Elliott Admits Drug Use, Luck Activated, UCLA’s Greatest Comeback, USC’s Olson’s Dream Come True

FOOTBALL

In Dallas Cowboys’ Ezekiel Elliott’s domestic abuse hearing, he admitted to using drugs while at Ohio State. Elliott is appealing his 6 game suspension for domestic abuse of his former girlfriend. No word yet on whether he’ll start the season.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck has been activated from the physically unable to perform list (PUP) but will still miss at least the first game of the season if not a few weeks more. At $140 million dollars, the Colts are anxious for their franchise quarterback to get back on the field.

On Sunday night in College football, UCLA mounted one of the greatest comebacks in college football history with a 45-44 victory after being down 34 points in the third quarter to Texas A&M. Quarterback Josh Rosen led the Bruins to an epic comeback with 292 yards and four touchdowns all in the fourth quarter.

In a heartwarming moment in college football history, USC’s Jake Olson, a blind long snapper entered the game against Western Michigan in the 4th quarter to snap the ball for an extra point.  Olson lost his left eye when he was 10 months old due to a form of eye cancer. When he was 12 years old, he learned he would need surgery to remove his right eye. Olson grew up a big USC football fan and playing in a game was a dream come true. USC’s coach spoke with Western Michigan’s coach prior to the game and agreed if Olson came in (which would happen if the game was out of reach for either team), the team wouldn’t rush him. He said to the players, “I told them the entire situation and said, ‘You can’t touch him, you can’t yell at him, everybody get down so it looks like a football play but nobody move. I told them, ‘What we’re about to do is bigger than the game. This is about what kind of people we want to be, what we represent; this is bigger than us.’”

Lonzo Claims He Can Beat Jordan One On One, Luck’s Shoulder Surgery

BASKETBALL

Now that the NBA Finals are over, basketball fans are focusing on the upcoming NBA draft. And, of course, you can’t think of the draft without hearing about Lonzo Ball (and his controversial dad, LaVar). The Balls have been in the news the last few months (crazy statements about how great LaVar was and how unstoppable his sons are, the outrageous $495 dollar Baller shoes etc, etc). Recently LaVar and Lonzo were on Jimmy Kimmel stating they could both beat the LEGENDARY Michael Jordon one on one. Lonzo is hoping to become a Los Angeles Laker on June 22nd when the draft officially begins.

FOOTBALL

Indianapolis Colts fans are anxiously waiting to see when QB Andrew Luck will be ready to play. Luck had much needed shoulder surgery in January and is still unsure when he’ll be back on the field. He missed the first mandatory mini-camp, and said there’s no timetable yet for his return.

Klay Thompson’s 60 Points In 29 Minutes, Westbrook’s 6th Straight Triple-Double, Luck Dominates MNF, Heisman Candidates Announced

BASKETBALL

klay-thompson-2Klay Thompson was on fire Monday night against the Indiana Pacers. Klay scored 40 points in just the first half, then scored 20 more in the 3rd quarter. At 60 points in 3 quarters and only 29 minutes of play, who knew how many points he would have scored if he stayed in the game. Steph Curry went crazy on the sidelines cheering his teammate on. After the game he said, “That’s a feat that I’d put money on to probably never be touched ever again in the history of basketball. It’s unbelievable.” Warriors 142, Pacers 106.

Oklahoma City Thunder’s Russell Westbrook continues to shine with his sixth straight triple-double in a win over the Atlanta Hawks Monday night. Wilt Chamberlain still holds the record for 9 straight triple-doubles back in 1967. Thunder 102, Hawks 99.

FOOTBALL

Even a die-hard football fan probably turned off the Indianapolis Colts vs New York Jets on Monday Night Football. With QB Andrew Luck’s 4 touchdowns carrying his team to a devastating 41-10 win over the Jets, the Colts are now in a first place tie in the AFC South.

The ceremony for the most prestigious award in college football, the Heisman trophy, will take place Saturday December 10th. The five finalists, announced Monday night, will travel to New York City to attend the ceremony. Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson is considered the favorite, but Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield and WR Dede Westbrook, Michigan linebacker Jabril Peppers, Clemson QB Deshaun Watson are all in the running.

Rams Win At Home, Norman Takes Drug Test, Broncos D, Pats 3rd QB

FOOTBALL

Some highlights of the weekend football games:

ceelo-greenIt was a shockingly low scoring game, but the Los Angeles Rams’ defense helped the home crowd rejoice in a win against the once dominant QB Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks. The Rams hadn’t played a regular season game in the LA Coliseum since 1979. Remember, the Los Angeles Rams were the St. Louis Rams, so playing for their new hometown fans in the LA Coliseum and winning, is a big deal. In traditional LA style, fans listened to a performance by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and CeeLo Green singing the National Anthem.  Rams 9, Seahawks 3.

To make a bad day even worse, Washington Redskins’ Cornerback Josh Norman had to take drug test after a loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The NFL conducts random drug tests throughout the season. Cowboys 27, Redskins 23.

