Serena Is The GOAT, Federer In Running For GOAT, 49ers Hire John Lynch As GM

TENNIS

Serena Williams 2Serena Williams is the greatest of all time!!!  With her 23rd Grand Slam title after beating her sister Venus over the weekend in the Finals of the Australian Open, Serena at 35 years old, has taken tennis to a whole new level.  Rounding out a terrific weekend,  and also making a claim for the greatest of all time,  Roger Federer won his 18th career Grand Slam title (also at 35 years old) beating Rafael Nadal.

FOOTBALL

In a surprising move, the San Francisco 49ers hired former Stanford player and Hall of Fame candidate, John Lynch as their new General Manager. Lynch has been working as an NFL color commentator since his retirement from playing the game. Even though he doesn’t have any front office experience, the Niners signed him to an unprecedented 6 year contract. The Team also plans to hire Kyle Shanahan as their new head coach.

Venus/Serena Williams Final, Will Carmelo Go To Cavs?

TENNIS

Venus and Serena Williams 2It will be a Williams Sister Final in the Australian Open. Serena and Venus Williams will play each other in the final on Saturday. This will be Venus’ first grand slam final since 2009 and their ninth playing each other in a Grand Slam. Serena has the edge with 6 wins to 2. If Serena wins on Saturday she’ll regain her #1 ranking. For Venus, a win would be a testament to her hard work and perseverance in the face of adversity. Since 2011 Venus has been battling an auto-immune disease called Sjogren’s which causes fatigue and join pain.  Venus fought back and didn’t let the disease define her. As Serena stated, “After everything Venus has been through with her illness and everything, it’s a win-win situation”. Venus went on to say it best, “This is a golden time, a golden time. I couldn’t ask for anything more.” If you’re up, you can watch in real time 3:30 am ET Saturday morning.

BASKETBALL

Even though the Knicks’ Carmelo Anthony has a no-trade clause in his contract, it’s been reported the team has approached the Cleveland Cavaliers to waive the clause and trade him to for the Cavs Kevin Love. Carmelo and LeBron are friends and have communicated how much they’d like to play together. LeBron also hasn’t been shy about complaining his team needs another star player, but the Cavs aren’t letting on to what their plans are prior to the February 23rd trade deadline.

Siemian Not Rattled In Broncos’ Win Over Panthers, Brandon Marshall Kneels During Anthem, Seahawks Plan Demonstration, Serena Loses In Semis

FOOTBALL

trevor siemianThe Denver Broncos kicked off the NFL season by beating the Carolina Panthers in a close Thursday night game. Broncos’ rookie QB Trevor Siemian threw two interceptions but rallied in the second half to put together two touchdown drives giving the Broncos a slight edge over the Panthers. The Broncos’ linebacker Brandon Marshall (former teammate of Colin Kaepernick at Nevada and not to be confused with the NY Jets receiver Brandon Marshall) generated some angry tweets before the game when he was the only player on the field not standing during the National Anthem. Marshall explained he was kneeling “for social injustice”. The Broncos’ organization put out a statement saying: “While we encourage members of our organization to stand during the national anthem, we understand and respect it being a personal decision.” Marshall ended the game with 6 tackles. Denver 21, Carolina 20.

Stay tuned for Sunday’s matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and the Miami Dolphins. The Seahawks’ receiver, Doug Baldwin, has been talking about some kind of pre-game demonstration. It’s unclear exactly what they’ll be doing but sounds as if whatever they do it will be a team effort. The team recognizes Sunday’s game falls on September 11th, so hopefully they will be respectful of this date. Baldwin stated, “To express a desire to bring people together, our team will honor the country and flag in a pregame demonstration of unity,”

TENNIS

The mighty Serena Williams has fallen. Although she wasn’t making excuses, Serena appeared to be fighting a knee injury in her US Open semifinal loss to #10 seed Karolina Pliskova. With the loss, Serena loses the #1 ranking she’s held for 186 weeks.

Ohio State & USC Historical Games, Bradford & Sanchez Relocate, Police Union Upset W/Kaep, Serena Passes Federer

FOOTBALL

The College Football season is underway and we saw some exciting (and some not so surprising but history making) wins. In the history making category,  Ohio State powered over Bowling Green with a school record  776 yards. Quarterback J.T. Barrett threw for 6 touchdowns in the 77-10 win. And, USC suffered its worst loss in 120 years falling 52-6 to #1 ranked Alabama.

Sam BradfordIn NFL news, the 32 teams had to cut their rosters to 53 players over the weekend. Many players had their NFL hopes dashed while some veterans, like QB Sam Bradford, had to pick up and move to another state. Bradford was traded by the Philadelphia Eagles and sent to Minnesota to replace the injured Teddy Bridegwater.  QB Mark Sanchez (formerly of the New York Jets) also had to pack his bags. Shortly after he was cut from the Denver Broncos, he joined rookie QB Dak Prescott in Dallas.

