Woods, McIIroy, Spieth, Reed Dominating News At Masters, Copeland Stabbed 4:00 am In NYC

GOLF

Tiger WoodsIt’s the PGA Masters week. Tiger Woods and Rory McIIroy have been dominating the headlines.  Tiger has been absent for a few months until his game became “tournament ready” after back surgery last year. Tiger has won an impressive 4 Masters tournaments in his career but is now just looking to make the cut. McIIroy has 4 major victories under his belt but has never won the Masters so McIIroy fans will be pulling for him to complete this Grand Slam.

In other Masters’ news, eyes will be on the younger generation and the future of the sport in Jordan Spieth (21 years old and ranked 4th in the world) and Patrick Reed (24 years old and 15 in the world).

BASKETBALL

Indiana Pacers’ forward Chris Copeland, his wife and another women were stabbed in front of a nightclub at 4:00 am Wednesday. The Pacers were in town to play the Knicks at Barclays center that evening. The motives of the alleged 22 year old stabbing suspect are still circumspect but sports fans have been discussing whether or not Copeland should have been out at a nightclub at 4;00 am the day of a game that evening.

Tragedy At Nascar’s Watkins Glen, McIlroy Wins PGA Again

NASCAR

In a horrific scene on Saturday evening, famed NASCAR driver Tony Stewart hit and killed Kevin Ward Jr as Ward was walking towards Stewart after a crash on the track. Ward got out of the car, crossed the track, pointed toward Stewart and got hit while doing so. It was dark that evening and Stewart apparently couldn’t see Ward.  There appears to be no criminal charges or criminal intent against Stewart and they are treating it like an on-track tragedy. Currently, the Sheriffs are asking for fans’ videos so they can get more information. Tony Stewart is cooperating in the investigation and even pulled out of Watkins Glen International on Sunday morning. He sent out a statement saying, “There aren’t words to describe the sadness I feel about the accident that took the life of Kevin Ward Jr.”.

GOLF

Rory McIlroyIn the PGA Championship in Valhalla, Tiger flamed out as many expected and 25 year old Rory Mcllroy took home the big trophy. He’s the first player to win three straight PGA Tour starts since Tiger Woods back in 2007.   It was an exciting finish with a head to head against Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler for most of the afternoon.

Tiger’s Bad Back, Bon Jovi Might Move Bills To Canada, Pacers’ George Injured,

GOLF

Tiger WoodsIn other injury news, Tiger Woods had to withdraw from the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational due to a nagging back injury.  Woods has been struggling with a bad back for a few years now, and it is seriously starting to affect his game.  The Tiger Woods of old would never pull out of a tournament, and one has to wonder if we are starting to see the beginning of the end of the Tiger Woods era.  Hopefully he will have one more flash of dominance, but this is not a good sign.  The young Rory Mcllroy took home the Bridgestone event trophy.

FOOTBALL

Jon Bon JoviIn the NFL, the Buffalo Bills are up for sale.  And for a long time, rock star Jon Bon Jovi has been interested in purchasing the team, along with an investment group.  Even though he’s interested in buying the Team it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s interested in keeping them in Buffalo. Bon Jovi was seen scouting out stadiums in Toronto.  Giving the Bills to Toronto, and thus giving Canada their first official NFL team, could be a financially wise move.  There has been huge outcry from Buffalo residents, however.  They are even boycotting all Bon Jovi music in restaurants and bars.  On Sunday, Bon Jovi released a statement saying that he understands how Bills fans feel.  He said that he’s not going to risk it all just to let everyone down.  This story is still developing.

BASKETBALL

Many NBA stars are currently practicing for the World Cup of basketball.  One of the stars, emerging superstar Paul George of the Indiana Pacers, landed awkwardly and broke his leg in an awfully severe injury during a routine scrimmage.  It was so gruesome that pictures of it on the internet came with a warning “not to look if sensitive”.  It was reminiscent of the nasty injury Kevin Ware of Louisville suffered roughly a year ago.  George is recovering well, and said he will be back.  But it’s hard to know if he will be the same after such a horrendous injury.

Rory Mcllroy wins Open, Wiggins May Stay a Cav, Glen Rice Jr. Wins Summer League MVP

GOLF

Rory McllroyTypically all eyes are on Tiger Woods, but we can’t forget that there is another marketable force in golf:  Rory McIlroy.  Mcllroy is newly single, good-looking, and an incredible golfer.  And this weekend, he played marvelously and won the Open Championship.  Expect to be seeing Mcllroy in many more commercials.  Winning this big tournament is a major step towards him becoming a household name in the sporting community.

BASKETBALL

Andrew WigginsIn the NBA, there is still  speculation that the Cavs overall #1 pick Andrew Wiggins may be headed to Minnesota along with last year’s #1 overall pick Anthony Bennett in exchange for T-Wolves star Kevin Love.  Yesterday it was reported, however,  that the Cavs are very close to signing Wiggins to a contract.  This doesn’t necessarily mean that Wiggins will stay in a Cavs jersey, as Cleveland can still trade his contract away, but it does make you wonder if the Cavs are planning a title run WITH Wiggins.  After all, with LeBron’s tutelage, he could develop very quickly.

Finally, in some NBA Summer League news, all the young players are trying to prove that they either deserved to be drafted or SHOULD HAVE been drafted.  These guys play hard right out of the gate, all vying to catch the coach’s eye and hopefully get some playing minutes next season.  That’s why it’s a pretty big deal who gets Summer League MVP.  And yesterday, that honor was bestowed upon the Washington Wizards’ Glen Rice Jr., son of the great Miami Heat and Charlotte Hornets 3-point shooter Glen Rice.  That’s just one more weapon for the Wizards who are trying to make a run at the title next year.

Love for Wiggins in Cleveland, Boozer to LA, Chasing Rory in Open

BASKETBALL

Andrew WigginsIn the NBA, the hot rumor of the day is that the Cleveland Cavaliers MIGHT be bringing Kevin Love to town to pair with LeBron & Kyrie:  The New Big 3.  And on Thursday it was reported that the Cavs may send the #1 overall draft pick, Andrew Wiggins, to the Minnesota Timberwolves in return.  Wiggins could be a superstar, and the Cavs may regret letting him go.  But Love is a proven star, and entering the prime of his career.  The Cavs can’t squander LeBron’s prime years waiting for Wiggins to grow up.  Plus, the T-Wolves would relish bringing in a potential superstar like Wiggins.  This trade may just happen soon.

Elsewhere in the NBA, the Chicago Bulls recently cut aging veteran Carlos Boozer.  But he wasn’t unemployed long, as the Los Angeles Lakers, thinking they have nothing to lose, took a chance on the vet.  They’re trying to assemble some type of team in LA during Kobe’s last years.  This team is in a rebuilding process, and they didn’t land any of the major free agents.  So they may as well roll out at least a watchable product to their fans.

GOLF

Rory McIlroyIt’s the open championship.  Tiger Woods has often done very well in this event, but this year, the whole pack is chasing pretty boy Rory McIlroy.   He has struggled in the past on Fridays in the Open Championship, and will have to keep his poise if he wants to keep his commanding lead.
