Elliott’s Salvation Army Jump, Pats Clinch AFC East Division, Brock Benched, Raiders In Post-Season, Duncan #21 Retired
The Dallas Cowboys win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers brought the team closer to an NFC East title and a first round bye, but the game was littered with mistakes and some missed opportunities. Ezekiel Elliott provided the most entertainment when he jumped in a Salvation Army kettle after scoring his 13th rushing touchdown (setting a team rookie record). According to Elliott, he saw the kettle during warmups and thought about diving in. Cowboys 26, Bucs 20.
The New England Patriots secured their place in the post-season. In a win over the Denver Broncos, the Pats clinched the AFC East Division Title and a first-round bye. Patriots 16, Broncos 3.
The Houston Texans benched their expensive quarterback Brock Osweiler after he threw two interceptions in the first half. Even though the team paid $72 million dollars over 4 years for Osweiler, the benching proved to be a good decision as backup Tom Savage turned the game around to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Texans are still in the hunt for a division title, so they will have to make a tough decision this week on which QB to play. Texans 21, Jags 20.
After 14 years, the Oakland Raiders are finally going to be playing in the postseason. With a win over the San Diego Chargers, the Raiders secure a playoff appearance. Raiders 19, Chargers 16.
The San Antonio Spurs retired Tim Duncan’s number 21 jersey. Duncan played 19 seasons with the Spurs. He won 5 titles for the team including 2 MVP awards. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich summed up the emotional presentation saying, “His empathy, his ability to make people welcome, and lead quietly, but with dignity and gravitas, made him special beyond most anybody that you could imagine.”
Roethlisberger’ Miniscus, Pats Winning, Kaep Booed, Newton’s Press Conference, Prescott Performs, Kershaw Evens Series
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger tore his meniscus in the Steeleer’s loss to the Miami Dolphins. After surgery this week, the Team will have a better idea if/when he’ll be back on the field. Dolphins 30, Steelers 15.
Now that New England’s QB Tom Brady is back, the team looks unbeatable. The Patriots were a solid 3-1 while Brady was on suspension, but now the team seems unstoppable. The Cincinnati Bengals kept Sunday’s game close, but Brady kept his cool throwing for 376 yards and 3 touchdowns. Tight end Rob Gronkowski added a career high 162 yards. New England Patriots 35, Cincinnati Bengals 17.
Colin Kaepernick started at quarterback for the SF 49ers on Sunday (against the Buffalo Bills) for the first time since November 2015. Bills fans showed their dislike of Kaep by booing him as he walked on the field then chanting “USA, USA” before he knelt (as he’s done all season) for the National Anthem. The Bills were clearly fired up as the team continued their 4 game win streak with a big win over the Niners. Bills 45, Niners 16.
After the Carolina Panthers lost another tough game (this week to the New Orleans Saints) Panthers QB Cam Newton had people talking. In an uncomfortable to watch press conference after the game, Cam either refused to answer questions or just gave one word responses while staring straight ahead. After a very long and cringe-worthy one minute and 30 seconds, Cam eventually walked out. Saints 41, Panthers 38.
It’s a bit shocking Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett is still talking about a quarterback controversy. Rookie and 4th round draft pick, Dak Prescott, has performed like an MVP this season, so it seems odd that anyone is still talking about having Tony Romo take over when he’s healthy. Speaking of rookies, Ezekiel Elliott’s star power has soared amassing over 100 rushing yards in each of his last 4 games. The only other player to have more rushing yards in his first 6 games was Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson in 1983. Dallas 30, Green Bay Packers 16.
Clayton Kershaw, pitching 7 scoreless innings, led the LA Dodgers to a win to even the NLCS series against the Chicago Cubs. The Dodgers and Cubs will play game 3 on Tuesday.
In the ALCS, the Cleveland Indians have a two game lead over the Toronto Blue Jays. The teams will play Game 3 on Monday night. No comments
The Dallas Cowboys lost their pre-season game against the Seattle Seahawks Thursday night, which wouldn’t be that big of a deal other than the fact their quarterback Tony Romo left after only one series due to a back injury. Romo had back surgery in 2013 and missed 12 games last season with a broken collarbone. Romo had surgery on his collarbone in the off-season, and was reportedly in great shape coming into pre-season, but the injury Thursday night doesn’t bode well for the team. On the other hand, the 4th overall pick in this year’s draft, running back Ezekiel Elliott from Ohio State, had a solid debut and gave the Cowboy fans something to cheer about. That is, everyone except for Cowboys’ coach Jerry Jones. Jones saw a TMZ video of Elliott visiting a marijuana dispensary hours before the game and wasn’t too pleased. There was no sign he bought anything (marijuana is legal in Seattle) but Jones still wasn’t happy as the substance is banned in the NFL.
