Mets And Giants Wild Card Game, Odell Beckham Jr Unsportsmanlike, Vikings 4-0, Johnny Football Trademark, Super Bowl Goes GAGA
With a 5-3 victory over the Phillies on Saturday, the New York Mets clinched a National League wild card playoff spot against the San Francisco Giants. Even though both teams have the same regular season record, the winner-take-all wild card game will be played at Citi Field because the Mets won the season series over the Giants. Tune in Wednesday night 8:00 pm ET.
The big news from the Monday Night Football game is the NY Giants Odell Beckham Jr’s unsportsmanlike conduct. Odell was charged with a penalty for taunting the Minnesota Vikings Cornerback Xavier Rhodes after Rhodes hit him out of bounds. Odell ended up with a paltry 23 yards for the day and has been criticized by his teammates and the media for letting his emotions get the best of him. On a more positive note, the Minnesota Vikings offense came to play. The Vikings are now 4-0 (only other 4-0 team is the Denver Broncos). What’s most surprising about the Vikings winning season so far is the performance of Sam Bradford. Bradford is a former Heisman Trophy winner who had a mediocre career with the St. Louis Rams and the Philadelphia Eagles. The Vikings are also performing without their star running back, Adrian Peterson, who is out until at least December with a torn meniscus. Vikings 24-Giants 10.
In other football news, former Heisman QB Johnny Manziel (who was suspended from the NFL and cut by the Cleveland Browns) and his lawyers filed with the US Patent and Trademark office to protect his nickname, “Johnny Football”. Now that Manziel has been reinstated by the NFL, it’s possible some NFL team may take a chance on the troubled QB and pick him up.
As Lady Gaga wrote on her twitter account, “This year the Super Bowl goes GAGA”, meaning after weeks of speculation, it’s official and she will play in this year’s Super Bowl halftime show.1 comment
The Brooklyn Nets hope Jeremy Lin releases his “Linsanity” on the Team next year for a 3 year $36 million contract. Lin admitted his 11 game run (averaging 24 points and 9 assists) while the New York Knicks were considering releasing him was exciting. He now says he doesn’t want to be thought of as a phenomenon. He just wants to contribute to the Nets and help them rebuild.
Former Ohio State running back and 4th pick in the draft, Ezekiel Elliott, won’t play in an NFL game until September but his jersey his selling off the shelves. Elliott’s #21 Dallas Cowboys jersey is the best selling item in the league.
Former Cleveland Brown QB Johnny Manziel can’t seem to stay out of the news. First there was his odd instagram post announcing he was getting help and would be back soon, then over the weekend in Hawaii, he punched a guest in the face at his friend’s wedding. If he does “come back”, at this rate it looks as if it won’t be on a football field.
Dave Roberts, the Los Angeles Dodger’s manager, created a panic this week by announcing his star pitcher and many would argue the best pitcher in the League, Clayton Kershaw, was perhaps having a setback in his recovery from a herniated disk. Roberts indicated “surgery is more of a possibility” but didn’t say whether that would be this year or next or down the road at some point. Roberts’ comment has created a huge buzz around the League speculating on whether Kershaw will be out for the season. No comments
Bulls Trade Derrick Rose To Knicks, NBA Draft Thursday Night, Manziel More Trouble, No Olympics For Rory McIIroy
In more trading news, the New York Knicks traded away Robin Lopez, Jerian Grant and Jose Calderon with the Chicago Bulls to get Derrick Rose. Many are confused by the trade as Rose blew out his knee in 2012 and hasn’t been the same superstar player he once was.
Watch the NBA draft Thursday night at 7:00 pm EST on ESPN to see who goes #1. Will it be LSU’s Ben Simmons to the 76ers? And with the #2 pick, will the Los Angeles Lakers pick Brandon Ingram?
Former Cleveland Browns’ QB Johnny Manziel can’t seem to stay away from problems. According to Dallas police, Manziel reported he was involved in a hit-and-run accident this week. No one yet seems to know the full story.
The Zika virus seems to be having more of an affect. Golfer Rory Mcllroy has now decided not to travel to Brazil for the Olympics because of fears of the virus. It hasn’t been confirmed yet, but LeBron James may not go as well. Already Steph Curry, James Harden and Russell Westbrook have decided to forego Olympic Gold.No comments
UFC fighter Conor McGregor announced on Twitter he’s retiring early. “I’ve decided to retire young. Thanks for the cheese. See ya’s later,” the unceremonious tweet read. McGregor is 27 years old and has an incredible UFC record of 7-1, having just lost his first championship fight on March 5th . He’s been MIA since making the tweet, and his spokesman couldn’t be reached. The President of the UFC announced on Tuesday that McGregor has been pulled from the main event of an upcoming UFC spectacle in Las Vegas because he was unwilling to participate in mandatory promotional preparations for the fight. “Conor did not want to come to Las Vegas and film the commercial and be a part of the marketing. He’s in Iceland training,” UFC president Dana White said. “Is Conor retiring? Only he can answer that question. I don’t know.” McGregor made history in December by knocking out Jose Aldo, one of the best MMA fighters, in just 13 seconds. Whether McGregor really intends on retiring is still totally unclear.
