LeSean McCoy Won’t Shake Kelly’s Hand, Manziel To Start Agst 49ers

FOOTBALL

LeSean McCoyThe Buffalo Bills play the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday and tensions will be high. Eagles’ coach, Chip Kelly, traded star running back LeSean McCoy back in March. Sunday will be the first time Kelly and McCoy will face each other since the trade. Kelly has stated that he would like to shake McCoy’s hand, but McCoy is still bitter and said “Chip can’t shake s*** at all. Nothing.” This bitterness should lend some drama to Sunday’s matchup.

In other NFL news, QB Johnny Manziel is getting another chance. After multiple off-field incidents (including partying all weekend during the Brown’s bye week), Cleveland Browns’ coach Mike Pettine will start Manziel on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. Pettine stated the repercussions would be harsh if Manziel acts inappropriately again.  “To be a starting quarterback in this league, with that comes great responsibility. The field is part of it and off the field is another part of it.”

Andre Johnson New Home With Colts, Ryan Fitzpatrick A Jet, Greatest Fight May 2nd

FOOTBALL

In the NFL, the free agent extravaganza continues:

Andre JohnsonLong-time superstar Houston Texans’ receiver Andre Johnson found a new home:  He will now catch passes from the Indianapolis Colt’s QB Andrew Luck.  Johnson is at the tail end of his career, but he hasn’t had a good quarterback throwing to him, well, ever.  It will be amazing to see how these two connect next season.

And in Philadelphia, Eagles’ head coach Chip Kelly came out publicly and said that they wouldn’t be moving up to draft the highly touted Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota.  Kelly said the team wouldn’t mortgage their future (meaning trade a lot of draft picks) for just one player.  The Eagles did add depth, however, to their running game, signing former Chargers’ running back Ryan Matthews.  Matthews never really worked out out as the Chargers anticipated, but in Chip Kelly’s system, he could do some damage.  On top of this, it was reported that Cowboys’ running back DeMarco Murray has reached out to Chip Kelly as well.

In New York, the Jets added veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.  Fitzpatrick is the poster boy for “We might need this guy in case our young project quarterback doesn’t work out”.  Right now, the Jets have Geno Smith, but if he makes a mistake, you can bet Fitzpatrick will be under center in no time.  Elsewhere in New York, the Giants signed former Patriots’ running back Shane Vereen.  Vereen was a great player in New England, but that backfield is too crowded and they no longer needed his services.

BOXING

May 2nd is the most anticipated fight in a long time.  Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao.  Two fighters who had storied careers and will finally put their legacies on the line.  And on Wednesday, they had their press conference, and it was like watching two master promoters go at it.  They’re not just great boxers, they’re also geniuses in how to hype a fight.  Reserve a seat at your favorite bar for this one — it’s going to be fun to watch.

Bennett And The Bears Beat Jets, Eagles Sick Of Kelly’s Practices, Base Hit After Farm System

FOOTBALL

Geno SmithIn the NFL, it was Monday Night Football between the Chicago Bears and the New York Jets.  The Jets are off to a rocky start, and the actual, recognized nickname of their quarterback Geno Smith is “The Turnover Machine”.  That’s not a good thing.  The Bears, however, look rather solid this season, and an overlooked hero on their team is tight end Martellus Bennett.  Bennett said he felt “disrespected” by Jets coach Rex Ryan when Ryan talked about how awesome the Bears receivers were, but just mentioned Bennett as “some big dude”.  Well Bennett put on a show last night, hauling in two touchdown passes in a Bears victory.  Chicago 27, NY Jets 19.

Elsewhere in the NFL, the Philadelphia Eagles are 3-0 under second year coach Chip Kelly, but that doesn’t mean his players like playing for him.  Kelly is known for being highly disciplined with his players, and now they are starting to speak out.  Cornerback Cary Williams told the media that he was sick of all the intense conditioning practices.  Williams said he tries to conserve as much energy as possible before the games on Sundays, but Kelly’s practices are like “dog fights”.  He went on to discuss how the organization needs to start taking care of its players more.  This has been a controversy in the league the last few years, and it will be intriguing to see how the NFL deals with this situation.

BASEBALL

Finally, in baseball, a feel good story.  Stars can be created in the major league farm system,  but nobody talks about the players that spend years there just hoping to get called up for an at bat.  After 13 years in the minors, the Texas Rangers called up Guilder Rodriguez to get a major league at bat.  Rodriguez had his parents in attendance, and the whole crowd cheered him on.  On his first at bat, Rodriguez knocked a shot right over the 3rd baseman’s head for a base hit.  What a great feeling for him to finally realize his dream of hitting a major league base hit.  Texas 4, Houston 3.
