UCONN #1 Seed, Broncos To Sign Case Keenum, Cousins Says Goodbye To DC, Browns’ Trades

To no one’s surprise, UConn took the number one seed (for the 5th year in a row) for the NCAA women’s tournament. The tournament begins on March 16th with the finals on April 1st in Columbus, OH.

Free agency officially begins on Wednesday and teams are scrambling to make deals. Quarterbacks Drew Brees, Case Keenum and Kirk Cousins are the hot commodities. The Denver Broncos reportedly worked out a deal to officially sign Minnesota Vikings QB Keenum, who replaced an injured Sam Bradford and helped propel the Vikings to the NFC Championship game.

All eyes are on where Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins will eventually end up (and how much he’ll make). On Monday, Cousins posted on social media, “The team has decided to move on to another option and, in turn, my family and I will be moving on as well,” He originally tagged the New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings in his post called “Farewell, Washington”.

The winless Cleveland Browns are trying to shake things up and avoid being the laughing stock of the NFL. With new general mangager, John Dorsey, the team will trade for Bills quarterback Tyron Taylor, Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry and Green Bay Packers cornerback Damarion’s Randall. And, they’re not done yet. Expect more wheeling and dealing in the next few weeks.

Titans, Falcons, Saints, Jaguars Move To Divisional Round, Mariota’s Pass To Himself, Browns’ 0-16 Parade

The Tennessee Titans, Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints and Jacksonville Jaguars survived the NFL wildcard weekend and are on to the divisional round of the playoffs.

One of the craziest plays of the weekend was watching Titans’ quarterback Marcus Mariota throw a touchdown to himself. You have to watch to believe it. Mariota appeared to be throwing the ball away when he couldn’t find an open receiver. Then the Kansas City Chiefs’ Darrelle Revis batted the ball back to Mariota who ran it in for a touchdown. Titans edged out the Chiefs to continue their season with a 22-21 win.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees battled Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton in a nail-biter of a game where both QB’s completed over 340 yards and two touchdowns a piece. Brees, who will be 39 years old on January 15th, outlasted Newton to pull out a 31-26 win. The Saints will now take on the Minnesota Vikings in the divisional round.

While fans around the league celebrated their teams advancing to the next round of the playoffs, diehard loyalists of the Cleveland Browns had a different take on the season. Tired of their team always losing, they held a parade for their “perfectly” bad season. The team was a disastrous 0-16, and fans held a parade to protest how awful the team has been over the years.

Elliott Back But Cowboys Lose, Earl Thomas Follows Cowboys To Locker Room, Browns Making History, NBA Christmas Games

The Dallas Cowboys were excited to have their star running back, Ezekiel Elliott, back on Sunday (after serving a six-game suspension for domestic violence), but it wasn’t enough for them to prepel their season to the playoffs. The Seawhaks exploited the Cowboys’ weaknesses with a 21-12 win.  Even though the game wasn’t interesting, the reporters  had a field day when after the game, the Seahawks’ safety Earl Thomas was overheard following the opposing team to their  locker room and telling the Cowboys coach,  “If y’all have a chance, come get me.” When asked why he would say that when his team is still in the playoff race, he said, I “didn’t literally mean, like, ‘Come get me now,’  I’m still in the prime of my career. I still want to be here. But when Seattle kicks me to the curb, ‘Please, Cowboys, come and get me.’ This is the only other place I’d rather be, if I get kicked to the curb.”

The Cleveland Browns are on their way to making history. With a loss against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, the Browns are now 0-15. If they lose again next weekend against the Pittsburgh Steelers, they will go down as only the second team (after the 2008 Detroit Lions) to go 0-16. The only piece of good news is the Browns now have the #1 pick in the NFL draft.

Sloane Stephens And Rafael Nadal Win Open, Ezekiel Elliott Big Game, Browns’ Infamous Stat

Sloane Stephens stunned the sports world when she took home the US Open trophy after beating fellow American Madison Keyes. After an absence of 11 months due to injury and a ranking below 800, she skyrocketed to win her first Grand Slam. After the match, she was asked if she’s motivated to win more and she light-heartedly said, “Of course, girl, did you see that check that that lady handed me? Man, if that doesn’t make you want to play tennis, I don’t know what will!”

On the men’s side, Rafael Nadal beat South African Kevin Anderson for his 16th Grand Slam Title.

The Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott received a huge welcome on Sunday after weeks of speculation about whether he’d be able to play this game or for that matter, the next 6 games. As of Friday, it looks like Elliott will continue to play for awhile as he was granted a preliminary injunction which, according to Elliott, will give him a fair trial and a chance to prove he’s innocent.  For now, the Cowboys are fortunate as Elliott helped the Cowboys overpower the NY Giants 19-3 with his 104 yards rushing

After a loss on Sunday to the Pittsburgh Steelers,  the Cleveland Browns record the infamous stat of not having won a season opener since 2004 when Jeff Garcia was the quarterback. Why is this important? According to USA Today, “teams which go 1-0 are twice as likely to reach the postseason than teams who start 0-1.”

