The NBA regular season ended Wednesday night the and the playoff seeds are set. The Boston Celtics secured the #1 seed while the Cleveland Cavaliers fell to the #2 seed in the East. The Golden State Warriors had the #1 seed wrapped up in the West for awhile now with the San Antonia Spurs grabbing the #2 seed. The post-season begins this weekend. Now that the New York Knicks season is over, rumors continue to fly on whether the organization will trade Carmelo Anthony. Anthony has two years left on his $124 million 5 year contract. Carmelo will meet with coach Phil Jackson to discuss options, but admitted it was “hard to trust” Jackson because he was openly critical of him this season. He said, “If somebody was talking bad about you indirectly at your job, what would you do? You would feel a certain way. You would want that person to come straightforward with you.”
Everyone knows of the United Airlines fiasco this past week, but Marshawn Lynch had his own airport pr disaster when he slapped a phone out of a teenagers hand trying to get an autograph from him. To make matters even worse, he walked back to the teenagers and spit at them. For a guy trying to end his retirement and get hired by a new team (the Oakland Raiders), disrespecting fans is not exactly the best way to ingratiate yourself to management. No comments
Buffalo Bills’ coach Rex Ryan’s first visit back to Metlife Stadium after being fired by the Jets last season was a triumph. In the Thursday night matchup, the Bills defeated the Jets 22-17. If you watched the game, you noticed the uniforms looked a bit odd. The NFL has a Thursday night “Color Rush” campaign where teams will wear the primary color of their alternate uniforms. Unfortunately, the NFL did not take into consideration that color blind fans would have a difficult time distinguishing between the teams. Apparently 10 million Americans are affected by colorblindness and the red/green distinctions is the most common.
After hearing so many stories of NFL players bad behavior, it was nice to read about Marshawn Lynch’s kindness to a McDonalds employee. After last weekend’s win over Dallas, the Seahawks’ Lynch stopped at a McDonalds for a snack. An employee complimented Lynch on his shoes, which got the men talking about career goals. Lynch then gave the employee $500 to buy the shoes and encouraged him to pursue his dreams.
And speaking of shoes, everyone’s favorite 3 year old, Riley Curry (NBA Superstar Stephen Curry’s daughter) just starred in her first commercial and photo shoot for “freshly picked moccasins”.No comments
In the NFL, Marshawn Lynch’s mother is calling for Seattle’s offensive coordinator, Darrel Bevell to be fired. She called Bevell “The Worst Playcaller Ever”. Of course, she was mad when her son didn’t get the ball on the goal line in last year’s Super Bowl, but she also thought the Seahawks made some awful calls against the Rams on Sunday. She’s definitely not alone in her sentiments. Many Seattle fans agree with her.
Elsewhere in the NFL, it’s looking like the Cowboys will be without star wide receiver Dez Bryant for at least 6 weeks. They are looking for answers at the wide receiver position so they took a risk and are bringing in Brice Butler from the Oakland Raiders. Butler was a 7th round pick for the Raiders in 2013. He’s a huge athletic target and could be a great pickup.
Finally in the NFL, one of the most anticipated match-ups this coming week is the Buffalo Bills vs. The New England Patriots. The Bills look terrific, but the Pats have always had their number. To gain momentum, the entire Buffalo Bills team is trash talking the Patriots. Nobody is holding back, not even Buffalo head coach Rex Ryan. The Pats, however, typically dominate if they feel offended. The game is Sunday 1:oo pm est.
In the NFL, Cleveland Browns star receiver Josh Gordon has been suspended every year he’s been in the league. Last year, he received a season-long suspension, but after a lengthy appeal, got it reduced to just 12 games. One would think that would be the end of it, but just a week ago Josh Gordon was caught abusing the substance policy yet again. The NFL has banned Gordon again for at least one full calendar year. This is a huge blow to the Browns organization who was relying on Gordon to be their go to receiver whom they could build a receiver core around. Now, it’s unsure if Gordon will ever play in the NFL.
Elsewhere in the NFL, Arizona Cardinals linebacker Larry Foote has openly criticized Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch for his media antics. Foote said that Lynch’s defensive interview tactics in which he told the media to ‘go-away’ is giving kids the wrong impression. Foote felt that this implied an anti-authority tone and taught kids to disrespect all forms of authority like parents, teachers, and police. It’s just an opinion of course, but Foote feels that kids need more positive messages out there.
Lance Armstrong is making headlines again after he hit two parked cars after too much drinking and partying. To avoid national media attention, Armstrong asked his girlfriend to take the blame to keep the cameras off of him. She agreed, but this story has unraveled and now Armstrong is in even hotter water. Not exactly the best plan.No comments
Super Bowl 49 between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks did not disappoint. Vegas had this game as a “Pick Em”, meaning that even Vegas didn’t have a clue which team would win the game. These were two teams playing excellent football headed into a game that would cement legacies. If Tom Brady and the Pats won, Tom Brady would be launched into the “Greatest QB of all time” conversation. If the Seahawks won, Seattle would start to be called a dynasty, and their defense would be launched into the “Greatest Defenses Of All Time” conversations. So how would it play out?
The Pats got up early, but then Seattle came storming back late in the second quarter to tie the game at half time. This one looked like it was going to be a game for the ages. Seattle even took a 10 point lead in the 3rd quarter and looked like they had control. But, in the 4th quarter, Tom Brady started working his magic. He pulled his team them within 3 points, and then he got the lead late with a touchdown pass to Julian Edelman. And that’s when the game got really interesting.