Last year’s Super Bowl MVP, the Broncos’ Von Miller, is making his mark on the season and neutralized Indianapolis QB Andrew Luck in a 34-20 win.

The New England Patriots’ QB Tom Brady is staying football ready (according to his wife supermodel Gisele Bundchen) but is still out for 2 more games (remember deflategate). We just started to get to know his backup Jimmy Garoppolo (who has performed well in the spotlight and had even threw for 3 touchdowns against the Miami Dolphins in the first half),went down with an injury late in the second quarter. Jacoby Brisett, a rookie who was a third round pick out of NC State, was thrown into the fire but kept his cool and helped the team pull out the win. It remains unclear who will be the starting QB for the remainder of Brady’s suspension. Patriots 31, Dolphins 24.

CMU’s Hail Mary, Lions Pull Win, Wentz Debut, Raiders’ 2 Points, Ray Rice, Wawrinka Wins Open

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

The most talked about college football game over the weekend was Central Michigan’s unbelievable Hail Mary throw then lateral with no time left on the clock to beat Oklahoma State. That play in itself would have caused fans to talk, but what was even more remarkable was the game should have ended before that play even began. The officiating crew called an intentional grounding penalty on Oklahoma State as time expired, but they misinterpreted the rules and let CMU have one last play (in which they scored a TD). The officiating crew was suspended for two games for making this egregious mistake which could cost #22 ranked Oklahoma State a potential playoff appearance.

NFL

Some highlights from around the NFL this weekend!

Andrew LuckIndianapolis Colts’ QB Andrew Luck was a bit hesitant in his debut (after injuries in 2015) but came back to form with 385 yards and 4 touchdowns. Unfortunately for the Colts it wasn’t enough to top the Detroit Lions. The Lions pulled out a 39-35 win.

carson-wentzThe hype is already starting after rookie QB Carson Wentz’s debut on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. Wentz threw for 2 touchdowns and completed 22 of 37 throws for 278 yards. With his confidence and poise, many believe he could bring new life into the Eagles franchise. Eagles 29, Browns 10.

The Oakland Raiders made the bold move of the day with a decision to go for  a two point conversion instead of just an extra point attempt (which would have tied the game) against the New Orleans Saints. Raiders’ Coach Jack Del Rio said, “I was thinking that we’re here to win; let’s win it right now.” And they did with a 35-34 victory in the Super Dome. The game winning two point catch by former San Francisco 49er, Michael Crabtree, was extra meaningful. Three years ago during SB when the SF 49ers were playing the Baltimore Ravins in the Super Dome, Crabtree failed to catch a few attempts at a game winning TD in the endzone. If he had caught any of these passes, the 49ers would have won the big game. Crabtree admitted he had a difficult time thinking about playing in the superdome again, but as he stated, “this time, the last play ended good.

Finally, there is a possibility former running back, Ray Rice, could be back in the League sometime soon. In case you don’t remember, Rice was suspended from football after a video was released where he pushed his former fiancee out of an elevator. Rice became the poster boy of domestic violence and has since tried to reform his image. If he does get another chance to play, he has stated he would donate his entire 2016 salary to charity.

TENNIS

The US Open came to an exciting close when defending champion, Novak Djokovic lost to Stan Wawrinka. At 31 years old, Wawrinka is the oldest male to win the US Open since the 1970’s. It was Wawrinka’s 3rd Grand Slam title.

RG3 Projected Browns’ Starter, Stoudemire Retires As Knick, Tyler Johnson Throws Up, Olympic Village Toilet Problem

NFL

Luck & RG3 2According to reports from the Cleveland Browns camp, quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3) will be the Team’s starter. RG3 sat out all of last season when he was with the Washington Redskins but his talent clearly makes him the logical starter if he can stay healthy and, according to Coach Hue Jackson”humble”. Griffin won the Heisman trophy in 2011 while at Baylor University and was chosen #2 in the 2012 NFL draft (Colts QB Andrew Luck was drafted #1). Fun fact, Griffin graduated Baylor in three years with a 3.67 GPA in political science and had started his masters degree a year before entering the draft.

NBA

Amar’e Stoudemire signed a non-guaranteed contract with the New York Knicks so he could immediately announce his retirement. At 33 years old, Amar’e could still decide to decide to play overseas in China or for Hapoel Jerusalem (a team he co-owns).

In other signing news, the Miami Heat signed 24 year old Guard Tyler Johnson to a $50 Million contract extension.  It’s good to know Johnson did not take the news lightly. According to Ira Winderman of the Sun Sentinel, Johnson said, “I threw up a couple of times when I heard the number go out there. I was in shock.”

OLYMPICS

On August 5th, the Rio Olympics will officially begin but with only 11 days to go, many athletes are refusing to move into the Olympic Village. Their complaints sound legitimate. Apparently the toilets are overflowing, the pipes are leaking and the floors are dirty. These conditions are part of a long list of Rio problems.

