Cubs Beat Nationals In Error Filled NLDS Game 5, Elliott Suspension Reinstated, Wentz Helps Eagles Win, Combs Wants NFL

BASEBALL

After 4 hours and 37 minutes, the Chicago Cubs beat the Washington Nationals in a bizarre, error filled game.  The Cubs were behind one run in the 5th inning, but then Nationals star reliever Max Scherzer came in the game, and everything went downhill. After a complete meltdown by the Nationals, the defending World Series champs the Cubs won 9-8 and move on to the National League Championship series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Unfortunately for the Nationals, they continue to look for their first post-season win in franchise history. They have lost in the NLDS in 2012, 2014 and 2016.

FOOTBALL

Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott could miss 6 games after his suspension for domestic violence is reinstated by the U.S. Court of Appeals. The Cowboys are on a bye this week, but the suspension will start immediately.  Other appeals will follow, but Elliott could be out until November 30th.

On Thursday Night Football, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz put on a show with three touchdowns and 222 yards for a 28-23 win over the Carolina Panthers. The Eagles are now 5-1.

With all of the controversy surrounding the NFL these past few seasons, entertainment mogul, Sean Diddy Combs, tweeted he’d be interested in not only owning an NFL team but buying the entire League. “I did have a dream to own a NFL team but now my dream is to own our own league! A league where you can be yourself. Have a retirement plan. . . . Have freedom to be a great human and protest for your people without being demonized for your beliefs as a KING!! NEW DREAM ALERT!!!!”

Sloane Stephens And Rafael Nadal Win Open, Ezekiel Elliott Big Game, Browns’ Infamous Stat

TENNIS

Sloane Stephens stunned the sports world when she took home the US Open trophy after beating fellow American Madison Keyes. After an absence of 11 months due to injury and a ranking below 800, she skyrocketed to win her first Grand Slam. After the match, she was asked if she’s motivated to win more and she light-heartedly said, “Of course, girl, did you see that check that that lady handed me? Man, if that doesn’t make you want to play tennis, I don’t know what will!”

On the men’s side, Rafael Nadal beat South African Kevin Anderson for his 16th Grand Slam Title.

FOOTBALL

The Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott received a huge welcome on Sunday after weeks of speculation about whether he’d be able to play this game or for that matter, the next 6 games. As of Friday, it looks like Elliott will continue to play for awhile as he was granted a preliminary injunction which, according to Elliott, will give him a fair trial and a chance to prove he’s innocent.  For now, the Cowboys are fortunate as Elliott helped the Cowboys overpower the NY Giants 19-3 with his 104 yards rushing

After a loss on Sunday to the Pittsburgh Steelers,  the Cleveland Browns record the infamous stat of not having won a season opener since 2004 when Jeff Garcia was the quarterback. Why is this important? According to USA Today, “teams which go 1-0 are twice as likely to reach the postseason than teams who start 0-1.”

Elliott Admits Drug Use, Luck Activated, UCLA’s Greatest Comeback, USC’s Olson’s Dream Come True

FOOTBALL

In Dallas Cowboys’ Ezekiel Elliott’s domestic abuse hearing, he admitted to using drugs while at Ohio State. Elliott is appealing his 6 game suspension for domestic abuse of his former girlfriend. No word yet on whether he’ll start the season.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck has been activated from the physically unable to perform list (PUP) but will still miss at least the first game of the season if not a few weeks more. At $140 million dollars, the Colts are anxious for their franchise quarterback to get back on the field.

On Sunday night in College football, UCLA mounted one of the greatest comebacks in college football history with a 45-44 victory after being down 34 points in the third quarter to Texas A&M. Quarterback Josh Rosen led the Bruins to an epic comeback with 292 yards and four touchdowns all in the fourth quarter.

In a heartwarming moment in college football history, USC’s Jake Olson, a blind long snapper entered the game against Western Michigan in the 4th quarter to snap the ball for an extra point.  Olson lost his left eye when he was 10 months old due to a form of eye cancer. When he was 12 years old, he learned he would need surgery to remove his right eye. Olson grew up a big USC football fan and playing in a game was a dream come true. USC’s coach spoke with Western Michigan’s coach prior to the game and agreed if Olson came in (which would happen if the game was out of reach for either team), the team wouldn’t rush him. He said to the players, “I told them the entire situation and said, ‘You can’t touch him, you can’t yell at him, everybody get down so it looks like a football play but nobody move. I told them, ‘What we’re about to do is bigger than the game. This is about what kind of people we want to be, what we represent; this is bigger than us.’”

Elliott’s Salvation Army Jump, Pats Clinch AFC East Division, Brock Benched, Raiders In Post-Season, Duncan #21 Retired

FOOTBALL

Ezekiel ElliottThe Dallas Cowboys win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers brought the team closer to an NFC East title and a first round bye, but the game was littered with mistakes and some missed opportunities. Ezekiel Elliott provided the most entertainment when he jumped in a Salvation Army kettle after scoring his 13th rushing touchdown (setting a team rookie record). According to Elliott, he saw the kettle during warmups and thought about diving in. Cowboys 26, Bucs 20.

