Bulls Trade Derrick Rose To Knicks, NBA Draft Thursday Night, Manziel More Trouble, No Olympics For Rory McIIroy

NBA

Derrick RoseIn more trading news, the New York Knicks traded away Robin Lopez, Jerian Grant and Jose Calderon with the Chicago Bulls to get Derrick Rose. Many are confused by the trade as Rose blew out his knee in 2012 and hasn’t been the same superstar player he once was.

Watch the NBA draft Thursday night at 7:00 pm EST on ESPN to see who goes #1. Will it be LSU’s Ben Simmons to the 76ers? And with the #2 pick, will the Los Angeles Lakers pick Brandon Ingram?

NFL

Former Cleveland Browns’ QB Johnny Manziel can’t seem to stay away from problems. According to Dallas police, Manziel reported he was involved in a hit-and-run accident this week. No one yet seems to know the full story.

OLYMPICS

The Zika virus seems to be having more of an affect. Golfer Rory Mcllroy has now decided not to travel to Brazil for the Olympics because of fears of the virus. It hasn’t been confirmed yet, but LeBron James may not go as well. Already Steph Curry, James Harden and Russell Westbrook have decided to forego Olympic Gold.

UFC Fighter McGregor Retiring, Rosenhaus Drops Manziel, Strahan To GMA

UFC

UFC fighter Conor McGregor announced on Twitter he’s retiring early. “I’ve decided to retire young. Thanks for the cheese. See ya’s later,” the unceremonious tweet read. McGregor is 27 years old and has an incredible UFC record of 7-1, having just lost his first championship fight on March 5th . He’s been MIA since making the tweet, and his spokesman couldn’t be reached. The President of the UFC announced on Tuesday that McGregor has been pulled from the main event of an upcoming UFC spectacle in Las Vegas because he was unwilling to participate in mandatory promotional preparations for the fight. “Conor did not want to come to Las Vegas and film the commercial and be a part of the marketing. He’s in Iceland training,” UFC president Dana White said. “Is Conor retiring? Only he can answer that question. I don’t know.” McGregor made history in December by knocking out Jose Aldo, one of the best MMA fighters, in just 13 seconds. Whether McGregor really intends on retiring is still totally unclear.

NFL

Former Cleveland Browns Quarterback Johnny Manziel just can’t stay out of the news. Nike announced they ended their endorsement deal with Manziel. The quarterback was recently released by the Browns for off-the-field issues, and was then dropped by his agent. There’s also a grand jury investigation in Dallas going on now to determine if Manziel assaulted his girlfriend. Sound bad? It’s not over. Manziel was just dropped by his second agent in two months and that’s with an agent, Drew Rosenhaus, who hasn’t fired a single player in 27 years. Manziel has a five-day window to seek treatment if he wants to stay with Rosenhaus. Manziel has never been apologetic about his partying ways, nor has he ever made much of anything happen on an NFL field. If he doesn’t change quickly, his career will be over, virtually before it even began.

Manziel Worn Out Welcome, Prostitution Sting In San Jose, Lady Gaga To Sing National Anthem

FOOTBALL

Johnny Manziel, AKA Johnny Football, has worn out his welcome in Cleveland. The Browns, who traded up to get Manziel in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, are reportedly cutting ties with the troubled quarterback after his most recent transgression. Police were called last weekend in Fort Worth, Texas to investigate an altercation between Manziel and an ex-girlfriend. This was not his first run-in with police. Not by a long shot. In some ways, his rap sheet is far more impressive than his stat sheet. Manziel has started in only 8 games over the last two seasons, spending most of his time playing second fiddle to the quieter, more consistent quarterback Josh McCown. Browns’ EVP of Football Operations Sashi Brown released a statement condemning Manziel’s behavior, but declined to comment further. Due to salary cap considerations, the Browns will need to wait until March to officially cut Manziel from the team.

