Mark Cuban Selling To Miriam Adelson, Dolphins Sign Jason Pierre-Paul, Panthers Fired Reich, Ken Griffin In Talks W/Stephen Ross, SI In Hot Water For AI Generated Articles

BASKETBALL

According to reports, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is selling a majority stake in the sports franchise to Miriam Adelson (widow of Sheldon Adelson, the former CEO and chairman of casino company Las Vegas Sands, and currently ranked the 35th richest person in the world) for $3.5 billion. Cuban purchased the team in 2000 for $285 million. The deal allows Cuban to keep shares in the team and control of basketball operations. Cuban has also made news by announcing he’s leaving Shark Tank next seaon, fueling speculation he’s gearing up to run for President.

FOOTBALL

In NFL news, the Miami Dolphins signed linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul (who famously had his right index finger amputed in 2015 after a fireworks accident).

Caroline Panthers fired head coach Frank Reich after only 11 games and a 1-10 start.

Hedge fund manager Ken Griffin is in talks to buy a stake in the Miami Dolphins from owner Stephen Ross. According to reports, Ross is also speaking to Griffin about selling him stakes in the Hard Rock Stadium and the FI Miami Grand Prix.

Sports Illustrated is in hot water after a report revealed that SI might be using AI-generated articles and headshots for some of its articles. SI explained that the articles in question came from a third-party vendor and were assured that all content is from humans. This story is developing and if proven accurate could seriously hurt Sports Illustrated’s image.

DeVito Shines, Brock Purdy Perfect Passer Rating, Flacco To Browns, Buffaloes Losing Stretch, CFP Rankings, UMich/Ohio State On Saturday

FOOTBALL

Here’s some quarterback news from the weekend:

New York Giants’ Tommy DeVito (25-years old) came back from a disappointing week with a big win over the Commanders on Sunday. The Giants season is over at 3-8, but DeVito proved he could be up for the challenges going forward with a 246 yard, three touchdown (no interception) game.

The San Francisco 49ers phenom Brock Purdy threw for a perfect 158.3 passer rating on Sunday in a win over Tampa Bay. He’s the first 49er since Hall of Famer Joe Montana to accomplish that feat.

The Cleveland Browns signed quarterback Joe Flacco to their practice squad after the team lost starting quarterback Deshaun Watson for the season due to a shoulder injury.

In college football news, Colorado coach Deion Sanders started the season with a bang but has fizzled out. The Buffaloes have gone on a 1-7 stretch.

The latest College Football Playoff rankings are out with the top five teams undefeated:  Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan, Washington, and Florida State.  Bitter rivals, Michigan and Ohio State will battle it out on Saturday.

Ravens Win, Burrows Injured, Harbaugh Agrees To Suspension, Northwestern Names Braun Head Coach, Vegas Grand Prix, A’s Move To Vegas, Ohtani, Acuña MVP’s

FOOTBALL

The Baltimore Ravens cruised past the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday Night Football with a 34-20 win, but the big story of the night was Bengals star quarterback Joe Burrow leaving in the second quarter with a right wrist injury. This could be devastating news for Cincinnati if Burrows is out for awhile.

In college football news, Michigan Coach Jim Harbaugh has accepted his three-game suspension (which after last weekend is now only 2 more games). The Big 10 also agreed to end its investigation.

Northwestern made David Braun the permanent head coach, after longtime head coach Pat Fitzgerald was fired for hazing allegations. Braun has taken the team to a 5-5 this season, after the team went 1-11 last year.

FORMULA ONE

Las Vegas is hosting the Vegas Grand Prix this weekend, but other than a star-studded opening ceremony featuring John Legend, ticket sales are lower than expected. Part of the issue could be that Max Verstappen has already clinched the championship.

BASEBALL

Speaking of Vegas, the Oakland A’s have been given the go-ahead by Major League Baseball to move to Vegas. The new stadium won’t be finished until 2028 though.

To no one’s surprise, LA Angels superstar two-way player Shohei Ohtani was named American League MVP, and Atlanta Braves right fielder Ronald Acuña Jr. won the National League MVP award.

Jimbo Fired, Harbaugh Suspension, Five NFL Teams Win By Field Goal In Final Play

FOOTBALL

In college news, Texas A&M fired head coach Jimbo Fisher with a reported buyout of $76 million, the highest in college sports history. And, this is after he had signed a 10-year contract extension in 2021 worth $95 million guaranteed.

At Michigan, head coach Jim Harbaugh has been suspended for three games (can’t be on the field during the game but can still coach practices) for the sign-stealing scandal. Harbaugh served the first of the three-game suspension for “violation of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Policy” this past weekend in a big win over Penn State. UMich 24, Penn State 15

In the NFL, it was a crazy Sunday where five teams (Browns, Teans, Cardinals, Lions and Seahawks) all won their games by a field goal in the final play.

Jones ACL, Bengals 4th Straight Win W/Burrow, Chiefs Trick Play, C.J. Stroud’s Rookie-Record, Big Ten Sends Michigan Notice

FOOTBALL

Recap of NFL games from the weekend:

One of the biggest stories of the weekend (biggest injury) was the NY Giants quarterback Daniel Jones tearing what appears to be his ACL, which will sideline him for the rest of the season. Unfortunately for the team, Jones had just come back from a neck injury.

The Cincinnati Bengals recorded their 4th straight win thanks to a solid performance from quarterback Joe Burrow. Bengals 24, Bills 18.

The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Miami Dolphins in Germany Sunday morning, thanks in part to a trick play late in the first half. The Chiefs Mike Edwards recovered the ball from Tyreek Hill and lateraled the ball to Bryan Cook who ran it in for a 59-yard touchdown.

The #2 pick in the NFL draft, Houston Texans C.J. Stroud (Ohio State) threw for a rookie-record 470 yards in a 39-37 win over the Buccaneers. Stroud has been having an amazing year with 14 touchdowns and only one interception.

In college football, the Big Ten sent a formal notice of potential disciplinary action to the Michigan athletics department over the football team’s alleged illegal sign-stealing. We’ll know in the next couple of days what this means for coach Jim Harbaugh and the team.

Rangers Up 2-1 In World Series, Harden Goes To Clippers, NBA Player Participation Policy

BASEBALL

The World Series enters game 4 with the Texas Rangers up 2-1 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Rangers are two games away from a title.

BASKETBALL

After months of speculation about where free agent James Harden would land, the Philadelphia 76ers announced they are trading Harden to the Los Angeles Clippers for a combination of first-round, and second-round picks.

In other NBA news, the season has only just begun, but there is already controversy over the Player Participation Policy which says a player only qualifies for major awards if he plays 65 games (out of an 82-game schedule). Fans were upset when they would pay to attend a game and their favorite players decided to take the night off to rest up. This was an issue for National TV broadcasts as well.

Big stars have already started missing games in seeming protest against the new rules. It will be interesting to see how this plays out for the rest of the season.