49ers QB Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to stand during the National Anthem and then sporting socks with pigs wearing police helmets is continuing to create controversy. The Bay Area police union has threatened to boycott the 49er’s games if Kaep continues to refuses to stand during the National Anthem. The President of the Santa Clara Police Officers Association, Frank Saunders, said “I’m already hearing it this week that next week on ‘Monday Night Football,’ some officers are not going to work”. Saunders continued to say, “The 49ers are allowing this to come out from an employee and it’s making for a hostile work environment for us at the stadium,”. The 49ers organization has been relatively quiet regarding the controversy and has stated they recognize an individuals choice whether to stand or not to stand. The bright side of the controversy for the NFL is Kaepernick’s jersey sales have spiked!

TENNIS

With 308 wins, Serena Williams passed Rodger Federer for all-time career wins in Grand Slam match victories. Serena is currently in the quarterfinals round of the US Open.

Teixeira & A-Rod Retiring, Ledecky Dominates, Phelphs Triumphant Return, Williams Sisters Fall

BASEBALL

Big retirement news in baseball. Yankees First baseman Mark Teixeira will retire at the end of season. At 36 years old, Teixeira has battled multiple injuries over the last few years. He’s also in the final year of his $180 million dollar contract so he should be able to enjoy his retirement in style.

New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez also announced his retirement and said his last game will be August 12th. After that, he’ll consult for the team. A-Rod was the #1 pick by the Seattle Mariners in the 1993 draft. Seven years later he signed a 10 year $252 million dollar deal with the Texas Rangers (the largest deal ever in sports). In 2007, Rodriquez signed another record setting 10 year deal with the New York Yankees for $275 million. A-Rod’s legacy as one of baseball’s all-time home run leaders is only marred by his admission and suspension for performance enhancing drugs which kept him off the field for the 2014 season.

OLYMPICS

Katie LedeckyIn some highlights from the Olympics, swimming phenom Katie Ledecky dominated again by beating her own record (with no one even close) to grab the Gold medal in the 400-meter freestyle. Ledecky will be a freshman at Stanford this year. At 31 years old, Michael Phelps looked like his young self and helped bring the gold to his team in the men’s 4×100 relay. This is Phelps 19th Gold medal!

USA didn’t fare so well in tennis over the weekend. Powerhouse doubles partners, Serena and Venus Williams lost in the first round to a Czech team who had never won a match as doubles partners.  The Williams sisters had previously never LOST a match in the Olympics togethers.

Muhammad Ali’s Legacy, Djokovic’s Historic Win, Williams Loses In Final, Warriors’ Defense Crushes Cavs

BOXING

Muhammad AliThe most charismatic and greatest boxer of the ages, Muhammad Ali, died over the weekend at the age of 74 due to respiratory issues related to his Parkinson’s disease. Ali was a three-time heavyweight champion but transcended the world of boxing and became known for his anti-war stance and his opinions on the world.  One of his assistants captured Ali’s presence in the ring with the now famous saying, Mr. Ali would “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.”

TENNIS

By winning the French Open, Novak Djokovic accomplished what no male player has in over a decade, won all four Grand Slam titles at once. The last player to accomplish this feat was Rod Laver in 1969.

In the women’s draw, top seeded Serena  Williams lost to Garbine Muguruza. The win was Muguruza’s first Grand Slam title.

NBA

The Golden State Warriors certainly made a statement at home in game 2 of the NBA Finals. Their defense simply crushed the Cleveland Cavaliers for a decisive win. On offense, the Warriors’ Draymond Green was the star with 28 points and 5 3-pointers. The Warriors are up 2-0 in the best of seven series. Game 3 is Wednesday in Cleveland 9:00 pm EST ABC. Warriors 110, Cavaliers 77.

Warriors In Western Conf Finals, Silver Missed Curry Handshake, Raptors 3-2, Serena Williams Eats Dog Food

NBA

The Golden State Warriors are back in the Western Conference Finals with their win over a competitive Portland Trailblazers in game 5.  Steph Curry and fellow Splash brother Klay Thompson had a impressive night scoring but the talk in the sports world was NBA Commissioner Adam Silver presenting Curry with his unanimous MVP trophy. Curry went in for a handshake and Silver missed the cue, leaving Curry hanging. Curry awkwardly (but adorably) danced off the unintentional snub. After the game, Silver made up for the mistake and gave Curry a proper dap. Warriors 125, Trailblazers 121.

In other playoff news, the Toronto Raptors took a lead in the Eastern Conference Semi-finals with a game 5 win over the Miami Heat. Raptors 99, Heat 91.

TENNIS

Tennis superstar Serena Williams posted her whole eating dog foot experience on snapchat. While in Rome before a match, Williams decided to eat a spoonful of the salmon and rice dog food she ordered on her special doggie room service menu. After getting sick, she issued a warning to anyone else thinking of eating dog food…don’t!

