Serena Defeats #2 Ranked Kontaveit, Cameron Smith Joins LIV, Garoppolo Staying With Niners

TENNIS

Serena Williams pulled out an exciting win Wednesday night against #2 ranked Anett Kontaveit, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-2. Serena will turn 41 later this month and hasn’t played many matches this year, but ESPN’s Chris Evert stated what we’re all thinking, “She’s Serena. Anything is possible.” After the match, Serena was asked how she was able to defeat the #2 player in the world and she said,

“Well … I’m a pretty good player. This is what I do best. I love a challenge. I love rising to a challenge. I haven’t played many matches, but I’ve been practicing really well, and my last few matches, it just wasn’t coming together.” She went on to say, “Honestly, I’m just looking at it as a bonus. I don’t have anything to prove. I don’t have anything to win. And I have absolutely nothing to lose. I never get to play like this, since ’98, really. Literally, I’ve had an ‘X’ on my back since ’99. So, it’s kind of fun, and I really just enjoy coming out and enjoying it, and it’s been a long time since I’ve been able to do that.”

Serena plays again at 7:00 pm ET Thursday night with her sister Venus (who lost her first round in singles). They’ll attempt to win their 15th Grand Slam doubles title.
