Artest Changing Name To “The Pandas Friend”, Tiger Dropping F Word, Donovan Retiring

BASKETBALL

Metta World PeaceFormer NBA star, Ron Artest, also known as Metta World Peace, is apparently changing his name….again.  According to his twitter feed, now that he’ll be playing for the Chinese Basketball Association, he will be called, “The Pandas Friend”. Now, that should be interesting on the back of a jersey !

GOLF

Tiger is having a tough time after just one day at the PGA Championship. After three bogeys he was heard saying, “for f*** sakes”. Tiger finished the day three over par, clearly not the same Tiger.

SOCCER

Landon DonovanAfter a 14 year career in Major League Soccer, Landon Donovan announced he’ll be retiring.  As the top scorer in MLS history, he’s considered one of the best players of all time. According to USA Today, he’s the face of MLS and will be sorely missed.

WATERCOOLER CHAT: MIAMI 3-1 EDGE, SANCHEZ “BUTT FUMBLE” SELLS, DONOVAN MLS ALL TIME GOAL KING

BASKETBALL

James, Wade, and BoshIn the NBA, it was Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Indiana Pacers and the Miami Heat.  The Pacers needed the win to tie up the series if they wanted the home court advantage they worked all year to earn to actually matter.  But, the Heat had other plans, and Monday night, LeBron James and Chris Bosh helped topple the Pacers and to gain a 3-1 edge in the series.  The Pacers are now one game away from elimination, and LeBron is getting very close to his 3rd straight title.  Miami 102, Indiana 90.

FOOTBALL

Butt FumbleIn some funny news out of the NFL, former Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez might not be having a Hall of Fame career, but he’s hoping to get that career back on track in Philadelphia.  While he will be a back-up, he’s still practicing hard in an attempt to contribute in some way in Chip Kelly’s offense.  His career up until this point, however, is marked by hilarity, namely the famous “Butt Fumble” from two seasons ago, in which Sanchez slipped and his face went smack dab into a player’s back end.  That Butt Fumble jersey just sold for $820 to a Jets fan.  When your jersey that marked the most embarrassing moment of your career sells for a nearly $1000, that is definitely not a good mark on your pro career.

SOCCER

Finally, the big news of the weekend came from the soccer world.  The head of USA soccer didn’t select soccer icon Landon Donovan for the team.  There was outrage over this, but Donovan has kept his cool throughout.  But, he has still staunchly defended himself, saying he should be on the team.  He was actually hoping to get a starting spot, and was shocked that he didn’t even make the roster.  Many think it’s because of the controversy between Donovan and the coach.  People suspect that the coach just didn’t like him.  As revenge, Donovan went out with his MLS Team, the LA Galaxy, and scored two goals — making him the MLS all-time goal king.  It’s a great statement, but it will still be disappointing not having him out there in the World Cup.

WATERCOOLER CHAT: CUBAN’S CONTROVERSIAL REMARKS, CAVS INTERVIEWING, LANDON DONOVAN OFF TEAM

BASKETBALL

Mark Cuban.jpgIn sports, the major controversial story of the day surrounded remarks made by Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.  In an interview with Inc. magazine, Cuban said, to paraphrase, that everyone has their own prejudices, including him, but that we must learn to deal with them and improve them.  He said, as an example, that if he saw a black kid in a hoodie, he would cross to the other side of the street.  But if he saw a white, bald guy with tattoos all over his scalp, Cuban would walk back across the street again.

The sports world was up in arms over this, with many saying that this is extremely offensive to the Trayvon Martin situation.  Cuban came out and apologized to the Martin family, but said he did stand by his words and the message of his interview.  He said, via Twitter, “helping people realize that while we all may have our prejudices and bigotries, we have to learn that it’s an issue that we have to control, that it’s part of my responsibility as an entrepreneur to try to solve it”.  This story will probably cool quite quickly.

Finally, in some NBA coaching news, the Cleveland Cavaliers, who just got another #1 pick in the draft, are still looking for a leader to guide this young team.  On Thursday, they reached out to Florida’s Billy Donovan.  Donovan has excelled to the level of elite coaches in college basketball, and he is clearly someone who knows how to coach young people.   It would be surprising to see him jump ship for the Cavs, however, if the Cavs somehow land LeBron in the off-season, the Cavs become a very exciting destination.

SOCCER

Landon DonovanThe other major story of the day:  Landon Donovan.  Donovan has been the face of US Soccer the past 10 years.  He was a hero in the last World Cup, and is the signature player on the team.  He is older now, however, and on Thursday, the coach decided that Donovan didn’t make the final 23-man roster.  Many are calling this an outrage, as Donovan is still such an incredible player.  People suspect that the coach just had a personal issue with Donovan and didn’t want him on the team, but the coach defended this by saying that some players were just better than Donovan.  Despite the fact that Donovan won’t be playing at the World Cup this year, he still said that he will be cheering on his friends and teammates.