Seattle had a 2-minute drive to try and win the game. After an incredible deep pass from Russell Wilson to Marshawn Lynch, the Seahawks were in good position at mid-field. Wilson tossed a long bomb to Jermaine Kearse. Kearse didn’t make the catch and hit the ground. But… the ball didn’t hit the ground, it landed on his foot, then his chest. Kearse bobbled it, then made the catch while lying on the ground at about the 8 yard line. This unbelievable reception could go down as one of the best catches in Super Bowl history.
The Seahawks then gave the ball to their beast mode running back Marshawn Lynch, who easily ran it down to the 1-yard line. It looked like the Seahawks were on their way to taking a lead and being within only 25 seconds of winning the Super Bowl. All they had to do was hand it to Marshawn Lynch again on 2nd down, and let him run it in for a touchdown. Except… head coach Pete Carroll confusingly, mysteriously, inexplicably called a pass play over the middle. Russell Wilson tried to hit his receiver, but there were 3 Patriots defending him and the Pats rookie Malcolm Butler came up with the game winning interception and the game was over. Everyone watching was stunned.
The Patriots won the Super Bowl 28-24. The Super Bowl MVP, Tom Brady, now has 4 Super Bowl rings in 6 Super Bowl appearances, and the Seahawks won’t be getting over this for a very long time.No comments
In the NFL, Marshawn Lynch is simply tired of the media. Yesterday, at a press conference, Marshawn effectively asked the media to go away. He basically said, ‘I don’t know what you expect from me, I don’t know how you are trying to portray me, but I don’t care what you think”. This is all getting so tiring and begs the question as to why “every” athlete has to talk to the media. Sure, some guys are naturals at it, but there are people out there who are simply reserved, and being a good, comfortable public speaker really has nothing to do with getting paid to run the football. Perhaps the NFL needs to change this contractual obligation.
Speaking of Lynch, there is now a phenomenon circling him at the Super Bowl. So many people are hooked on Lynch’s “Beast Mode” clothing line that a pop-up store has appeared in Arizona just to sell his “Beast Mode” apparel. The whole store is dedicated to this new clothing line, and shirts with slogans he has put out there, such as his famous “Boss”. It just goes to show you how quickly demand for something can occur.
And in the NBA, the all-star reserves were announced. The headlines: Jimmy Butler and Klay Thompson were the notable first time all-stars. Three Atlanta Hawks made the team (Al Horford, Paul Millsap, and Jeff Teague). That is pretty incredible considering that this is a team that values itself on ‘team ball’. And the major omissions: DeMarcus Cousins, and former rookie of the year Damian Lillard). There is a chance those guys make the team if there is a last minute injury, but as of right now, that’s a major snub.1 comment
In the NFL, it was media day for both the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks. This is a chance for every player to get up close and personal with the media and answer all types of questions — from serious to just plain fun (e.g. someone showing their favorite dance move).
The first highlight of the day was, Richard Sherman weighing in on “deflategate”. And of course, Sherman was going to say something controversial. Sherman said, in so many words, that if the Patriots were found guilty, that they probably wouldn’t be fined too heavily. This is primarily because, in Sherman’s opinion, Roger Goodell is good friends with Patriots owner Robert Kraft. Goodell was even at Kraft’s house during the AFC Championship. Sherman opined that as long as stuff like that is happening, he doesn’t see the Patriots receiving any fines.
But the best part of the media day was, ironically, the Seahawks’ Marshawn Lynch who HATES talking to the press. Last year, he refused to talk to the media and received a heavy fine. Lynch was fined multiple times during the year for a variety of instances. So, at media day, Lynch was upfront and honest, answering every question with “I’m just here so I don’t get fined”. Whatever they said, his retort was “I’m just here so I don’t get fined”.
Finally, in the NBA, we found out who the contestants would be for this year’s slam dunk contest on February 14th during the NBA All Star Weekend. And it’s going to be a good one. We get to see Milwaukee’s “Greek Freak”, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Minnesota’s dunking rookie Zach LaVine, the Brooklyn Nets Mason Plumlee, and 2nd year star Victor Oladipo. The contest has been lackluster the past few seasons, save for a few awesome dunks, but hopefully this year it turns into a show of shows. And these guys are amazing jumpers, so it’s going to be fantastic. No comments
Wilson Rushes Career High In Win Over Redskins, Columbia Women’s Cycling Team’s Controversial Uniforms
The Seattle Seahawks overcame significant penalties to beat the Washington Redskins in prime time on Monday night football. Seahawks’ QB Russell Wilson had a tremendous game rushing for a career high 122 yards and 201 yards passing with 2 td’s. The Seahawks’ RB, Marshawn Lynch added big yards too with 72 rushing yards, 45 receiving yards and a TD. Seattle 27, Washington 17.
The Columbia Women’s Cycling Team has a new and very controversial uniform. The red and yellow uniform features a wide strip of cloth around their private parts that makes them look nude. According to the International Cycling Union president Brian Cookson, the spandex ensemble as “unacceptable by any standard of decency.” Whatever you think of this uniform, it’s getting people talking about women’s cycling so maybe they are doing something right. No comments