Andrew Luck Biggest Contract In NFL History, Human Body Parts In Rio

NFL

Andrew LuckThe Indianapolis Colts signed QB Andrew Luck to the biggest contract in NFL history. He will get $140 million over 6 years with a whopping $87 million guaranteed. The largest amount previously guaranteed was $65 million to the NY Giants’ QB Eli Manning and the San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers. Luck was the #1 pick in 2012 out of Stanford University.  Luck led the Colts to the playoffs in his first three seasons with the team but suffered from injuries in 2015. Colts’ owner, Jim Irsay doesn’t seem concerned with his future health. He said, “I’ve never seen him more motivated to having a great season in terms of taking care of himself and just working out.”

OLYMPICS

News just keeps getting worse coming out of Rio De Janeiro, the site of the Olympics. On Wednesday, human body parts washed up on a beach close to where Olympic volleyball will take place. In addition to concerns about pollution and the Zika virus, now Olympic athletes and fans have to deal with concern over drug traffickers and violent crimes.

FanDuel And DraftKings Illegal In NY, Luck And Allen Lacerated Kidney

FANTASY SPORTS

Draft KingsIn a big blow to the Fantasy sports world, the NY Attorney General ruled that FanDuel and DraftKings is a form of gambling and therefore illegal. These two companies claim that their online fantasy competition is based on skill not luck so should not be categorized as gambling. Both companies have been asked to cease operations in NY which is a huge loss of customers.  It will be interesting to see if other states follow course.

FOOTBALL

Andrew LuckUnfortunately Indianapolis Colts’ QB Andrew Luck is expected to miss at least 4 weeks for a lacerated kidney and abdominal injury he sustained at the end of the Colts/Broncos game on Sunday. 40 year old Matt Hasselbeck will start for Luck. The San Diego Chargers also placed their receiver Keenan Allen on injured reserve for a lacerated kidney, but he’s not expected to come back for the entire season.

Astros Momentum In Win Over Royals, Rangers Over Blue Jays, Hasselbeck Leads Colts

BASEBALL

The Houston Astros were coming off a big wild card win over the New York Yankees and they brought that momentum into their first game against the Kansas City Royals on Thursday. The Astros now have a 1-0 lead in the series.  Johnny Cueto will take the mound for the Royals in game 2 Friday afternoon. He was acquired in late July for just this kind of pressure game. Expect an exciting game 2. Houston 5, Kansas City 2.
Elsewhere in the baseball playoffs, Toronto fans had high hopes going into the post-season, but on Thursday they took on the visiting Texas Rangers who looked primed for the post season.  Yovani Gallardo gave a solid pitching performance for the Rangers, and Texas now leads 1-0 in the 5 game series.  The Blue Jays better hope their bats show up for Game 2.  Texas 5, Toronto 3.

FOOTBALL

Matt Hasselbeck In the NFL, it was Thursday Night Football between the Indianapolis Colts and the Houston Texans.  Just before the game, the Colts announced they would be without Andrew Luck for the second straight week, and would have to turn to 40-year old Matt Hasselbeck for the road game in Houston.  The Texans, however, had to jockey between two of their quarterbacks and seemed incapable of doing anything special. Hasselbeck, on the other hand, had a very nice game throwing for two touchdowns and leading the Colts to victory.  The Colts are now 2-0 with Hasselbeck under center.  Indianapolis 27, Houston 20.

Jets Dominate Colts, Rodgers Takes Stab At Wilson, Cutler/Brees Injured

FOOTBALL

Andrew LuckThe New York Jets defense dominated Monday night’s matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. Colts’ QB Andrew Luck played unusually sloppy while the Jets D lead by Darrelle Revis caused the Colts to crumble. Colts are now 0-2 and the NY Jets are surprisingly 2-0. Jets 20, Colts 7.

Aaron RodgersIn other NFL news, the gossip train is in motion after Sunday night’s Packers v. Seahawks game.   People were wondering if Packers’ QB Aaron Rodgers was taking a jab at religious Seahawks’ QB Russell Wilson after the game when he said “I think God was a Packers fan tonight“.  Wilson is known, like many athletes, for thankingGod after a victory.  Given that the Packers and Seahawks are quickly becoming rivals, this may have been Rodgers attempt to show Seattle that the Packers are the team to beat in the NFC.

In Chicago, it looks like the Bears have an issue at quarterback.  Jay Cutler got injured in Sunday’s game and now it’s reported that he will miss at least 2 weeks.  Former Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen will now get his shot at attempting to bring the Bears to glory.  It’s too early in the season to count any team out, but things do look gloomy in Chicago.
Finally, in New Orleans, the Saints worst nightmare has come true:  Drew Brees is injured and will likely miss a few weeks.  The Saints have never had to survive without Brees calling the shots, but now they will hope their back-up Luke McCown, the unlikely star of a recent Verizon commercial campaign, can manage their offense and turn the team around. McCown is NOT Drew Brees, however and the Saints may have a tough season. .
