Beckham Jr. Highest Paid Receiver, Ginobili Retires

FOOTBALL

Odell Beckham Jr. worked out a five-year deal with the New York Giants making him the highest paid wide receiver in the NFL. According to reports, Beckham Jr. will receive $95 million over 5 years with $65 million guaranteed. The pro-bowl wide receiver hasn’t played in the pre-season but will be on the field for the season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on September 9th. Odell commented on his contract, “Honestly, I don’t even know how to explain it. I don’t know if it’s a relief, I don’t know — it’s a combination of everything. You’ve worked all your life to get to this point and it’s finally here.”

BASKETBALL

After a successful 16 season, San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili tweeted he’s retiring. At 41 years old, he wrote,”Today, with a wide range of feelings, I’m announcing my retirement from basketball. IMMENSE GRATITUDE to everyone (family, friends, teammates, coaches, staff, fans) involved in my life in the last 23 years. It’s been a fabulous journey. Way beyond my wildest dreams.” Many current and former players responded to the announcement with their own admiration for Ginobili. Steph Curry summed it up with his tweet, “You embody how basketball is meant to be played,”

Indians 21 Wins, Banner Removed In Boston, Beckham Jr In Dance-Off, Paris/LA Official Olympic Cities

BASEBALL

The Cleveland Indians continue to make history. By beating the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night, the Indians set an American League record of 21 consecutive wins. They are now tied with the 1935 Chicago Cubs.

A “Racism is as American as Baseball” banner was removed Wednesday night during Boston’s 7-3 loss to the Oakland Athletics at Fenway Park. The fans responsible for the banner claimed it was meant to be anti-racist. In their statement to CSN New England, they said, “We want to remind everyone that just as baseball is fundamental to American culture and history, so too is racism. White people need to wake up to this reality before white supremacy can truly be dismantled. We urge anyone who is interested in learning more or taking action to contact their local racial justice organization.”

FOOTBALL

NY Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr is in a bit of hot water as he was reported to have been in a “dance off” last week against Oklahoma City Thunder’s Russell Westbrook in a NYC Club. Normally that wouldn’t be a problem, but Odell didn’t play in the Giants opener because he’s suffering from an ankle injury, so dancing in a Club, then sitting on the sidelines while your team gets destroyed is not good optics.

OLYMPICS

The International Olympic Committee officially awarded the 2024 Olympics to Paris and the 2028 Games to Los Angeles. Paris and LA will join London as the only cities to host the Olympics 3-times.

Odell’s Record Shoe Contract, Gronkowski’s Music Video, LaVar Ball’s T-shirt

FOOTBALL

NY Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr signed the largest shoe contract Nike has ever offered a football player.  It’s reported he’ll make $29 million over 5 years. While this is a huge amount for football, the shoe contracts for NBA players are much higher. All-star LeBron James reportedly has a $1 billion lifetime contract with Nike.

New England Patriots Rob Gronkowski is known as one of QB Tom Brady’s favorite target on the field and a guy who seems to enjoy life to the fullest off the field. In his latest endeavor, he’s starring in  3LAU’s “On My Mind” music video.

BASKETBALL

LaVar Ball is making headlines again with his “Stay In Yo Lane” t-shirts. The shirts sell for between $50-$60. The phrase came about after his comments during an interview with Fox Sports’ Kristine Leahy.

Duke Player Receives Technical For 3rd Tripping, Mom Killed For Gloating, Odell Fined For Sager Cleats

FOOTBALL

grayson-allenDuke University basketball player Grayson Allen received a technical foul for tripping a player from Elon University. What’s so newsworthy about this incident is it’s his third time tripping an opponent.  If you watch the video it’s abundantly clear Allen tripped the player on purpose. Many are upset with Blue Devils Coach, Mike Krzyzewski for not suspending Allen for his unsportsmanlike actions.  He called the incident “unacceptable” but so far hasn’t taken any further disciplinary action.

Many are excited by the resurgence of the Dallas Cowboys this season, but in a very bizarre, sick and sad story, the exuberance went too far. On Sunday, a mom in Dallas was celebrating the Cowboys win over Tampa Bay when her stepson became upset over her “gloating” and fatally stabbed her.