The Oakland Raiders look pretty serious about their intention to relocate to Las Vegas. They recently filed for the trademark “Las Vegas Raiders”. Unfortunately, they should have thought of securing the trademark back in January when the owner was mulling the idea of a move. Six individuals have already filed for this trademark, so the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office will have to sort it out. The trademark is a minor issue when it comes to moving a team. Among the many hurdles is securing financing and getting 24 of the 32 NFL teams to approve of the move.No comments
The Brooklyn Nets hope Jeremy Lin releases his “Linsanity” on the Team next year for a 3 year $36 million contract. Lin admitted his 11 game run (averaging 24 points and 9 assists) while the New York Knicks were considering releasing him was exciting. He now says he doesn’t want to be thought of as a phenomenon. He just wants to contribute to the Nets and help them rebuild.
Former Ohio State running back and 4th pick in the draft, Ezekiel Elliott, won’t play in an NFL game until September but his jersey his selling off the shelves. Elliott’s #21 Dallas Cowboys jersey is the best selling item in the league.
Former Cleveland Brown QB Johnny Manziel can’t seem to stay out of the news. First there was his odd instagram post announcing he was getting help and would be back soon, then over the weekend in Hawaii, he punched a guest in the face at his friend’s wedding. If he does “come back”, at this rate it looks as if it won’t be on a football field.
Dave Roberts, the Los Angeles Dodger’s manager, created a panic this week by announcing his star pitcher and many would argue the best pitcher in the League, Clayton Kershaw, was perhaps having a setback in his recovery from a herniated disk. Roberts indicated “surgery is more of a possibility” but didn’t say whether that would be this year or next or down the road at some point. Roberts’ comment has created a huge buzz around the League speculating on whether Kershaw will be out for the season. No comments
Winning the Heisman trophy is the greatest honor in all of college football. Seven finalists were announced on Monday. The three frontrunners appear to be Alabama’s running back, Derrick Henry as he’s led the Crimson Tide’s offense with his commanding rushing stats, Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey who broke Barry Sanders all-purpose yards record, and Clemson QB DeShaun Watson with his passing efficiency. Dalvin Cook, Baker Mayfield, Ezekiel Elliot and Keenan Reynolds round out the field. The winner will be announced Saturday night in NY.
The Monday Night Football game between the Washington Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys looked ugly and finished even uglier when the Redskins’ DeSean Jackson fumbled the ball on a punt return leading to Dallas’ only TD. Jackson tried to redeem himself with a late touchdown but Dallas had just enough time left for a field goal to win the game. Cowboys 19, Redskins 16.No comments
Ohio State Wins First Ever National Championship, Ohio Furniture Chain Out Millions In Win, Fox Leaving Broncos
In college football, it was the game we’ve all been waiting for… The National Championship. The game featured #2 Oregon vs. #4 Ohio State. Ohio State was red hot coming into this game (having beaten #1 Alabama), and wanted to prove that they were in fact the best team in the country. Oregon, on the other hand, was finally looking for its first National Championship after so many years of showing they have the flashiest and most creative offense. So how would it play out?
Ohio State got the early advantage, but then Oregon’s offense kicked into gear behind their Heisman Trophy Winning quarterback Marcus Mariotta. The real star of the game, however, outside of Ohio State’s staunch defense, was their running back Ezekiel Elliott. Elliott broke a national championship record, rushing for over 200 yards and four touchdowns. Oregon simply could not stop him. It was a thrilling and meaningful win for the Buckeyes. Not only did they occupy the final playoff spot but due to injuries to their top two quarterbacks, they were starting their third-string QB, Cardale Jones, who played solidly in only his third career start. The Buckeye’s coach, Urban Meyer, won his 3rd National Championship, and Ohio State proved that this year’s college playoff system was a huge success. Ohio State 42, Oregon 20.
In a fun story of the night, a furniture company in Ohio bet big on the Buckeyes. They promised customers that bought at least $1,999 of furniture between December 17th and January 1st a refund if Ohio State won by more than 7 points. This might have sounded like a good idea at the time, but looks like they will be out $1.5 million in free furniture.
Finally, in the NFL, just one day after losing to the Indianapolis Colts, Broncos coach John Fox has decided to step down from the position. Fox and the Broncos mutually agreed to part ways. This was likely because of Fox’s age and health conditions, and everyone is expecting the Broncos to promote offensive coordinator Adam Gase to head coach. Gase, however, is drawing strong interest from the San Francisco 49ers, and it will be curious to see how this plays out. The major question now though… is Peyton Manning coming back next year?