Mayweather Remains Undefeated, 49ers Reid kneels During Anthem, Browns Stand & Rookie Kizer Starts, Isaiah Thomas Fails Physical

The most hyped boxing match in recent memory between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor lasted for 10 rounds, before the judges called the match in favor of Mayweather. After the match, McGregor claimed the scoring was biased as he thought he won the first 3 rounds. Even so, he accepted defeat and even complimented his opponent, “I enjoyed the fight, it was a great contest … It was an honor to share the ring with him.”  McGregor said in his post-fight interview. Mayweather recorded his 50th win and could retire undefeated (50-0). He earned $100 million from this fight, while McGregor earned $30 million.

San Francisco 49er safety Eric Reid previously said he would not continue to kneel during the National Anthem this season (he kneeled with Colin Kaepernick all last year), but changed his mind Sunsay night against the Minnesota Vikings. According to Reid, “I just had a change of heart. A lot of thinking, a lot of praying, talking to Colin [Kaepernick].”

Just a week after 12 players from the Cleveland Browns took a knee during the national anthem, the whole team stood Saturday night. The legendary Jim Brown reportedly spoke to the team before the game and said, “do not disrespect your country, do not disrespect the flag”.

In other Browns’ news, the team announced their rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer will start during the regular season. Kizer was selected in the second round of the draft, the 52nd overall pick (and the 4th quarterback taken). The top 3 quarterbacks in the draft appear to be starting the season on the bench.

The recently announced blockbuster trade sending Kyrie Irving to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Isaiah Thomas to the Cleveland Cavaliers may not happen. Thomas failed his physical which could cause the Cavs to void the whole deal or ask for additional compensation.

Odell Beckham Jr And Brandon Marshall Injuries, 12 Browns Take Knee

Pre-season games don’t mean much, unless someone gets injured, which unfortunately happened on Monday night. The New York Giants’ Odell Beckham Jr and Brandon Marshall both suffered what appeared to be minor injuries, but the team will access the severity when they return home.  Beckham Jr limped off the field with an ankle strain and Marshall with a shoulder injury. Many fans are upset that the Brown’s Briean Boddy-Calhoun’s hit on Beckham was dirty and he should be fined.

In other news from the Giants pre-season loss to the Cleveland Browns, 12 Browns players took a knee in prayer during the National Anthem. According to rookie Jabrill Peppers, “There’s a lot of racial and social injustices in the world that are going on right now. We just decided to take a knee and pray for the people who have been affected and just pray for the world in general.” Browns’ tight end Seth DeValve became the first white player to kneel. According to the Seahawks Michael Bennett, it would take a white player kneeling to change the conversation.  No word on whether the players will continue to take a knee during the regular season.

Ohio State Wins Historic Game, Alabama Iron Bowl Win, Brady Another Record, Browns Lose Again, Broncos Postseason In Doubt

Ohio StateOne of the greatest rivalries in college football is Ohio State and Michigan. The teams have met 113 times since 1897. All last week, the media hyped the game with articles everyday talking about Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh and his team’s tough defense and coach Urban Meyer and Ohio State’s dominating offense.  The buildup did not disappoint, as Saturday’s game will go down as an instant classic. In double overtime, the Michigan Wolverines thought they stopped Ohio State on 4th down, but the refs called a first down extending the game for the Buckeyes. As Coach Harbaugh screamed from the sidelines, Ohio State scored a touchdown on the next play and won the game 30-27.

In the 81st matchup of the Iron Bowl (the Alabama vs Auburn rivalry) Alabama performed as it has all season, by completely dominating its opponents. After a shaky first half, Alabama eased into a 30-12 win. With the win,  #1 ranked Alabama finished the regular season undefeated for the first time since 2009. In a touching moment during the Alabama Senior Day announcements before the game,  Senior Lawrence Erekosima’s mother, who is stationed in Kuwait and wasn’t supposed to be home until next year, ran on the field to surprise her son. She was allowed a leave to be with her son for this special game.

Tom Brady was uncharacteristically shaky at the beginning of the New England Patriots vs New York Jets on Sunday. After a trip to the West Coast last week, plus a knee injury that kept him out of two practices this week, his passes were a bit off. Even though Brady was vulnerable, he (characteristically) worked with his team to pull out a win. He also added another stat to his resume by tying Peyton Manning with 200 career wins. Patriots 22, Jets. 17.

Some things remained the same this week. In a loss to the New York Giants, the Cleveland Browns now have a remarkably disappointing 0-12 record. Browns 13, Giants 20.

In the late game on Sunday night, the Denver Broncos lost in a heartbreaker when their kicker missed a 62-yard field goal in overtime, setting up the Kansas City Chiefs for a 34 yard field goal which bounced off the uprights before falling in for the win. With the loss, the Broncos will have to fight in the final weeks of the regular season to make it to the postseason. Chiefs 30, Broncos 27.

