HOCKEY

In the Eastern Conference finals for Hockey, the Washington Capitals are on fire. With another big win over the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Capitals are up 2-0 in the series. If they grab two more wins, they’ll head to the Stanley Cup Finals. Not bad for a team who hasn’t gone this far in 13 seasons.

In the Western Conference finals, the Winnipeg Jets are up 1-0 over the Las Vegas Golden Nights with game 2 Monday night at 8:00 pm ET.

On Friday night the Cleveland Cavaliers snapped the Golden State Warriors 15 win playoff streak and staved off elimination. The best of seven series is now 3-1 with game 5 back in Oakland Monday night, 9:00 pm ET

Horse Racing

The first four finishers of the Belmont Stakes all ran in the Kentucky Derby, but skipped the second leg of the Triple Crown (the Preaknes) then came back for a strong showing in the Belmont on Saturday. Tapwrit (who finished 6th in the Derby) edged out Irish War Cry to win the 1 1/2 mile race.

TENNIS

Rafael Nadal made history on Sunday by winning the French Open and his 10th Grand Slam Title. The significance of the occasion was not lost on Nadal. NBA Finals Tonight, LeBron Racist Incident, Penguins Up 2-0, Nike’s Ridiculous Lawsuit

BASKETBALL

The NBA Finals start tonight and, not surprisingly, the Golden State Warriors face the Cleveland Cavaliers for the 3rd straight year. Golden State won two years ago and Cleveland claimed last year’s title. Shockingly, LeBron James will be playing in his 7th straight NBA Finals (4 with the Miami Heat (winning 2) then 3 with the Cavs (winning 1). For the complete best of 7 NBA Finals schedule, click here.

While LeBron is busy preparing for one of the biggest games of his life, he had to respond to a racist incident. According to the police department, someone spray painted the N-word on LeBron James’ home in Brentwood, Los Angeles Wednesday morning. LeBron wasn’t there at the time as he’s in SF preparing for the Finals, but police are looking into video footage to see if they can catch the perpetrators of this hideous crime. In an interview during media day, LeBron told the media, “No matter how much money you have, how famous you are, how much people admire you, being black in America is tough.”

HOCKEY

The Pittsburgh Penguins scored three goals in three minutes in the third period to take a 2-0 lead over the Nashville Predators in the second game of the best of seven Stanley Cup Finals. Penguins 4, Predators 1.

OTHER

Nike’s tag line, “Just do it” is iconic and has inspired many athletes and non-athletes alike. But in a ridiculous turn of events, a Russian hypnotherapist, Marina Rybnikova, is suing the company for an ad inspiring women to be all that they can be. She reportedly believes“Women need to be beautiful, not made of ‘bruises and punches.” This woman is seeking $9300 for causing “moral harm”. OY!!!

Canada Defeats Team Europe, A.J. Green Dominates in TNF, Gordon Enters Rehab, Saban Criticizes Quitting

HOCKEY

Canada defeated Team Europe to win the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.  Canada swept Team Europe in the best of three final, and by doing so, recorded their 16th straight win.

FOOTBALL

a-j-greenReceiver A.J. Green had a disappointing game last weekend against the Denver Broncos when he dropped a late game pass. He told the media he needed to refocus for Thursday Night Football. Boy did he refocus!  Thanks to Green’s dominance, the Cincinnati Bengals leaped over the Miami Dolphins for a 22-7 win.

In more NFL news, Cleveland Browns receiver Josh Gordon (who was scheduled to rejoin his team in a few days) admitted himself to a rehab facility to try and get his life in order. Gordon was suspended for the 2015 season (and the first four games of this season) for substance abuse. Gordon was scheduled to return for the October 9th game against the New England Patriots. “This is the right decision for me,” Gordon said, “and one that I hope will enable me to gain full control of my life and continue on a path to reach my full potential as a person.”

In college football, Alabama coach Nick Saban did not mince words expressing his disappointment in backup QB Blake Barnett transferring to a junior college in order to be eligible to play for another school next year.  Saban said, “There’s certain pride people have in competition. There’s certain things I was taught growing up about not quitting and seeing things through. I think if I’d come home and told my dad that I was going to quit the team, I think he’d have kicked me out of the house. I don’t think I’d have had a place to stay.” Some have criticized Saban for his comments because, after only 2 years with the Miami Dolphins, he left to become head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Game 5 NBA Finals Monday Night W/O Draymond Green, Penguins Win Stanley Cup, Creator Wins Belmont Stakes

Big weekend in sports!

NBA

The Golden State Warriors stole a game 4 in Cleveland on Friday night to lead the best of seven series 3-1. Game 5 is back in California Monday night. If the Cavaliers lose, the series is over and the Warriors will have won back to back NBA Championships. Unfortunately for the Warriors,  one of their best players, Draymond Green is suspended for Monday night’s game for a flagrant foul he committed during the last few minutes of game 4. The foul against LeBron James was called a, “retaliatory swipe of his hand to the groin”.  According to the NBA, Draymond wouldn’t have been suspended for game 5 just for this foul alone but with the number of flagrant fouls his committed through the postseason, this penalty was appropriate.  Many in the sports world think the penalty is excessive and could affect the rest of the series. Must watch game, Monday 9:00 pm EST ABC.

NHL

Sidney CrosbyWith a win over the San Jose Sharks, the Pittsburgh Penguins took home the Stanley Cup for the 4th time in franchise history. The Penguins beat the Sharks 4-2 in the best of seven Finals. The Penguins’ Captain Sidney Crosby took home the MVP honors, the Conn Smythe trophy, and according to his coaches and teammates, there was no one more deserving.