Sherman Voices Disdain For Goodell’s Comments, Serena Williams Fires Back, Rymer Hit In Face

NFL

Richard ShermanSeattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman always lets his voice be heard loud and clear. Don’t expect that to stop any time soon. When asked about NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s comments back in February suggesting that any player who got two personal fouls be ejected from a game, Sherman didn’t hold back. “I think it’s foolish. But it sounds like something somebody who’s never played the game would say, something that they would suggest, because he doesn’t understand. He’s just a face. He’s just a suit. He’s never stepped foot on the field and understood how you can get a personal foul.” He had similar feelings on the NFL’s murky definition of what a catch is.

TENNIS

Indian Wells tournament director Raymond Moore had some disturbing things to say about women’s tennis recently. “If I was a lady player, I’d go down every night on my knees and thank God that Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal were born, because they have carried this sport. They really have.” Serena Williams, who lost in the women’s final to Victoria Azarenka, didn’t appreciate the comments. “I don’t think any women should be down on their knees thanking anybody like that.” Williams eluded to all the people who only watch Tennis for female stars such as herself and her sister. Then she brought up last year’s U.S. Open. “I’m sorry, did Roger play in that final? Or Rafa, or any man, play in that final that was sold out before the men’s final? I think not.”

MLB

The Milwaukee Brewers may have lost one of their potential players. Outfielder Rymer Liriano left Sunday’s game on a stretcher after he was hit in the face by a pitch from Los Angeles Dodgers’ Matt West. The ball hit him just under the eye. Coaches and staff rushed over to help and carted him off the field after about ten minutes. Teammates say the player’s nose was still gushing blood when he got back to the training room. Liriano remains hospitalized.

Serena Sportsperson Of Year, Patriots Blount Out, Ravens Sign Mallett, Dwight Howard Unhappy

TENNIS

Serena Williams 2Serena Williams was named the 2015 “Sportsperson of the Year” by Sports Illustrated. Williams posted, “This year was spectacular for me. For Sports Illustrated to recognize my hard work, my dedication, and my sheer determination gives me hope to continue on and do better.” At 34 years old, Williams won 53 of 56 matches and remained ranked #1 ever week. Congratulations Serena!

FOOTBALL

In the NFL, the football Gods must truly want to challenge the Patriots this year.  In the past 2 months, they’ve already lost their up-and-coming phenom running back Dion Lewis, then it was Brady’s trusted receiver Julian Edelman, and then Gronkowsky suffered an injury that will keep him from playing at 100% the rest of the season.  Now it has been reported that their starting running back LeGarrett Blount is out for the season.  The Pats are still in line to make a deep run in the playoffs, but it won’t be easy without a healthy team.
Elsewhere in the NFL, the Baltimore Ravens season is officially over, but that didn’t keep them from signing troubled quarterback Ryan Mallett.  Mallett was cut from the Houston Texans 2 months ago for failing to make a team flight.  Apparently, he was such a head case, the Texans couldn’t deal with him.  Mallett has said that he has dealt with all of his off-the-field issues, and now feels ready to win some games with the Ravens.  The Ravens desperately need Mallett, as they already lost their starter Joe Flacco for the season, as well as back-up Matt Schaub for the next few weeks.  Quarterbacking the Ravens is likely Mallett’s last chance to prove he belongs in this league.

BASKETBALL

In the NBA, surprise surprise, Dwight Howard is unhappy again.  He said that he was tired of playing second fiddle to James Harden.  The odd thing about this statement is that the reason he left Orlando for Houston is that he wanted to be surrounded by a winning team so he could get to a championship.  Howard always wants attention, however and it’s likely the Rockets will trade him, as that is bad for chemistry for the rest of the team. It’s possible Howard will be picked up by another team such as Boston or Sacramento.

Serena Completes Serena Slam, Djokovic Beats Federer For Ninth Grand Slam, Lebron Signs $23 Mill Contract

TENNIS

Serena Williams won her 21st career Grand Slam title with a win over Garbine Muguruza on Saturday at Wimbledon.  Serena completed her “Serena Slam” winning last year’s US Open and this year’s Australian Open and French Open. If she wins the US Open starting August 31st, she will have completed a true calendar Grand Slam. Only 3 other women (last one Steffi Graf in 1988)  have achieved this feat.

Novac DjokovicIn the men’s tennis final, it took 4 sets for Novac Djokovic to beat Roger Federer for his 3rd Wimbledon title and ninth Grand Slam Championship.  The Djokovic/Federer rivalry is one of the best in the sport. They are evenly split on results of their 40 matches…20 each.

BASKETBALL

It’s official, Lebron James recommitted to the Cleveland Cavaliers. According to ESPN, Lebron will make $23 million next season with a player option for 2016/17 that could be worth $24 mill. Now that the Cavs players are signed and healthy, watch out. They could be the team to be next season!
