anticipated event is swimming.  In the opening weekend, Michael Phelps took on Ryan Lochte in the race where Lochte was supposed to unseat the swimming kid… and he did.  Lochte took gold and Phelps didn’t even medal.  People thought that Phelps had seen his last day, and Lochte would be the new golden boy we saw in many commercials over the next 2 years.  So when they took each other on in the 200m individual medley, it was time for Phelps’ revenge.  Phelps and Lochte were neck and neck down the stretch, but Phelps turned on his magic and grabbed gold at the end.  But he didn’t do his big celebration of pounding the water — just played it cool, and grinned a bit.  That’s 3 Olympics in a row that Phelps has won gold in this event.  Phelps has one more individual race in this Olympics, and that’s the 100m Fly tomorrow night.

Elsewhere, it was the individual final in women’s gymnastics.  Every country can only send 2 gymnasts, even though the U.S. could have easily sent 4, including Jordan Weber.  But representing USA were Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman.  And their only major competition were the Russians — two amazing gymnasts who were favored to win gold.  Aly Raisman stumbled a bit, but Douglas was fantastic throughout.  It all came down to a duel on the floor exercise between Douglas and Russia’s Viktoria Komova.  Douglas was amazing on the floor (dancing to LMFAO’s Party Rock Anthem), but Komova was equally as brilliant.  So it was the judges’ call.  And when all was said and done, Komova’s score was not good enough to catch Douglas, and for the third year in a row, the Americans take home the gold.

Finally, in men’s basketball, the US were at it again — this time against Nigeria.  Nigeria boasts just one NBA player, the Hornets Al Farouq-Aminu, and that would not be enough to take on the likes of LeBron James and Chris Paul.  And this game was special.  The US absolutely caught fire.  They hit 29 3-pointers, 10 of which came from Carmelo Anthony and simply destroyed Nigeria.  Every single US player, including all the bench guys, scored in double digits.  And if that wasn’t enough, they ran up the score too, scoring an Olympic record-breaking 156 points.  Nobody can touch these guys.  However, it’s not over until it’s over.  The elimination rounds are coming up.  USA 156, Nigeria 73.
