Knicks Fire Coach, Timberwolves Break Streak, Fultz Youngest Stat, Westbrook Triple-Double Average,Mets Best Start, Thompson Brothers

BASKETBALL

The New York Knicks fired coach Jeff Hornacek. The Knicks missed the post-season the last five years, and even though Hornacek had only been Head coach for two years, the team wanted some new blood. Memphis coach David Fizdale and former Cleveland coach David Blatt have been batted about as potential candidates for the job.

With an overtime win over the Denver Nuggets, the Minnesota Timberwolves broke the streak for the longest playoff drought in NBA history. Their last playoff appearance was in 2004.

Rookie Markelle Fultz topped the Philadelphia 76ers night with his first triple-double (and at 19 years old, the youngest player to record that stat), as the Philadelphia 76ers won their 16th straight and clinched the #3 seed in the playoffs.

Speaking of triple-doubles, Russell Westbrook became the first player in NBA history to average a triple-double twice.  He averaged a triple-double last season and miraculously did it again this season.

The New York Mets won their 8th straight game and improve to 10-1, their best start in franchise history. Unfortunately for the Los Angeles Dodgers, they have fallen 4-7 this season, their worst start since 1994.  In their 6-16 drubbing against the Oakland Athletics, Dodgers’ Outfielder Yasiel Puig tried to get his first home-run of the season, but Oakland Athletics center fielder Trayce Thompson, made a perfectly timed catch to keep Puig homerless. What many people might not know is Trayce is the younger brother of the Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson.

Rockets Sign Harden To Largest NBA Contract, Lonzo Ball’s Debut, Fultz Sprained Ankle

BASKETBALL

The Houston Rockets signed James Harden to the largest contract in NBA history. After Harden made the NBA All-Star Team, he was eligible for a designated player extension which combined with his $118 million extension signed last July, boosts him to a $228 million contract until the end of his contract in 2022.

The Los Angeles Lakers Lonzo Ball (#2 pick in the draft) had a rough start to his NBA Summer League debut going only 2 of 15 shooting against the Los Angeles Clippers. He came back strong, however, the next night with his first triple double in the pros. Not surprisingly, Ball is bringing the fans out with over 17,000 tickets sold for Saturday night’s game. He’s even wearing his Big Baller Brand shoes.

In other summer league news, the Philadelphia 76ers #1 pick Markelle Fultz suffered a sprained ankle Saturday night in a matchup with the Golden State Warriors. He will miss the rest of Summer League, but is expected to be back to normal activities in 1-2 weeks.

NBA Draft Tonight, Cavs Offer Billups Job

BASKETBALL

The NBA draft is tonight with the Philadelphia 76ers owning the first pick. It’s been widely reported they will take Washington’s Markelle Fultz. All eyes will then be on Lonzo Ball (and his controversial dad LaVar) who will likely get picked picked #2 by the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Cleveland Cavaliers made news this week by firing their GM David Griffin. According to reports, former NBA star Chauncey Billups has recently been offered the job of head of basketball operations. In addition to the front office disarray surrounding the team, rumors are flying about LeBron James either heading to the Los Angeles Lakers or LA Clippers when he becomes a free agent next summer.