HORSE RACING

In the 3rd leg of the Triple Crown series, the Belmont Stakes, Creator won by a photo finish, just edging out Destin. Creator finished 13th in the Kentucky Derby and didn’t even compete in the Preakness. The Preakness winner, Exaggerator, went off as the favorite but only finished in 11th place. There was considerably less hype for the Belmont Stakes this year as there wasn’t a Triple Crown Contender like American Pharoah who caught the racing world by storm when he won all three races last year.

Sharks Out Skate Penguins Game 5, Euro 2016, NBA Finals Game 4

NHL

The San Jose Sharks out skated the Pittsburgh Penguins in Pittsburgh to force the series back to San Jose for game 6 Sunday night of the Stanley Cup Finals. The Penguins lead the series 3-2. The Sharks goalie, Martin Jones, made a remarkable 44 saves, the most of any finals regulation game. Sharks 4, Penguins 2.

SOCCER

Screen Shot 2016-06-10 at 8.47.45 AMThe Euro 2016 tournament kicks off this weekend. The European Championship takes place every 4 years so it’s a big deal. Plus, France is hosting the tournament and with the terror attacks in Paris last November, security will be tight. They are expecting over 100,000 security officials working the tournament.  Super Victor is the official mascot of the tournament, but unfortunately for event organizers, the name (which was chosen in a poll) is the same name as a sex aid.

NBA

The NBA Finals’ Game 4 is Friday night in Cleveland. 9:00 pm EST. The Golden State Warriors lead the best of seven series 2-1.

Penguins Game 4 Win Over Sharks, Curry Resting Over Olympics, Drake Stops By Ayesha’s Restaurant

NHL

The Pittsburgh Penguins are now one win away from winning the Stanley Cup Title. In a decisive game 4 win over the San Jose Sharks on Monday night, the Penguins head home for game 5 (and the chance of securing a Championship) Thursday night 8:00 pm ET. Pittsburgh 3, San Jose 1.

NBA

Steph Curry announced he will skip the Rio Olympics. He stated he needs to rest his knee which he injured in their playoff matchup against the Houston Rockets. Curry has never competed in the Olympics but he has won two FIBA World Cup gold medals with Team USA.

Screen Shot 2016-06-07 at 8.16.04 AMIn more Curry news, Ayesha Curry (Steph’s wife) opened up a pop up bbq restaurant in San Francisco called International Smoke (open through the end of the summer). Ayesha is scheduled to have her own show on Food Network. Toronto fan, Drake, showed up to support the Curry’s (even though Curry and the Warriors beat his beloved Raptors).

Warriors Heading To NBA Finals, Kevin Durant’s Future, Penguins Win Game 1 Stanley Cup Finals

NBA

WarriorsThe Golden State Warriors continued their incredible season and beat the OKC Thunder to win the Western Conference Finals. The Warriors pulled off what many thought was impossible to come back from a 1-3 series deficit to win the best of 7 game series. They are only the 10th team in playoff history to accomplish this feat. Steph Curry contributed 36 points (and 7 3’s) while his splash brother Klay Thompson added 21 points. The Finals will be a rematch of last year when the Warriors took 6 games to beat the Cavs. The Finals begin Thursday June 2nd at 9:00 pm EST (ABC). Warriors 96, Thunder 88.

The big question on everyone’s mind now that the Thunder’s season is over is whether unrestricted free agent, Kevin Durant, will stay with the team. Durant has spent his entire 9 years with the Thunder and if he stays, he could potentially sign a 5-year contract worth up to $149 million.

NHL

In a fast-paced exciting game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals, the Pittsburgh Penguins came out on top with a 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks.

Warriors Pull Out Game 5 Win, Curry Example In Spelling Bee, Penguins/Sharks In Stanley Cup Final

NBA

The Golden State Warriors pulled out a game 5 win at home to pull the series with the Oklahoma City Thunder to 2-3. As satisfying as the win was for the Warriors now they head back to OKC for game 6 and home court advantage for the Thunder. Curry had 31 points with Klay Thompson putting up 27. Game 6 is Saturday night at 9:00 pm. Golden State 120, Thunder 111.

Steph CurrySteph Curry certainly transcends sports. His name was even used as an example during the Scripts National Spelling Bee to describe “giallolino” which according to Merriam-Webster means “any of various yellow pigments.”

NHL

The Pittsburgh Penguins came back from a 3-2 series deficit to beat the Tampa Bay Lightening and reach the Stanley Cup Finals. They will face the Western Conference Champs, the San Jose Sharks, on Monday night in the game 1 of the Stanley Cup.

Yankees And Rangers Clinch Playoff Berths, Questionable Calls In Ravens TNF Win

BASEBALL

Yankee StadiumThe New York Yankees clinched a playoff spot with a win over the Red Sox Thursday night. The Yankees are the first American League franchise to clock 10,000 wins. In more playoff news, for the first time since 2012, the Texas Rangers will also appear in the postseason.

FOOTBALL

The Baltimore Ravens came from a 13 point deficit to defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers on a field goal in overtime. QB Michael Vick subbed for the injured Ben Roethlisberger and played well but coach Mike Tomlin had some questionable calls during OT that has had fans scratching their heads. Not only did Tomlin opt against field goal attempts and go for it on 4th down (both failures but understandable as Josh Scobee had already missed 2 field goals during the game) but he also failed to get the ball to their best player LeVeon Bell. Ravens 23, Steelers 20.