Johnny isn’t the only one getting sent packing. Denver Bronco’s rookie safety Ryan Murphy and his brother were detained by police yesterday during a prostitution sting in San Jose. His brother was cited for solicitation, according to several sources. The Broncos have determined that these are precisely the kind of distractions they don’t need in the days leading up to Super Bowl 50. Murphy isn’t being cut from the team, but he was sent back to Denver. Strangely enough, Murphy isn’t the first NFL safety to find himself in this position. Atlanta Falcons safety Eugene Robinson was arrested for soliciting a prostitute the night before Super Bowl XXXIII in 1999. Those were different times though, as evidenced by the fact that Murphy played in the Super Bowl the next day against the Denver Broncos. He probably shouldn’t have though. He botched coverage on an 80-yard touchdown pass from John Elway. The Broncos won 34-19.

In other Super Bowl news, Lady Gaga will sing the National Anthem in Super Bowl 50!

LeSean McCoy Won’t Shake Kelly’s Hand, Manziel To Start Agst 49ers

FOOTBALL

LeSean McCoyThe Buffalo Bills play the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday and tensions will be high. Eagles’ coach, Chip Kelly, traded star running back LeSean McCoy back in March. Sunday will be the first time Kelly and McCoy will face each other since the trade. Kelly has stated that he would like to shake McCoy’s hand, but McCoy is still bitter and said “Chip can’t shake s*** at all. Nothing.” This bitterness should lend some drama to Sunday’s matchup.

In other NFL news, QB Johnny Manziel is getting another chance. After multiple off-field incidents (including partying all weekend during the Brown’s bye week), Cleveland Browns’ coach Mike Pettine will start Manziel on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. Pettine stated the repercussions would be harsh if Manziel acts inappropriately again.  “To be a starting quarterback in this league, with that comes great responsibility. The field is part of it and off the field is another part of it.”

Warriors Best Start In NBA History, Manziel Demoted, Top 4 College Teams, Awesome Donuts To Wisconsin Police

BASKETBALL

The Golden State Warriors are certainly golden as have now secured their place in history as the team with the best start to an NBA season. With their route of the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night, they posted their 16th straight win for the season eclipsing the previous record held by the 1993 Houston Rockets and the 1948 Washington Capitols. Warriors’ coach Steve Kerr has been absent from the sidelines due to complications from spinal surgery but has still been a major presence for the team. He spoke to the players prior to the game and reminded them of their four core values:  joy, mindfulness, compassion, and competition. When the players have fun, they’re exhibiting joy, when they think through plays, they are mindful, when they get along and conduct themselves properly, they are compassionate and when they get on the court to win, they are competitive.  How do you not love this team?

FOOTBALL

In the NFL, the Cleveland Browns were on a bye last week, and one would assume that their starting quarterback Johnny Manziel would take the time to rest, recover, and study the playbook.  Unfortunately that wasn’t the case, as video emerged of Johnny Manziel partying in Texas.  In the video, he was holding a bottle of champagne, appeared to be drunk, and was singing into the camera.  The Browns were not so happy with this type of behavior and proclaimed that Manziel was not fit or responsible enough to be their starter.  They relinquished Manziel of his starting quarterback duties and demoted him to 3rd string QB.  This fall from grace for Manziel might be a sign that he won’t be back in a Browns uniform next season.