New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr feels there’s a double standard in how the NFL fines players. He was assessed a $18K fine for wearing colorful cleats (later auctioned for charity) honoring legendary Craig Sager. Odell claims he wasn’t asked to take the cleats off, he just got hit with the fine without warning.

Brady Ends Suspension With Big Win, Odell’s Fun With Nets, Dak On Way To Rookie Record, Blue Jays Sweep Rangers

FOOTBALL

A few highlights from the weekend NFL games:

tom-bradyTom Brady officially ended his 4 game suspension for deflategate in a big win against the Cleveland Browns (who are now 0-5 and potentially on their 6th quarterback of the season). The team was clearly energized, and Brady did not disappoint by throwing for over 400 yards and 3 touchdowns. Tight end Rob Gronkowski said it best, “Everyone was intense today. Everyone was amped up. Tom always brings the amp-ness to the table. So we were just excited to get back out there, get back on track and get a win.” New England Patriots 33, Cleveland Browns 13.

The New York Giants lost to the Green Bay Packers, but the Giants Odell Beckham Jr seems to be putting his anger issues to rest. All week, sports fans have been talking about his inability to control himself, but on Sunday he appeared calm and happy and even had some fun (after making a beautiful touchd0wn catch) by hugging a kicking net he punched a couple of weeks ago.

Dak Prescott, QB of the Dallas Cowboys, is on his way to setting a rookie record for number of passes without an interception. He currently has 155 passes and needs 8 more to eclipse Tom Brady’s rookie record. Even though Prescott has been performing beyond expectations, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones still maintains injured QB Tony Romo will be the starting QB when he’s healthy. Cowboys RB, Ezekiel Elliott made a big contribution to the game by rushing for 100 yards in his 3rd consecutive game.  Dallas Cowboys 28, Cincinnati Bengals 14.

BASEBALL

The Toronto Blue Jays swept the Texas Rangers to advance to the American League Championship Series. The Blue Jays win marks the first series in Major League Baseball history to end with a walk off run scored via an error. This is the second straight year the Blue Jays advance to the ALCS.

Mets And Giants Wild Card Game, Odell Beckham Jr Unsportsmanlike, Vikings 4-0, Johnny Football Trademark, Super Bowl Goes GAGA

BASEBALL

With a 5-3 victory over the Phillies on Saturday, the New York Mets clinched a National League wild card playoff spot against the San Francisco Giants. Even though both teams have the same regular season record, the winner-take-all wild card game will be played at Citi Field because the Mets won the season series over the Giants. Tune in Wednesday night 8:00 pm ET.

FOOTBALL

The big news from the Monday Night Football game is the NY Giants Odell Beckham Jr’s unsportsmanlike conduct. Odell was charged with a penalty for taunting the Minnesota Vikings Cornerback Xavier Rhodes after Rhodes hit him out of bounds. Odell ended up with a paltry 23 yards for the day and has been criticized by his teammates and the media for letting his emotions get the best of him. On a more positive note, the Minnesota Vikings offense came to play. The Vikings are now 4-0 (only other 4-0 team is the Denver Broncos). What’s most surprising about the Vikings winning season so far is the performance of Sam Bradford. Bradford is a former Heisman Trophy winner who had a mediocre career with the St. Louis Rams and the Philadelphia Eagles. The Vikings are also performing without their star running back, Adrian Peterson, who is out until at least December with a torn meniscus.  Vikings 24-Giants 10.

In other football news, former Heisman QB Johnny Manziel (who was suspended from the NFL and cut by the Cleveland Browns) and his lawyers filed with the US Patent and Trademark office to protect his nickname, “Johnny Football”. Now that Manziel has been reinstated by the NFL, it’s possible some NFL team may take a chance on the troubled QB and pick him up.

Lady Gaga 3As Lady Gaga wrote on her twitter account, “This year the Super Bowl goes GAGA”, meaning after weeks of speculation, it’s official and she will play in this year’s Super Bowl halftime show.

