Warriors/Cavs NBA Finals Highest Rating Since Michael Jordan in 1998, Denver Nuggets Draft News, Manziel Retiring Cash Celebration

BASKETBALL

Michael JordanThe Golden State Warriors beating the Cleveland Cavaliers to become world champions, generated the highest TV ratings for a Finals since 1998, when Michael Jordan won his last championship.  This ratings boost is likely due to two factors:  People are extremely interested in LeBron and Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors have seemingly picked up a huge bandwagon following as their hit-a-3-from-anywhere basketball is so fun to watch.  The NBA should be thrilled as there is a good chance that both Golden State and a healthier, more powerful Cleveland Cavs could be back in the finals next year.

The end of the playoffs signals another exciting event:  The NBA Draft on June 25th.  In some pre-draft trade news, the Denver Nuggets are in rebuilding mode, and have grown tired of the off-the-field antics of their speedy point guard Ty Lawson.  According to reports, the Nuggets are trying to trade Lawson to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for the #6 pick.  They really want to acquire some new, young talent.  Expect a lot of trades come draft night.  As of now, the Minnesota Timberwolves have the #1 pick, the Los Angeles Lakers the #2 pick, the Philadelphia 76ers at #3, the New York Knicks at #4 and the Orlando Magic at #5.

FOOTBALL

Johnny ManzielIn the NFL, Cleveland’s Johnny Manziel is trying to turn a new leaf and make a career for himself in the league.  Last year, Manziel had a substance abuse problem which required rehab. Now, in his first effort to show he has changed, Manziel publicly told the media yesterday that he would be retiring his “Cash Money” celebration.  When he was drafted, Manziel rubbed his thumb with his index and middle finger on both hands insinuating that he was making a lot of money. As he reflected back, he realized that he was immature and is now ready to be a professional. He seems to be doing all the right things but we’ll see how the season develops for him.

Stanley Cup Finals Tied, Warriors Need Intensity, Johnny Football Moves In With Coach

HOCKEY

In Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Chicago Blackhawks, the Blackhawks desperately needed a win on their home ice to avoid heading back to Tampa Bay down 3-1.  They were fortunate to get a late go-ahead goal from Brandon Saad in the 3rd period, and were able to hold on to that lead to secure the win.  The series is now tied and could go either way.  Chicago 2, Tampa Bay 1.

BASKETBALL

In the NBA, the Golden State Warriors are trailing 2-1 against the Cleveland Cavaliers and need to win Thursday night to avoid being down 3-1. On Wednesday, Warriors forward Draymond Green said that the Warriors need to play desperate, and play with more fight.  He said they were playing lackluster and then turn it on in the 4th quarter.  They seem to always come back, but they were trailing by 20 on Monday evening.  They need to avoid those holes, and Green thinks that if they turn up their intensity they will solve many of their problems.  And when the intensity level is up, the shots go in.

FOOTBALL

Johnny ManzielJohnny Manziel (aka Johnny Football) appears to be taking his off-season seriously.  The Cleveland Browns’ QB is  coming out of rehab, and it’s reported that Manziel has moved into the house of his high school coach, Julius Scott.  Manziel said Scott was all business and hustle.  If you didn’t practice hard, you didn’t play, regardless of your star power.  Manziel is seemingly shedding his party lifestyle for some discipline.  We shall see if it pays off.

Minnesota Wants Garnett, Dragic Doesn’t Trust Suns, Manziel Making Progress

BASKETBALL

Kevin GarnettIn the NBA, with the trade deadline, everything is going wild.  One of the most interesting items being discussed is that the Minnesota Timberwolves are making a push to land Kevin Garnett.  Garnett is clearly at the end of his career, but he had all of his glory days in Minnesota, and they would love for him to give his last ounce of energy to the city.  Minnesota has great young talent, and having a role model like Garnett could really bring the team to the next level.  They likely won’t be in the playoffs, but just having him as a leader would put them in good position next year.