The new top 4 playoff rankings were released in college football. With some upsets and unimpressive wins this past weekend, there were a few shockers.  Notre Dame and Ohio State fell out of the top 4, while Oklahoma and Iowa jumped in. At this point in the season, it’s Clemson, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Iowa rounding out the bracket.  There is still controversy, however, as Oklahoma lost to a very weak Texas team, while Iowa hasn’t played any impressive teams yet.  It’s likely that the top 4 will change again at least once before the playoffs are set.
donuts2 2Finally, in a humorous story out of Wisconsin, a fan has sent 20 dozen coconut donuts to the police that ejected him from the game on Saturday.   A fan traveled from Los Angeles to see Wisconsin play.  When he tried to enter a section that was not what his ticket indicated, he was surrounded by police and ejected from the stadium.  The fan claims he misread the ticket and the whole incident was a misunderstanding.  As a gesture of his feelings, he sent the cops 20 dozen coconut donuts. He said, “This was meant as a harmless way to show both my general gratitude for what you do (which is awesome), but slight disdain for my treatment Saturday (which was not so awesome). Donuts are awesome, but coconut donuts are not so awesome.  The Wisconsin police department had a good sense of humor and called the shipment “brilliant”.

Arrieta & Keuchel Win Cy Young, Johnny Football Starts For Browns

BASEBALL

Jake Arrieta 2The Cy Young Award went to two heavily bearded facial hair pitchers. The Chicago Cubs Jake Arrieta won the National League Cy Young Award and the Houston Astros Dallas Keuchel won the award for the American League.  The award is giving yearly to the best pitchers in the National League and American League in baseball.

Arrieta went on a late season tear that propelled his Cubs to the playoffs and Keuchel led the Astros to the playoffs for the first time since 2005. Both winners overcame difficult starts in the League but came to dominate due to hard work and perseverance. Congrats.

FOOTBALL

Johnny Manziel, aka Johnny Football, has taken over as the starting QB for the Cleveland Browns over injured Josh McCown. The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner had a rough start in his first season of the NFL with a stint in rehab but now seems to have matured and will be leading his team.

Tom Brady 2New Englands QB Tom Brady was named GQ’s Man of the Year. The magazine hits stands next week with an article about Brady being the the Greatest QB of all time.

Colts Worst Play, Manziel’s Spat With Girlfriend, Toronto Wins One, Louisville Escort Parties

FOOTBALL

In the NFL, all anyone was talking about on Monday was the atrocious special teams play the Indianapolis Colts tried to run against New England.  You have to see it for yourself:

Some are calling it the worst play in NFL history.  It seemed clear they were going to get destroyed, so why did they snap the ball?  Indy Head coach Chuck Pagano, whose job was on the line going into this game, said he stands by the play.  Not exactly the best move when both the GM and the owner want to fire you.

In other NFL news, the police released footage of Johnny Manziel’s spat with his girlfriend.  They were in such a heated argument that the police had to intervene.  Apparently there was no physical violence, but Manziel threw the girlfriend’s phone out the window.

BASEBALL

The ALCS was back in action. The Toronto Blue Jays needed a win to stay alive in this series against the Kansas City Royals.  The game was a slug fest, with both teams hitting with ease.  In the end, Toronto’s bats were just a little stronger, and they got what they needed to grab a win.  They now trail 2-1 in the series, and hope to build off this momentum.  Toronto 11, Kansas City 8.

BASKETBALL

Breaking Cardinal RulesTrending in the news is the story of sex parties at Louisville for basketball recruits. Katina Powell, who describes herself as the “Louisville escort” alleged in her recently published book, “Breaking Carinal Rules”, former director of basketball operations, Andre McGee paid her to provide escorts and strippers for players and recruits. The big question is whether or not coach Rick Pitino knew about these on-campus sex parties.

Falcons Close Win Over Eagles, 49ers Surprise Win Over Vikings, Johnny Football Shows Promise

FOOTBALL

In Monday Night Football, we got a double header.  First up, it was time for the Philadelphia Eagles to unleash their explosive offense against the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons, however, have their own explosive offense with wide receiver Julio Jones.  The Falcons struck first and owned the first half.   Finally, Chip Kelly’s offense showed up, and the Eagles came soaring back.  In the end, the Falcons got an interception and won the game. The Eagles looked solid in the 2nd half, though and you can bet they will come back strong next week.  Atlanta 26, Philadelphia 24.