Panthers Remain Undefeated, Odell’s Bad Behavior, Chiefs Hot, Roethlisberger Comes Through

FOOTBALL

The Carolina Panthers came into New York undefeated to take on the NY Giants. The Giants were determined to rise to the occasion and unseat the Panthers.   In the game, the Panthers were crushing the Giants, but late in the 3rd quarter, the Giants launched a 28 point comeback to tie the game with just a little over a minute remaining.  Then, Panthers QB and MVP candidate Cam Newton knew it was “Go Time”.  He marched the Panthers down the field for a game winning field goal.  The Panthers are now a perfect 14-0.  Carolina 38, NY Giants 35.

Odell Beckham Jr 2A big story from the game was Giants star wide receiver Odell Beckham’s abhorrent behavior.  He was throwing punches and cheap shots at Panthers star cornerback Josh Norman the entire game.  Beckham almost got tossed from the game and many think he should have been suspended.  After the game, Norman said, “It was ridiculous, I think it was personal. He was trying to come at me. I didn’t take nothing personal. I just went out and did my job.”
In Baltimore, the Ravens season is effectively over, but their opponent, the Kansas City Chiefs were quietly making an incredible run.  After starting the season a pathetic 1-5, the Chiefs reeled off 7 straight wins.  They are now in the playoffs, and are looking for an 8th straight victory.  To no surprise, Baltimore posed no threat, and the Chiefs beat them with ease. The Chiefs are red hot at the right time, their defense is turning into a wall, and they are going to be a team that nobody wants to face in the playoffs.  Kansas City 34, Baltimore 14.

The Pittsburgh Steelers were expected to easily defeat the Denver Broncos, who were coming off an ugly home loss to the Raiders.  The Broncos were ready, however, and came out with a big early lead.  You can never count out Big Ben Roethlisberger though and his superstar wide receiver, Antonio Brown.  They pulled off an incredible comeback, capped off by a late 23 yard touchdown pass from Big Ben to, of course, Antonio Brown.  The Steelers got the win, and are making a run at winning the division.  Pittsburgh 34, Denver 27.

Royals Win World Series, Emotional Bucs Win, Broncos D Overpowers Rogers, Hurricanes 8 Laterals

BASEBALL

In the World Series, it was Game 5 between the Kansas City Royals and the New York Mets. Johnny Cueto The Royals led 3-1 and needed to win one more to secure their first World Series title since 1985.  Last year, they fell short against the San Francisco Giants. The Mets led early in the game, but a late rally by the Royals sent the game to extra innings.  In the 12th, the Royals put up 5 runs, and the Mets found themselves in a huge hole.  In the bottom of the 12th, the Royals got the job done on the mound, and sealed their world series victory. The Royals celebrated their first World Series victory in 30 years.  Kansas City 7, NY Mets. 2

FOOTBALL

In the NFL, it seemed as if  the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were doomed coming into the Georgia Dome to play the Atlanta Falcons.  The Bucs had perseverance, however, especially  their rookie linebacker Kwon Alexander.  Alexander’s brother was killed in a fight this past week, and Alexander said that all his brother wanted was to “see Kwon ball”.  And Kwon did just that.  He had several incredible defensive plays, including stripping  the ball from Falcons star receiver Julio Jones.  The Falcons forced an overtime, but the Bucs never quit, and nabbed the upset overtime win.  Alexander got the game ball and gave an emotionally tearful victory speech.  Tampa Bay 23, Atlanta 20.

In New Orleans, we were treated to a shootout between the Saints and the New York Giants.  This was a homecoming game for two Giants’ stars, as both their QB Eli Manning and their wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. are Louisiana natives.   Manning and Odell they came to play!  But… so did Drew Brees.  Brees threw for a record-tying 7 TOUCHDOWNS!!!  Meanwhile, Manning was right behind him with 6 TOUCHDOWNS!!!   It looked like the Giants were headed for the win, but some late penalties put the Saints in field goal range, and Kai Forbath booted the game winner.  The Saints celebrate on their home turf.  New Orleans 52, NY Giants 49.