Elsewhere, it appears that Goran Dragic’s relationship with the Phoenix Suns is going to end.  They have been dangling headlines out there that Dragic isn’t part of their future plans, and now Dragic has said that he “doesn’t trust the Suns anymore”.  He went on to say that it’s tough to be the point guard leader of the team, to make plays, to help the team win games, when the team wants you off the court.  Dragic definitely won’t be back in Phoenix next year, and will likely have a new uniform on by this weekend.

FOOTBALL

Johnny ManzielFinally, in the NFL, Cleveland Browns’ head coach Mike Pettine has said that he is proud of Johnny Manziel’s progress, but that the search for the starting quarterback in Cleveland is ongoing.  They might take someone in the draft or search for a free agent.  For example, Rams quarterback Sam Bradford is looking for a fresh start.  He just can’t seem to stay healthy.  Pettine says that there are too many unknowns with Manziel at this point, and he needs to look toward the future.

Braxton Miller Might Transfer To Florida State, Manziel In Trouble Again, Suh Suspension Overturned

FOOTBALL

Northwestern v Ohio StatePotentially big news out of the college football world. There is speculation that Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller might transfer to Florida State as their starting QB next year. J.T. Barrett, who is the Ohio State starter but currently sidelined due to injury, is expected to fully recover and take over the role next fall. Miller doen’t want to play back up so may jump ship. Miller has already graduated from Ohio State so could easily transfer and start playing for Florida State immediately. Nothing has been officially decided yet, but this could be interesting.

In the NFL, the Cleveland Browns’ rookie quarterback, Johnny Manziel is in trouble with the team (and fans) again. Manziel has a torn hamstring and is required to show up at the team facilities for treatment. When he did not appear Saturday morning, team security went to his house and found that he had slept in. Reports said he threw a party the night before but Manziel denied that and insisted he only had three friends visiting from Texas. At least Manziel is taking responsibility. While speaking to reporters, he said,  “It’s about actions, it’s about being accountable instead of looking like a jackass.”

As reported on Tuesday, the Detroit Lions Ndamukong Suh’s suspension will n0w be overturned and he will play on Sunday in the Lions’ playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys. Suh will pay a $70,000 fine.

Broncos Lose To Bengals, Manziel Out For Season, Pistons Waive Smith

FOOTBALL

In the NFL, it was Monday Night Football between the Denver Broncos and the Cincinnati Bengals.  The Broncos needed a win if they wanted to have a shot at home field advantage.  The Bengals needed a win if they wanted to keep their playoff hopes alive.  Plus, for what it’s worth, it was the week for fantasy football championships in most leagues, and there were many star players involved (e.g Peyton Manning,Demaryius Thomas, Julius Thomas, AJ Green, and Jeremy Hill).  The Bengals started off hot, and the Broncos didn’t look so great.  But in the second half, the Broncos came storming back.  It looked like they were going to take the game, but the Bengals gave it one last effort and got the important win.  The Broncos have to really assess things, because they do not seem Super Bowl perfect right now.  Cincinnati 37, Denver 28.

Johnny ManzielElsewhere, it looks like the Johnny Manziel rookie era in the NFL came and went.  Against the Panthers, Manziel suffered an injury, and now it is being reported that Manziel is out for the season.  The Browns were hoping to use these last few games as an audition for Johnny Manziel’s pro football career, and now they won’t get another chance to look at him.  The Browns now need to decide this off season whether they want to keep Manziel and give him a shot as their franchise QB, even though he has not looked good as a pro, or if they want to take a chance on another hot rookie or free agent.  Perhaps Jay Cutler will be available.

BASKETBALL

And in the NBA, the Detroit Pistons have decided to waive veteran forward Josh Smith.  They said that the team has not performed to their expectations throughout the first third of the season, and now they are shifting direction to focus on the younger players.  Smith is not part of that plan, even though they still owe him $26 million.  If you read between the lines, Smith is driving them crazy and they don’t want him around.  If he clears waivers in the next 48 hours, he will be very in demand as an important piece to a championship puzzle.