Browns Lose Again, College Player Burned, Wade Standing O, Mannequin Challenge In White House

The Cleveland Browns are making history, but not in a good way. After another loss Thursday night against the Baltimore Ravens, the Browns are now 0-10, their worst start in the history of the franchise. They are also the first team since 2011 to use 3 Quarterbacks in one game. Ravens 28, Browns 7.

In an odd story out of the college ranks, Jonnu Smith a senior tight end at FIU (Florida International University) season ended after his girlfriend poured boiling water on him causing severe burns. Smith is an NFL prospect.  His girlfriend is 5 months pregnant and will be charged with aggravated battery.

Dwayne Wade got a standing ovation in his return to Miami. Wade famously joined the Chicago Bulls this summer after spending 13 seasons with the Miami Heat.  Even though Wade got a warm reception from the crowd, he said it was a weird game to play. He said, “Just a good environment though, man. The fans were great. I appreciate the ovation, the cheers. The things that they were saying, I appreciate it all. But the game itself was weird.” Wade helped his new team to a 98-95 win.

Mannequin ChallengeThe NBA Champion Cleveland Cavaliers were invited to the White House on Thursday as a congratulation on their winning season. In addition to spending time with the President, they seemed to have a blast doing the mannequin challenge with First Lady Michelle Obama.

RG3 Projected Browns’ Starter, Stoudemire Retires As Knick, Tyler Johnson Throws Up, Olympic Village Toilet Problem

Luck & RG3 2According to reports from the Cleveland Browns camp, quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3) will be the Team’s starter. RG3 sat out all of last season when he was with the Washington Redskins but his talent clearly makes him the logical starter if he can stay healthy and, according to Coach Hue Jackson”humble”. Griffin won the Heisman trophy in 2011 while at Baylor University and was chosen #2 in the 2012 NFL draft (Colts QB Andrew Luck was drafted #1). Fun fact, Griffin graduated Baylor in three years with a 3.67 GPA in political science and had started his masters degree a year before entering the draft.

Amar’e Stoudemire signed a non-guaranteed contract with the New York Knicks so he could immediately announce his retirement. At 33 years old, Amar’e could still decide to decide to play overseas in China or for Hapoel Jerusalem (a team he co-owns).

In other signing news, the Miami Heat signed 24 year old Guard Tyler Johnson to a $50 Million contract extension.  It’s good to know Johnson did not take the news lightly. According to Ira Winderman of the Sun Sentinel, Johnson said, “I threw up a couple of times when I heard the number go out there. I was in shock.”

On August 5th, the Rio Olympics will officially begin but with only 11 days to go, many athletes are refusing to move into the Olympic Village. Their complaints sound legitimate. Apparently the toilets are overflowing, the pipes are leaking and the floors are dirty. These conditions are part of a long list of Rio problems.

NFL Playoff Schedule Set: Jets Out, Manning Back, Browns Fire Coach

Week 17 in the NFL determines which teams make the playoffs and their playoff seedings. First up was the NY Jets. All the Jets needed to do to get into the playoffs was beat a lowly Buffalo Bills team.  The issue is that the Bills are coached by former long-time Jets coach Rex Ryan.  Ryan knows the Jets well and clearly wanted nothing more than to spoil the season for the team that let him go.  Ryan got his wish and the Jets are out of the playoffs.  Buffalo 22, NY Jets 17.

The Pittsburgh Steelers soundly took care of business in Cleveland to secure the playoff spot the Jets had their eyes on.  Pittsburgh 28, Cleveland 12.

The Steelers will now take on their rival, the Cincinnati Bengals. And in Cleveland, the Browns promptly fired their coach Mike Pettine after the game, and also said that they are “so done” with their QB Johnny Manziel.

The New England Patriots were hoping to secure home field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs.  All they had to do was beat a Miami team that seemingly couldn’t beat anyone.  The Dolphins finally showed up this weekend, however, and the Patriots offense stalled against them.  Miami 20, New England 10.

Peyton ManningNext up was the Denver Broncos.  If the Broncos beat the San Diego Chargers, they would secure the #1 seed in the AFC and home field advantage throughout the playoffs.  In the 2nd half of the game, the legend Peyton Manning came back on the field taking over for backup Brock Osweiler.  He looked incredible and the fans went crazy as he led the Broncos offense to a win over the Chargers.  Denver 27, San Diego 20.

In Arizona, the Cardinals were hoping to steal home field advantage away from the Carolina Panthers, but first they needed to beat their division rival, the Seattle Seahawks.  Fans expected the Cardinals to win, especially after the Seahawks struggled mightily against the Rams last week.  Seattle surprised everyone and slaughtered the mighty Cardinals. The Seawhawks had a disastrous opening to the season, but clawed their way back to a playoff spot and don’t look like they’ll be slowing down anytime soon.  Seattle 36, Arizona 6.