The New England Patriots secured their place in the post-season. In a win over the Denver Broncos, the Pats clinched the AFC East Division Title and a first-round bye. Patriots 16, Broncos 3.

The Houston Texans benched their expensive quarterback Brock Osweiler after he threw two interceptions in the first half. Even though the team paid $72 million dollars over 4 years for Osweiler, the benching proved to be a good decision as backup Tom Savage turned the game around to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Texans are still in the hunt for a division title, so they will have to make a tough decision this week on which QB to play. Texans 21, Jags 20.

After 14 years, the Oakland Raiders are finally going to be playing in the postseason. With a win over the San Diego Chargers, the Raiders secure a playoff appearance. Raiders 19, Chargers 16.

BASKETBALL

screen-shot-2016-12-19-at-9-37-07-amThe San Antonio Spurs retired Tim Duncan’s number 21 jersey. Duncan played 19 seasons with the Spurs.  He won 5 titles for the team including 2 MVP awards. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich summed up the emotional presentation saying, “His empathy, his ability to make people welcome, and lead quietly, but with dignity and gravitas, made him special beyond most anybody that you could imagine.”

Roethlisberger’ Miniscus, Pats Winning, Kaep Booed, Newton’s Press Conference, Prescott Performs, Kershaw Evens Series

FOOTBALL

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger tore his meniscus in the Steeleer’s loss to the Miami Dolphins. After surgery this week, the Team will have a better idea if/when he’ll be back on the field. Dolphins 30, Steelers 15.

brady-gronkowski-2Now that New England’s QB Tom Brady is back, the team looks unbeatable. The Patriots were a solid 3-1 while Brady was on suspension, but now the team seems unstoppable. The Cincinnati Bengals kept Sunday’s game close, but Brady kept his cool throwing for 376 yards and 3 touchdowns. Tight end Rob Gronkowski added a career high 162 yards. New England Patriots 35, Cincinnati Bengals 17.

Colin Kaepernick started at quarterback for the SF 49ers on Sunday (against the Buffalo Bills) for the first time since November 2015. Bills fans showed their dislike of Kaep by booing him as he walked on the field then chanting “USA, USA” before he knelt (as he’s done all season) for the National Anthem.  The Bills were clearly fired up as the team continued their 4 game win streak with a big win over the Niners. Bills 45, Niners 16.

Cam NewtonAfter the Carolina Panthers lost another tough game (this week to the New Orleans Saints) Panthers QB Cam Newton had people talking. In an uncomfortable to watch press conference after the game, Cam either refused to answer questions or just gave one word responses while staring straight ahead. After a very long and cringe-worthy one minute and 30 seconds, Cam eventually walked out.  Saints 41, Panthers 38.

It’s a bit shocking Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett is still talking about a quarterback controversy. Rookie and 4th round draft pick, Dak Prescott,  has performed like an MVP this season, so it seems odd that anyone is still talking about having Tony Romo take over when he’s healthy. Speaking of rookies, Ezekiel Elliott’s star power has soared amassing over 100 rushing yards in each of his last 4 games. The only other player to have more rushing yards in his first 6 games was Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson in 1983.   Dallas 30, Green Bay Packers 16.

BASEBALL

Clayton Kershaw, pitching 7 scoreless innings, led the LA Dodgers to a win to even the NLCS series against the Chicago Cubs. The Dodgers and Cubs will play game 3 on Tuesday.

In the ALCS, the Cleveland Indians have a two game lead over the Toronto Blue Jays. The teams will play Game 3 on Monday night.

Romo Out With Injury, Elliott’s Solid Debut But Caught By TMZ, Raiders Las Vegas Trademark

FOOTBALL

Ezekiel ElliottThe Dallas Cowboys lost their pre-season game against the Seattle Seahawks Thursday night, which wouldn’t be that big of a deal other than the fact their quarterback Tony Romo left after only one series due to a back injury. Romo had back surgery in 2013 and missed 12 games last season with a broken collarbone. Romo had surgery on his collarbone in the off-season, and was reportedly in great shape coming into pre-season, but the injury Thursday night doesn’t bode well for the team. On the other hand, the 4th overall pick in this year’s draft, running back Ezekiel Elliott from Ohio State, had a solid debut and gave the Cowboy fans something to cheer about. That is, everyone except for Cowboys’ coach Jerry Jones. Jones saw a TMZ video of Elliott visiting a marijuana dispensary hours before the game and wasn’t too pleased. There was no sign he bought anything (marijuana is legal in Seattle) but Jones still wasn’t happy as the  substance is banned in the NFL.

