Biles Wins 5 Golds And Wears Teal To Acknowledge Victims, Sherman Thinks Helmet Rule Idiotic

GYMNASTICS

Simone Biles won all five Gold medals at the US Gymnastics Championship Sunday night. According to the coordinator of the women’s team, “Biles is so spectacular, it’s pretty much a given that everyone else is competing for second place when she’s around.” Biles didn’t just compete and win her events, she also made a statement by wearing a teal colored outfit. Teal is the color of sex abuse survivors, and Biles wanted to make the hundreds of gymnasts abused by Larry Nasser were acknowledged for their suffering. Meanwhile, USA Gymnastics new CEO Kerry Perry had a chance to address the media. Unfortunately, Perry didn’t use the platform to recognize the victims of sexual abuse and properly acknowledge the changes that need to be made in USA gymnastics.

FOOTBALL

Much has been said in the last couple of weeks about the NFL’s new helmet rule which attempts to make the game a safer place for the athletes. Players and fans alike have criticized the rule saying it’s too subjective and impossible to properly enforce. According to San Francisco 49er cornerback Richard Sherman, “it’s idiotic”. He went on to say, “To all those ppl including those who made the rule. I want a video of YOU running full speed and being lead by anything but your head while also attempting to bring down a moving target. You will soon realize it’s impossible.” Sherman also tweeted that if the rule stays in place, the NFL “will be flag football soon.”

Biles & Raisman Win Gold/Silver, Kerri Walsh Jennings Loses For First Time

OLYMPICS

Simone BilesThe US brought home the Gold and Silver in the floor exercises Tuesday night. As expected Simone Biles mesmerized the crowd for the Gold and teammate Aly Raisman’s exceptional routine secured the Silver. With Biles’ 5 medals (4 Golds) and Raisman’s 3 medals, and Laurie Hernandez’ Silver on the beam, USA walked away with a record nine overall gymnastics medals. The US gymnasts quickly become celebrity darlings during the games. Hernandez now has her own meme and Biles’ crush, Zac Effron, even made the journey to plant a kiss on Biles’ cheek.

Kerri Walsh Jennings, the former reigning champ of beach volleyball who had never lost a match in her Olympic career, lost Tuesday night to Brazil. Walsh Jennings had won Gold in Athens, Beijing and London with her former partner Misty May-Treanor. Walsh Jennings and new partner,  April Ross, have a shot of taking Bronze if they beat the other Brazilian team.

Ledecky’s Astounding 800 Meters, Bolt Makes History, Phelps More Golds Than Most Countries, Biles Wins Again, Hope Solo Bad Loser

OLYMPICS

Katie Ledecky set a world record with her astounding win in the 800 meter freestyle. It was no surprise to anyone who’s been watching Ledecky, she would win in this event as it’s her strongest, but her margin of victory was purely breathtaking. The best description I’ve seen is from Washington Post reporter, Dave Sheinin who wrote,”The men’s 100-meter dash final Sunday in track and field will begin and end in the time she spent waiting.” The win gives Ledecky her fourth gold of the Olympics.

Usain BoltAnd speaking of the men’s 100 meter dash, the fastest man in the World, Jamaica’s Usain Bolt made history by winning his third straight Gold. No one has ever won three consecutive Golds in this event.

Michael PhelpsWith his 23rd Gold medal over the weekend in the 4×100 meter relay, Michael Phelps cements his legacy as the greatest Olympic athlete of all time. He has now won more Olympic medals than anyone from any other country and if Phelps was his own country, he’d be tied with South Africa in 38th place for most Golds.

Simone Biles won yet another Gold (her 3rd so far) with two difficult vaults. Biles has two more individual events left, the balance beam and floor exercises, so expect some more hardware before the week is over.

In women’s soccer, the US Team was considered favorites but fell to Sweden in the quarterfinals. Losses happen in the world of sports, but the always controversial US goalie Hope Solo, made the sting of the loss much worse by complaining her opponents were cowards by playing conservatively. Solo is rightfully getting vilified on social media for acting like a sore loser.