Finally, at night, it was the battle of two 6-0 teams.  The Green Bay Packers headed to Denver to take on Peyton Manning and the ferocious defense of the Broncos.  Shockingly, the Broncos were even able to shut down Aaron Rodgers, one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.  The Broncos now move to 7-0, and, it looks like Manning might get another shot at a Super Bowl run — and this year he won’t have to do it all by himself.  Denver 29, Green Bay 10.

In college football this weekend, we witnessed one of the craziest plays. The University of Miami was trailing Duke and the game appeared to be over. In the ensuing kickoff return, the Hurricanes lateraled 8 times to score the winning TD. It’s a fun play to watch and would have gone down as one of the greatest plays in college history, but turns out the University of Miami player’s knee was down in addition to a few more errors that were overlooked by the refs. The Atlantic Coast Conference suspended the officiating crew after the game but the results still stand and the University of Miami recorded the win.

Giants Pull Out Thursday Night Win, Thompson Closer To Deal With Cavs, Metta World Peace A Laker

FOOTBALL

Eli ManningIn Thursday Night Football, it was the battle of two lowly teams:  The Washington Redskins and the New York Giants.  The Redskins are actually coming off of a win, while the Giants have suffered two last second losses.  The Giants needed a victory if they didn’t want their season to completely go down in flames.  The game was ugly but the Giants were doing slightly better than the Redskins.  The Redskins even fumbled on the goal line instead of scoring a touchdown.  In the end, the Giants squeaked by thanks to a decent performance by Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr.  Don’t count the Giants out just yet — they are starting to look better.  NY Giants 32, Washington 21.

BASKETBALL

In the NBA, the Cleveland Cavaliers still haven’t finalized a deal with their impressive young power forward, Tristan Thompson.  The Cavs and Thompson were quite far apart on their negotiations, but on Thursday, Thompson reduced his ask from a max contract down to $53 million over 3 years.  Thompson is integral for the Cavs and with him on the court, they could be the clear favorite to win the title.   But that’s a big IF.  They are paying way over the payroll tax, but they think he’s worth the money.

Metta World PeaceFinally, in the NBA, just when you thought Metta World Peace (formerly Ron Artest Jr before he legally changed his name in 2011) was finished in the NBA, he gets another shot.  The Lakers are bringing him back on a one-year deal.  They think he still has gas in the tank, and and a figurehead for the young team.  Last year, the Lakers had young players running around, but this coming season, Kobe will be back, and now with Metta on the court, the team should have a different feel.  A seemingly good move for the Lakers.

Odell Beckham’s Greatest Catch In History, T.Y. Hilton TD For Baby Girl, RGIII Tough Day, Katy Perry Headline SuperBowl

FOOTBALL

Odell Beckham JrIf you were watching the Giants/Cowboys game Sunday, you witnessed arguably the greatest catch in the history of the game. This one-handed catch by Odell Beckham Jr was truly spectacular. If you didn’t see it live, watch here! Unfortunately the Giants couldn’t get the win but Beckham certainly made a case for rookie of the year. Cowboys 31, Giants 28.

In a touching moment, Indianapolis Colts’ WR, T.Y Hilton scored a touchdown in a promise to his newborn daughter. Hilton was at his daughter’s birth Sunday morning but wanted to get to the game so he could score a TD in her honor. In the third quarter, Hilton caught a 73 yard TD from Andrew Luck. In the endzone, Hilton cradled the football like a newborn and then in interviews after the game, he teared up talking about his baby girl.

Rough day for Washington Redskins’ QB Robert Griffin III (RGIII) against the San Francisco 49ers. Pre-game reports suggested that Redskins’ coach, Jon Gruden would pull RGIII if he didn’t perform. Griffin sustained 5 sacks during the game and only completed 11 of 19 passes for 106 yards. It will be surprising seeing RGIII in the starting job next week.  The game was sloppy but the 49ers pulled off the win. 49ers 17, Redskins 13

Katy PerryIn other football news, the NFL announced Katy Perry will headline the SuperBowl February 1st in Phoenix, AZ. The NFL continues to cater to the younger generation so expect a dynamic and exciting show.
