Tebow Cut, Ohio State Dominates, Miller Puts On Show, BYU Hail Mary

FOOTBALL

58979133In the NFL, when Tim Tebow had a good performance in the final pre-season game, many people were excited, thinking he might actually make the team.  This weekend, however, the Philadelphia Eagles officially cut Tim Tebow from the roster.  His NFL comeback seems officially over.  No one will ever forget his magical one-year run with the Denver Broncos, however.

Screen Shot 2015-09-08 at 7.41.49 AMIn college football, the season kicked off last week.   The big names like Alabama, Oregon, and Notre Dame secured wins, but of course all eyes were on the defending champion the Ohio State Buckeyes.  The team decided to start with the quarterback that won it for them last year, Cardale Jones.  Their former star QB, Braxton Miller, who went down last season with a major injury, made the move to wide receiver.  He put on quite a show Monday, so much so that LeBron James was tweeting about him all night.  It’s going to be another exciting year for the Buckeyes as they go for back-to-back championships.

In the most exciting college game of the weekend, BYU was trailing by 1 point with one play left. BYU needed a hail mary miracle to beat Nebraska. The team got their wish in the form of a long, last second, hail mary bomb that was caught in the end zone.  It was an amazing play. Watch the clip here. In one of the greatest shows of pure joy, the receiver making the big play, Terenn Houk, hugged the ref after catching the TD. A great way to start the season!

Dwight Howard Stopped For Possession Of Gun, Cardale Jones Migraine, Former Nebraska Player In Jail

BASKETBALL

Dwight HowardIn the NBA, Houston Rockets center Dwight Howard is making the wrong kind of headlines again.  He was detained at Houston’s George Bush International Airport for having a gun in his carry-on.  Howard admitted that the gun was his, but reportedly will not face charges.   In Texas, people are allowed to carry a concealed weapon if they have a special type of license.  Howard, however,  doesn’t have that license.

FOOTBALL

In college football, Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones, who helped the team win the National Championship last season, was rushed to the hospital with a massive headache.  Apparently, the headache was caused by a migraine but even though pain in the head is serious.  He’s getting the best care possible, and everyone is hoping for a quick recovery.

Finally, in college football, with the season upon us, a former superstar college athlete is living a terrible life.  Once a stand out running back at Nebraska, Lawrence Phillips had a very bright future.  The Rams picked him to be their running back, but because of his behavioral issues, things didn’t pan out.  He was then sent to 31 years in prison for domestic violence.   And now he will apparently be charged with murdering his cell mate.

Braxton Miller Transition To All Around Athlete, Gamers Drug Testing

FOOTBALL

In college football, there is a logjam at quarterback at Ohio State.  They have last year’s savior Cardale Jones, a back-up who brought the Team to victory, and their former golden boy Braxton Miller (who went down with an injury).  Miller decided to stay at Ohio State instead of transferring (which many considered a questionable decision considering he might have wanted to shine for pro scouts somewhere else).  Miller, however, will now make the transition to wide receiver, and hope to be drafted as an all-around athlete in the pros.  This move may prove wise as Miller will still be in the national spotlight at Ohio State.

c18c9b9d918bbd656c121970f2567f91And some very interesting news out of the video game arena.  This past decade video games have become a “professional” sport.  There are leagues and tournaments popping up all over the world. With the “professional” moniker comes professional rules, meaning that some leagues will begin testing their gamers for performance enhancing drugs.  Drugs are considered a no-no in that world, and players can gain an unfair advantage by taking Adderall.  Many gamers will be shocked by this ruling but the industry wants a fair playing field.

Ohio State Wins First Ever National Championship, Ohio Furniture Chain Out Millions In Win, Fox Leaving Broncos

FOOTBALL

In college football, it was the game we’ve all been waiting for… The National Championship.  The game featured #2 Oregon vs. #4 Ohio State.  Ohio State was red hot coming into this game (having beaten #1 Alabama), and wanted to prove that they were in fact the best team in the country.  Oregon, on the other hand, was finally looking for its first National Championship after so many years of showing they have the flashiest and most creative offense.  So how would it play out?

Ezekiel ElliottOhio State got the early advantage, but then Oregon’s offense kicked into gear behind their Heisman Trophy Winning quarterback Marcus Mariotta.  The real star of the game, however, outside of Ohio State’s staunch defense, was their running back Ezekiel Elliott.  Elliott broke a national championship record, rushing for over 200 yards and four touchdowns. Oregon simply could not stop him. It was a thrilling and meaningful win for the Buckeyes. Not only did they occupy the final playoff spot but due to injuries to their top two quarterbacks, they were starting their third-string QB, Cardale Jones, who played solidly in only his third career start.  The Buckeye’s coach, Urban Meyer, won his 3rd National Championship, and Ohio State proved that this year’s college playoff system was a huge success.  Ohio State 42, Oregon 20.

In a fun story of the night, a furniture company in Ohio bet big on the Buckeyes. They promised customers that bought at least $1,999 of furniture between December 17th and January 1st a refund if Ohio State won by more than 7 points. This might have sounded like a good idea at the time, but looks like they will be out $1.5 million in free furniture.
Finally, in the NFL, just one day after losing to the Indianapolis Colts, Broncos coach John Fox has decided to step down from the position.   Fox and the Broncos mutually agreed to part ways.  This was likely because of Fox’s age and health conditions, and everyone is expecting the Broncos to promote offensive coordinator Adam Gase to head coach.  Gase, however, is drawing strong interest from the San Francisco 49ers, and it will be curious to see how this plays out.  The major question now though… is Peyton Manning coming back next year?

Oregon And Ohio State Will Compete In First Ever College Football Championship

FOOTBALL

It was an exciting evening of football in the semifinals of the first ever college football playoffs. In the early game of the night, Oregon demolished Florida State 59-20. And if the loss wasn’t embarrassing enough, a few Oregon players taunted Florida State’s former Heisman winning quarterback, Jameis Winston with a chant of “No means no” reminding Winston and the nation of a horrible incident from 2012. Winston was accused of sexual assault by a fellow Florida State student but was cleared of any criminal charges by the University.

Cardale JonesJust a few hours later, Ohio State shocked the nation with a surprising upset of top ranked Alabama 42-35. When Ohio State was selected a few weeks ago as one of the four semifinalists, many felt it was a mistake and that the fourth spot should have gone to TCU or Baylor. Ohio State was on its third string quarterback and many felt that his lack of experience would be problematic against coach Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide. Ohio State’s QB Cardale Jones had a shaky start but then came back decisively with his strong arm and powerful legs. Ohio State will now face Oregon and Heisman trophy winning QB Marcus Mariota on January 12th for the chance to be named the first ever College Football National Champion.