The Oakland Raiders look pretty serious about their intention to relocate to Las Vegas. They recently filed for the trademark “Las Vegas Raiders”. Unfortunately, they should have thought of securing the trademark back in January when the owner was mulling the idea of a move. Six individuals have already filed for this trademark, so the U.S. Patent and  Trademark Office will have to sort it out. The trademark is a minor issue when it comes to moving a team. Among the many hurdles is securing financing and getting 24 of the 32 NFL teams to approve of the move.

Linsanity In Brooklyn, Ezekiel Jersey Top Seller, Manziel Hits Wedding Guest, Kershaw’s Back

NBA

The Brooklyn Nets hope Jeremy Lin releases his “Linsanity” on the Team next year for a 3 year $36 million contract. Lin admitted his 11 game run (averaging 24 points and 9 assists) while the New York Knicks were considering releasing him was exciting. He now says he doesn’t want to be thought of as a phenomenon. He just wants to contribute to the Nets and help them rebuild.

NFL

Ezekiel ElliottFormer Ohio State running back and 4th pick in the draft, Ezekiel Elliott, won’t play in an NFL game until September but his jersey his selling off the shelves. Elliott’s #21 Dallas Cowboys jersey is the best selling item in the league.

Former Cleveland Brown QB Johnny Manziel can’t seem to stay out of the news. First there was his odd instagram post announcing he was getting help and would be back soon, then over the weekend in Hawaii, he punched a guest in the face at his friend’s wedding. If he does “come back”, at this rate it looks as if it won’t be on a football field.

MLB

Dave Roberts, the Los Angeles Dodger’s manager, created a panic this week by announcing his star pitcher and many would argue the best pitcher in the League, Clayton Kershaw, was perhaps having a setback in his recovery from a herniated disk. Roberts indicated “surgery is more of a possibility” but didn’t say whether that would be this year or next or down the road at some point. Roberts’ comment has created a huge buzz around the League speculating on whether Kershaw will be out for the season.

Heisman Finalists Announced, Ugly MNF Game

FOOTBALL

Derrick Henry Winning the Heisman trophy is the greatest honor in all of college football. Seven finalists were announced on Monday.  The three frontrunners appear to be Alabama’s running back, Derrick Henry as he’s led the Crimson Tide’s offense with his commanding rushing stats, Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey who broke Barry Sanders all-purpose yards record, and Clemson QB DeShaun Watson with his passing efficiency.  Dalvin Cook, Baker Mayfield, Ezekiel Elliot and Keenan Reynolds round out the field. The winner will be announced Saturday night in NY.

The Monday Night Football game between the Washington Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys looked ugly and finished even uglier when the Redskins’ DeSean Jackson fumbled the ball on a punt return leading to Dallas’ only TD. Jackson tried to redeem himself with a late touchdown but Dallas had just enough time left for a field goal to win the game. Cowboys 19, Redskins 16.

Ohio State Wins First Ever National Championship, Ohio Furniture Chain Out Millions In Win, Fox Leaving Broncos

FOOTBALL

In college football, it was the game we’ve all been waiting for… The National Championship.  The game featured #2 Oregon vs. #4 Ohio State.  Ohio State was red hot coming into this game (having beaten #1 Alabama), and wanted to prove that they were in fact the best team in the country.  Oregon, on the other hand, was finally looking for its first National Championship after so many years of showing they have the flashiest and most creative offense.  So how would it play out?

Ezekiel ElliottOhio State got the early advantage, but then Oregon’s offense kicked into gear behind their Heisman Trophy Winning quarterback Marcus Mariotta.  The real star of the game, however, outside of Ohio State’s staunch defense, was their running back Ezekiel Elliott.  Elliott broke a national championship record, rushing for over 200 yards and four touchdowns. Oregon simply could not stop him. It was a thrilling and meaningful win for the Buckeyes. Not only did they occupy the final playoff spot but due to injuries to their top two quarterbacks, they were starting their third-string QB, Cardale Jones, who played solidly in only his third career start.  The Buckeye’s coach, Urban Meyer, won his 3rd National Championship, and Ohio State proved that this year’s college playoff system was a huge success.  Ohio State 42, Oregon 20.

In a fun story of the night, a furniture company in Ohio bet big on the Buckeyes. They promised customers that bought at least $1,999 of furniture between December 17th and January 1st a refund if Ohio State won by more than 7 points. This might have sounded like a good idea at the time, but looks like they will be out $1.5 million in free furniture.
Finally, in the NFL, just one day after losing to the Indianapolis Colts, Broncos coach John Fox has decided to step down from the position.   Fox and the Broncos mutually agreed to part ways.  This was likely because of Fox’s age and health conditions, and everyone is expecting the Broncos to promote offensive coordinator Adam Gase to head coach.  Gase, however, is drawing strong interest from the San Francisco 49ers, and it will be curious to see how this plays out.  The major question now though… is Peyton Manning coming back next year?