Mariota Wins Heisman, Bills Hurt Packers’ Destiny, Johnny Football Atrocious, Cowboys Avenge Loss

FOOTBALL

Marcus MariotaIn college football, it was time to present the Heisman Trophy.  This year, there were only 3 candidates:  Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper, Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon (who broke the all time single game rushing record before it was broken again the following week by an Oklahoma running back), and Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota (arguably the #1 pick in the NFL draft).  In the end, the award went to Mariota for leading the Ducks to the #2 seed college football playoff.  He had a great year, and NFL teams are drooling to draft him.

In the NFL, the Green Bay Packers felt like they were on a destined course for winning home field advantage in the NFL playoffs.  But to Buffalo, a team that is mathematically alive for the playoffs even though they likely won’t make it, this was a chance to show the world that they are a super tough team with a staunch defense that can beat anyone. They gave Aaron Rodgers a day he will never forget.  Interceptions, sacks, you name it.  The Bills held on for the win, and the Packers’ hopes for home field advantage took a huge hit.  Buffalo 21, Green Bay 13.

Elsewhere, everyone was looking forward to the big debut of Johnny Manziel’s first starting job in the NFL.  Expectations were high, and people were hoping to see Manziel running around out there putting on a fireworks show.  Instead, they got 4 quarters of Manziel getting sacked and throwing interceptions.  It was a true ‘Welcome To The NFL’ moment.  He was atrocious leading the Cincinnati Bengals to a shut out!  With the win, the Bengals are in good position to win a playoff birth, while the Browns’ hopes for a playoff spot may be behind them.  Cincinnati 30, Cleveland 0.

Finally, on Sunday Night, the Cowboys were looking to avenge their loss at home to the Eagles on Thanksgiving Day.  They got out to a hot start, reeling off 3 straight touchdowns, but then the Eagles came flying back, and even took the lead.  Thankfully for the Cowboys, the Eagles still were led by Mark Sanchez, who made a number of costly mistakes to put the Cowboys in multiple good scoring positions to win the game.  They cruised to a victory in the 4th quarter, but in the tough NFC, their hopes of making the playoffs are still up in the air.  They have a difficult schedule the rest of the way, and will need to play perfectly if they want to ensure their post-season birth.  Dallas 38, Philadelphia 27.

Johnny Football Grabbing Attention, Rams’ Don’t Shoot, Packers/Pats SB Preview

FOOTBALL

Johnny ManzielJohnny Football (Johnny Manziel) grabbed some attention this weekend as the Cleveland Browns’ coach benched quarterback  Brian Hoyer and put Johnny in to salvage the game against the Bills. While he couldn’t manufacture a comeback, we should expect to see a quarterback controversy in Cleveland. Bills 26, Browns 10.

Five of the Rams’ players ran on to the field in the pre-game in a “Hands up don’t shoot pose” as a form of solidarity with the protestors in Ferguson. The St. Louis police were upset with the gesture as they worked all week to keep emotions in check and provide for a safe environment for the game. The game was much less interesting than this pre-game show as the Rams embarrassed the Raiders in a blowout. Rams 52, Raiders 0.

The most anticipated and hyped game of the day between the Green Bay Packers and the New England Patriots did not disappoint. This was an offensive battle of two quarterbacks destined for the hall of fame. Green Bay’s QB Aaron Rodgers out dueled Tom Brady for a 26-21 win ending the Patriots’ 7 game winning streak. We could certainly see a rematch of these powerhouse in the Super Bowl.

Johnny Football Makes Appearance But Ravens Win, Tony Romo’s Comeback, SuperBowl Rematch Went To Overtime

FOOTBALL

In the NFL, it was a great weekend of action in a time when the NFL is under extreme scrutiny with the Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson scandals.

Speaking of Rice’s former team, the Baltimore Ravens, they took on the division rival Cleveland Browns.  Browns fans hoped to see Johnny Football on the field, and Johnny Manziel did make an appearance.  Manziel didn’t go out as a quarterback, though,  but rather on a trick play as a wide receiver.  He made a 37-yard grab, but it was called back on account of a penalty. The game was close, but a last second field goal by Justin Tucker gave the Ravens the win.  Baltimore 23, Cleveland 21.