Former Cleveland Browns Quarterback Johnny Manziel just can’t stay out of the news. Nike announced they ended their endorsement deal with Manziel. The quarterback was recently released by the Browns for off-the-field issues, and was then dropped by his agent. There’s also a grand jury investigation in Dallas going on now to determine if Manziel assaulted his girlfriend. Sound bad? It’s not over. Manziel was just dropped by his second agent in two months and that’s with an agent, Drew Rosenhaus, who hasn’t fired a single player in 27 years. Manziel has a five-day window to seek treatment if he wants to stay with Rosenhaus. Manziel has never been apologetic about his partying ways, nor has he ever made much of anything happen on an NFL field. If he doesn’t change quickly, his career will be over, virtually before it even began.
Former New York Giants’ Defensive End, Michael Strahan is leaving his gig as co-host on “Live With Kelly and Michael” and joining the cast of Good Morning America. The producers are hoping Strahan boosts their declining viewership.1 comment
The Buffalo Bills play the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday and tensions will be high. Eagles’ coach, Chip Kelly, traded star running back LeSean McCoy back in March. Sunday will be the first time Kelly and McCoy will face each other since the trade. Kelly has stated that he would like to shake McCoy’s hand, but McCoy is still bitter and said “Chip can’t shake s*** at all. Nothing.” This bitterness should lend some drama to Sunday’s matchup.
In other NFL news, QB Johnny Manziel is getting another chance. After multiple off-field incidents (including partying all weekend during the Brown’s bye week), Cleveland Browns’ coach Mike Pettine will start Manziel on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. Pettine stated the repercussions would be harsh if Manziel acts inappropriately again. “To be a starting quarterback in this league, with that comes great responsibility. The field is part of it and off the field is another part of it.”No comments
After Kobe announced his retirement on Sunday, the NBA is gearing up for the Kobe Bryant farewell tour. Prices at Staples Center in LA are going through the roof as everyone wants to see Kobe play one last time. Right now, however, Kobe is on the road. His first stop was in Philly, where it all started. Kobe went to school at Lower Merion High School where he won a state championship. Both the Sixers and the Lakers are having horrible seasons but the Sixers managed to pull themselves together to pick up their first win. Philadelphia 103, LA Lakers 91.
In college football, after Georgia parted ways with their longtime coach Mark Richt, they settled on Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart. Smart is clearly a winner at Alabama, and the Bulldogs are hoping that Smart will be a strong recruiter and help the Georgia program become part of the National Playoff picture. Success might take a few years, but the Bulldogs believe in Smart’s resume (3 National Championships at ‘Bama), and are betting he brings them back to prominence. All is not over for Richt as he has already been contacted by many schools to join their program and some are even trying to recruit Richt to be the next Governor of Georgia.
The Cleveland Browns lost their starting quarterback Josh McCown for the season and are looking for answers at quarterback. Their coach, Mike Pettine is silent on who will play, but many want to see Manziel again. Manziel, however, has been relegated to the 3rd string QB, and Austin Davis is next in line. On the other hand, playing Manziel could be a chance for the Browns to see if he has what it takes to get better or if they should cut him next year.
Warriors Best Start In NBA History, Manziel Demoted, Top 4 College Teams, Awesome Donuts To Wisconsin Police
The Golden State Warriors are certainly golden as have now secured their place in history as the team with the best start to an NBA season. With their route of the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night, they posted their 16th straight win for the season eclipsing the previous record held by the 1993 Houston Rockets and the 1948 Washington Capitols. Warriors’ coach Steve Kerr has been absent from the sidelines due to complications from spinal surgery but has still been a major presence for the team. He spoke to the players prior to the game and reminded them of their four core values: joy, mindfulness, compassion, and competition. When the players have fun, they’re exhibiting joy, when they think through plays, they are mindful, when they get along and conduct themselves properly, they are compassionate and when they get on the court to win, they are competitive. How do you not love this team?