Next up, it was the Minnesota Vikings v the San Francisco 49ers.  The Niners had a dreadful off-season, losing much of their defense for one reason or another (free agency, arrests, DUIs, etc.)  Everyone (including myself) was writing them off before the season even started.  Meanwhile, the Vikings seemed fully loaded and ready to roll with a healthy Adrian Peterson.  We were all wrong! The Niners looked steady and seem to have an incredible weapon with running back Carlos Hyde (from Ohio State).  The Vikings and Peterson, however, couldn’t get anything going and the Niners ran away with the win.  San Francisco 20, Minnesota 3.

Finally, even though QB Johnny Manziel played less than perfect last week against the Jets, the Browns are looking on the bright side.  Manziel came into the game after Josh McCown got hurt on a crazy attempt to run for a touchdown.  Manziel made an immediate impact with a touchdown to Travis Benjamin. Unfortunately, all went downhill from there for Manziel but the Browns still feel Manziel shows promise.  He picks up yards while running but also tends to fumble.  The Johnny Football experiment will go on, and is developing into kind of an underdog story.

Manziel Elbow Issues, Russell Wilson’s Recovery Water, Rousey’s Trash Talk

FOOTBALL

In the NFL, Johnny Manziel is having some elbow issues.  He was on pace to become the starter in Cleveland after a good performance in last week’s pre-season game, but this injury could set him back.  As a precaution, the Browns have decided to rest Manziel for the remainder of the pre-season so he can get healthy.

Screen Shot 2015-08-27 at 7.18.57 AMElsewhere in the NFL, Russell Wilson addressed a nasty hit he took in last year’s NFC Championship game against the Green Bay Packers.  Russell collided with a defender and had to come out of the game. He returned to lead the Seahawks’ comeback and said he was able to recover because of “Recovery Water”.  This is a liquid concoction of nano bubbles and massive amounts of electrolytes.  Not surprisingly, Wilson is an investor in the company.

BOXING

In the UFC world, Ronda Rousey had some excellent trash talk for Floyd Mayweather.  Floyd boasted earlier this year that he made $100 million in one night (from the Pacquiao fight) and no other athlete has been able to accomplish this payday.  Ronda Rousey, while she doesn’t get paid as much, told Mayweather that she “makes more per second”.  Rousey’s fights tend to last no longer than 30 – 60 seconds.  Pretty cool observation on her part.

Manziel Great Pre-Season Game, J.J. Watt Eating 9000 Calories, Blue Jays 11th Straight Win

FOOTBALL

Johnny ManzielIn the NFL, pre-season games are under way, and in Cleveland, all eyes are on Johnny Manziel.  Manziel’s rookie season was a disaster, which crested when he had to check into rehab (possibly for drug abuse). Manziel took the off-season seriously, and on Thursday night against the Redskins, he got a chance to show off his hard work.  The starting job belongs to veteran Josh McCown, but Manziel played great, and will give McCown a run for his money.  Manziel even ran for a touchdown, but did NOT flash his trademark “Money” sign.  Perhaps he is maturing.

100_3741 2Elsewhere in the NFL, J.J. Watt is known throughout the league as one of the greatest defensive players.  His work ethic is unmatched, which we now get to watch on HBO’s Hard Knocks.  But, since J.J. Watt is training so hard, he told his trainer that he felt he was running out of energy.  To get him the energy he needs for his rigorous two a day workouts, his trainer put him on an insane 9000 calorie a day diet which includes eating a ton of chicken wrapped in bacon.   Watt said it was actually difficult to physically eat that many calories — that he has to force feed himself.

BASEBALL

The Toronto Blue Jays, fresh off of of acquiring some solid players in free agency, just reeled off their 11th straight win Thursday night against the Oakland Athletics.  They are red hot now and Las Vegas has made them the odds on favorite to win the World Series.  Sure, anything can happen in the post-season, but they are built to win, and Toronto fans, who haven’t had much to cheer about lately, are excited about the possibility.