Tony RomoThe Dallas Cowboys may have gotten off to a slow start this season, but they have quickly bounced back.  Yesterday, Tony Romo and the boys took on a Rams team that is looking for an identity.  The Rams were supposed to be the defensive juggernaut, but they give up a lot of points.  The Rams were up early, crushing the Cowboys in the first half.  But, in the 2nd half, different story, as Tony Romo and Dez Bryant went wild and helped the Cowboys get the comeback win.  Dallas 34, St. Louis 31.

Peyton ManningFinally, it was a rematch of last year’s Super Bowl between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks.  This game was marketed as a redemption game for Peyton Manning and the Broncos, but Manning publicly stated that beating the Seahawks in the regular season doesn’t make up for losing a Super Bowl.  True redemption would be if there was a Super Bowl rematch between the Broncos and Seahawks and the Broncos got the victory.  But on Sunday, it was all Seahawks for most of the game, until a last second drive by Manning tied the game up and sent it to overtime.  In OT, Russell Wilson got his act together and led the Seahawks to a victory.  Seattle 26, Denver 20.

Bradford Tears ACL, Michael Sam Sacks Manziel, South Korea Wins World Series

FOOTBALL

Sam BradfordIn the NFL, bad news for St. Louis Rams’ fans.  The Rams were expected to make the leap this year.  They have an absolutely stellar defense, and their offense looked like it was coming together under their 2nd year head coach Jeff Fisher.  Unfortunately, their quarterback, Sam Bradford, who was expected to have a banner year, tore his ACL and will be out for the season.   The Rams had high hopes for Bradford when they drafted him #1 overall, but this could likely end his tenure with the Rams.

Michael SamElsewhere in some pre-season football news, the first openly gay football player, the Rams’ Michael Sam, is having a pretty good pre-season.  The Rams took on the Browns this weekend, and one fan said that he would buy drinks if Michael Sam sacked Johnny Manziel.  And, that’s exactly what happened…twice.   Watch out for Michael Sam this year as a real threat!

BASEBALL

In the he Little League World Series, the most watched Little League World Series of all time, it came down to the Championship Game between the US champion, Chicago, and the World Champion, South Korea.  These kids had the attention of the country this year, but in the end, South Korea did just enough to stave off Chicago and capture the title.  It was an exciting event, and there will be a lot of anticipation for next year.  Perhaps this will persuade some of the top young American athletes to pursue baseball careers, as the sport has been losing athletes to other games the past few decades.

Ditka Says Redskins Name Change Stupid, Cowboys Passed On Manziel, James Harden Claims Best In NBA

FOOTBALL

Mike DitkaIn some controversial NFL news, former player and iconic Chicago Bears’ head coach Mike Ditka said publicly that the argument over the proposed Washington Redskins name change is stupid.  Ditka said that the Redskins have a storied past in the history of football and should always be the Redskins.  There is a growing swell that the Redskins should change their name, as it is deeply offensive to Indians, and Ditka definitely riled some fans by his comments.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said that during the Draft in May, there was a big debate over drafting Johnny Manziel.  Manziel was available when it came time for the Cowboys to make their pick, but they opted against it.  Jerry Jones’ son (the Cowboys CEO) said he practically had to rip the draft card from his dad’s hands because he didn’t think Manziel was the right pick.  Apparently the biggest obstacle against taking Manziel was that the Cowboys had already made a big commitment to Tony Romo.  Romo is hoping for a big year, and the Cowboys are hoping they don’t regret passing on Manziel.

BASKETBALL

James HardenFinally, in the NBA, the Houston Rockets’ James Harden aggravated some fans yesterday with his brash comments.  In an interview, Harden was asked who he thought was the best player alive.  Harden quickly responded with… himself.  Yep, he is convinced that he is the best basketball player out there.  Not LeBron, not Michael Jordan.  Funny enough, there was a short time when Harden was viewed as a bust draft pick.