In the NFL, the Cleveland Browns were on a bye last week, and one would assume that their starting quarterback Johnny Manziel would take the time to rest, recover, and study the playbook. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case, as video emerged of Johnny Manziel partying in Texas. In the video, he was holding a bottle of champagne, appeared to be drunk, and was singing into the camera. The Browns were not so happy with this type of behavior and proclaimed that Manziel was not fit or responsible enough to be their starter. They relinquished Manziel of his starting quarterback duties and demoted him to 3rd string QB. This fall from grace for Manziel might be a sign that he won’t be back in a Browns uniform next season.
The new top 4 playoff rankings were released in college football. With some upsets and unimpressive wins this past weekend, there were a few shockers. Notre Dame and Ohio State fell out of the top 4, while Oklahoma and Iowa jumped in. At this point in the season, it’s Clemson, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Iowa rounding out the bracket. There is still controversy, however, as Oklahoma lost to a very weak Texas team, while Iowa hasn’t played any impressive teams yet. It’s likely that the top 4 will change again at least once before the playoffs are set.
Finally, in a humorous story out of Wisconsin, a fan has sent 20 dozen coconut donuts to the police that ejected him from the game on Saturday. A fan traveled from Los Angeles to see Wisconsin play. When he tried to enter a section that was not what his ticket indicated, he was surrounded by police and ejected from the stadium. The fan claims he misread the ticket and the whole incident was a misunderstanding. As a gesture of his feelings, he sent the cops 20 dozen coconut donuts. He said, “This was meant as a harmless way to show both my general gratitude for what you do (which is awesome), but slight disdain for my treatment Saturday (which was not so awesome). Donuts are awesome, but coconut donuts are not so awesome. The Wisconsin police department had a good sense of humor and called the shipment “brilliant”.
The Cy Young Award went to two heavily bearded facial hair pitchers. The Chicago Cubs Jake Arrieta won the National League Cy Young Award and the Houston Astros Dallas Keuchel won the award for the American League. The award is giving yearly to the best pitchers in the National League and American League in baseball.
Arrieta went on a late season tear that propelled his Cubs to the playoffs and Keuchel led the Astros to the playoffs for the first time since 2005. Both winners overcame difficult starts in the League but came to dominate due to hard work and perseverance. Congrats.
Johnny Manziel, aka Johnny Football, has taken over as the starting QB for the Cleveland Browns over injured Josh McCown. The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner had a rough start in his first season of the NFL with a stint in rehab but now seems to have matured and will be leading his team.No comments
In the NFL, the Tennessee Titans fired head coach Ken Whisenhunt. Whisenhunt has only won 3 of 23 games in his time in Nashville. The Titans promoted Mike Mularkey to head coach, and are hoping that he will be able to do something exciting with their #2 overall draft pick QB Marcus Mariota.
Elsewhere in the NFL, it looks like the Johnny Manziel era in Cleveland is about to resume again. Their starting quarterback Josh McCown is dealing with some nagging injuries, and the Browns have decided to put the ball in Manziel’s hands. Manziel recently made headlines after being a part of a domestic dispute with his girlfriend. The incident was caught on tape, and did not help Manziel’s image as the savior of Cleveland football. When he takes the field, however, he’s quick to run or hurl an 80-yard bomb so some fans are excited to see what he has in store.
Finally, in the NFL, the Dallas Cowboys have had enough off-the-field trouble with their running back Joseph Randle. Randle came into the year as their starting running back. Randle is now injured, has an impending suspension against him because of a domestic dispute, and last week, when Randle was told he lost the starting job to Darren McFadden, he left the facility. Management doesn’t have tolerance for that type of behavior, so he is now now looking for a job.No comments
The New York Giants are feeling inspired after their win last week over the Washington Redskins. They may be 1-2, but the NFC East is a very weak division, and the Giants think they can win it. With that said, they are a bit thin at wide receiver given all the injuries on their roster so they brought in two big names: former New England Patriots’ great Wes Welker and former Giants’ hero Hakeem Nicks. Both players are at the tail end of their career, but their veteran leadership could be valuable.
Elsewhere in the NFL, in some Johnny Football news (aka Johnny Manziel), a report surfaced earlier this week that Browns’ players were surprised and upset that Manziel wasn’t their starting quarterback. He was benched in favor of the now healthy Josh McCown even though McCown was dreadful on Sunday against the Raiders. Browns’ receiver Andrew Hawkins said this story is “1000% made-up”. McCown will likely start next week.
Derrick Rose is the star of the Chicago Bulls team but is prone to injury. Other than last season, he’s barely seen the court. Now, with team practices underway, Rose took a shot to the face and suffered an “orbital fracture”. Rose will require surgery and is out indefinitely. The Bulls brass may decide to move on from Rose as their marquee franchise player. No comments
