All-NBA List, George & Hayward Down $200 Mill, Von Miller Surprises Employees, A-Rod A Shark

BASKETBALL

The NBA released its list of All-NBA players on Thursday. Indiana Pacers Paul George and Utah Jazz Gordon Hayward were left off the list, potentially costing them a five-year $200 million contract extension. NBA media members select the top 15 players by position to fill the First, Second, and Third All-NBA teams. Each team consists of two guards, two forwards and one center. LeBron James made the First Team again for the 11th time in his career. For a list of the all three Teams, click here.

The NBA playoffs continue this weekend with the Cleveland Cavaliers at the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals Friday 8:30 pm ET. The Cavs lead the series 1-0. The Golden State Warriors, who lead 2-0,  will play Saturday 9:00 pm ET against the San Antonio Spurs.

Retired MVP Alex Rodriguez announced he will join the popular reality show Shark Tank as a guest judge in the fall. A-Rod said, “Ever since I was 10 years old, I sat on my father’s lap [and said] I have two dreams: [One was] to be a Major League Baseball player, but that usually never happens, and two was to be a CEO,”

Teixeira & A-Rod Retiring, Ledecky Dominates, Phelphs Triumphant Return, Williams Sisters Fall

BASEBALL

Big retirement news in baseball. Yankees First baseman Mark Teixeira will retire at the end of season. At 36 years old, Teixeira has battled multiple injuries over the last few years. He’s also in the final year of his $180 million dollar contract so he should be able to enjoy his retirement in style.

New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez also announced his retirement and said his last game will be August 12th. After that, he’ll consult for the team. A-Rod was the #1 pick by the Seattle Mariners in the 1993 draft. Seven years later he signed a 10 year $252 million dollar deal with the Texas Rangers (the largest deal ever in sports). In 2007, Rodriquez signed another record setting 10 year deal with the New York Yankees for $275 million. A-Rod’s legacy as one of baseball’s all-time home run leaders is only marred by his admission and suspension for performance enhancing drugs which kept him off the field for the 2014 season.

OLYMPICS

Katie LedeckyIn some highlights from the Olympics, swimming phenom Katie Ledecky dominated again by beating her own record (with no one even close) to grab the Gold medal in the 400-meter freestyle. Ledecky will be a freshman at Stanford this year. At 31 years old, Michael Phelps looked like his young self and helped bring the gold to his team in the men’s 4×100 relay. This is Phelps 19th Gold medal!

USA didn’t fare so well in tennis over the weekend. Powerhouse doubles partners, Serena and Venus Williams lost in the first round to a Czech team who had never won a match as doubles partners.  The Williams sisters had previously never LOST a match in the Olympics togethers.

Steph Curry Back In Form, ARod May Not Retire

NBA

Steph Curry had two weak games back-to-back. The first was an understandably understated performance against the very good San Antonio Spurs. But the second was an unexpected poor showing in the Golden State Warriors’ win over the mediocre Minnesota Timberwolves. Between the two games, Curry was 10 for 35 on shots, 3 for 21 on deep balls. It was enough to alarm the general public that maybe the greatest player on the court was falling apart.

Turns out, he’s just fine. On Wednesday, the Warriors dominated the Los Angeles Clippers, and Curry was tearing it up. He scored 33 points, making 12 of 23 shots, including 4 of 10 from beyond the arc. The game was the Warriors 51st straight home win. The team is openly chasing the Chicago Bulls ’95/’96 record. They need to win 10 of their remaining 12 games to break the record. Golden State 114, Los Angeles 98.

MLB

A-RodAlex Rodriguez isn’t necessarily done. Despite talks that the New York Yankees player would retire in 2017—spurred mainly by Rodriguez’s own comments that he wouldn’t play anymore after his contract was up—the infielder is now backtracking. “[W]e’ll see what happens,” he told ESPN. The 40-year old has played Major League Baseball for 21 years and is still going strong, hitting 33 home runs in the 2015 season. He has two seasons left on his contract. Baseball starts April 3rd.

A-Rod Celebrates Bday With Homerun, LA May Bid For Olympics, Cardinals Hire First Female Football Coach

BASEBALL

A-RodAlex Rodriguez is making headlines again.  This time, though, it’s nothing negative.  A-Rod had his 40th birthday, and in A-Rod fashion of course, he blasted a home run to celebrate.  It’s amazing that, at 40, A-Rod is still a pretty big factor for the Yankees success this season. Critics are hoping that A-Rod keeps his name clean with no upcoming headlines that he is “juicing” (i.e. using performance enhancing drugs) again.  But, until that happens, A-Rod is enjoying an exciting twilight to his career.   NY Yankees 6, Texas 2.

OLYMPICS

There has been talk of Boston making a run to secure the 2024 Olympics.  Apparently, the Boston public isn’t too happy as they don’t want their tax dollars used to pay for the stadiums and other infrastructure necessary to host an Olympics.  Plus, the Olympic committee was getting tired of Boston changing their blueprint plans.  With that said, it looks like LA might now be making a bid for the Olympics.

FOOTBALL

The Arizona Cardinals made history by hiring the first ever female coach to their coaching staff.  Jen Welter will be joining the squad as an assistant coach for the inside linebackers this summer.  Head coach Bruce Arians said she will make a wonderful addition to the staff. First you had a female head coach guiding the San Antonio Spurs to a summer league championship, and now you have a talented female coach in the NFL.  The future of women in sports looks very bright.

De’Andre Johnson Dismissed From Team After Punching Woman, A-Rod Not An All Star

FOOTBALL

Screen Shot 2015-07-07 at 6.23.34 AMFlorida State QB, De’Andre Johnson will no longer be part of the Team after surveillance video came out showing him punching a woman at a bar. The incident occurred back in June at a bar near campus. Witnesses claim that while waiting to order drinks, the woman cut in front of Johnson. The woman raised her arm and Johnson punched her in the face. Johnson was a highly anticipated freshman recruit and would have been competing for the backup position at QB this season.

BASEBALL

The All-Star Lineup is complete and Alex Rodriguez has been left off the list. Rodriguez was suspended from the game for the 2014 season for his involvement in the Biogenesis drug scandal. His stats have been impressive this year but his past misconduct might have contributed to his omission from the game on July 14th in Cincinnati.
