In one of the biggest upsets in the history of college basketball, #1 ranked Duke lost to unranked Stephen F. Austin on a last-second layup. Before the loss, Duke had won 150 consecutive nonconference home games, and for the first time since 1983, Duke lost to an unranked mid-major team. SFA 85, Duke 83

In more college news, the new College Football Playoff rankings were announced Tuesday night, and Ohio State claims the #1 spot over LSU. Clemson and Georgia round out the top 4, while Alabama held on at #5. There are still a few big games left that could disrupt the rankings including an important Ohio State vs Michigan matchup on Saturday.

FOOTBALL

Baltimore Ravens’ quarterback Lamar Jackson continues to shine. With another historic feat (the first player to throw for five touchdowns on a Monday Night Football debut), Jackson led his Ravens to a crushing 45-6 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Jackson has avoided throwing an interception for the 9th time this season and thrown multiple touchdowns for the 6th time.

BASKETBALL

Portland Trailblazers’ Carmelo Anthony credited his wife, La La Anthony, for his season-best 25 points in his team’s 117-94 win over the Chicago Bulls. He said his wife kept him going by saying, “Don’t do it, don’t think about it, don’t do it, don’t you let that thought creep into your head. So, she was a major, major part of why I’m here today.”

For the first time in his career, Philadelphia 76ers’ Joel Embiid was held scoreless in a 101-96 loss to the Toronto Raptors. Ben Simmons handed out some reassuring words to his teammate saying,  “Everyone has down games. No one is Superman. It happened tonight to Jo, but he’s going to be good.”

The San Francisco 49ers’ defense continued to shine in a big win over the Green Bay Packers, improving to 10-1 for the first time since 1997. The Niners’ defense has been getting all the attention this season, but thanks to quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s leadership, the offense really stepped up. After a few plays into the game, tight end George Kittle said Jimmy got the offense together and said, “Hey, you gotta play with intensity. Our defense is playing their asses off and we just have to take advantage of the opportunities they’re giving us.” San Francisco 37, Green Bay 8

Every week there seems to be a major complaint about officiating. This week, everyone is talking about the tripping penalty called on Dallas Cowboys’ Travis Frederick on a 3rd and 1, which could have led to a game-winning drive. Instead, the penalty led to a 3rd-and-11, and the Cowboys lost momentum. With the 13-9 loss to the New England Patriots, the Cowboys are 6-5 on the season.

Quarterback Dwayne Haskins was so excited for his first win as a starter with the Washington Redskins, he missed the final play of the game. Instead of taking the field with a few seconds left on the clock to seal the team’s win, Haskins was taking a selfie with a fan. According to Haskins, “I was so hype, I think I broke a water bottle. I look up and we’re in victory (formation). I thought the game was over with already. But I’ll get it next time.” Washington Redskins 19, Detroit Lions 16

The Houston Texans beat the Indianapolis Colts in an important AFC South matchup thanks to Texans’ receiver DeAndre Hopkins’ two touchdowns, and the return of receiver Will Fuller, who added 140 yards on seven catches. Hopkins’ mother lost her vision 17 years ago and always sits in the same spot at games. It was emotional seeing Hopkins hand her the footballs after his touchdowns. Texans 20, Colts 17

Cleveland Browns’ defensive end Myles Garrett lost his appeal to revoke his suspension for hitting Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback Mason Rudolph with his helmet. In the appeal, Garrett claimed that Rudolph used racial slurs to provoke him. Garrett stated, “I know what I heard. Whether my opponent’s comment was born out of frustration or ignorance, I cannot say. But his actions do not excuse my lack of restraint in the moment, and I truly regret the impact this has had on the league, the Browns and our devoted fans.”

BOXING

Floyd Mayweather Jr. announced he’s coming out of retirement. At 50-0, Mayweather is currently undefeated, but hasn’t boxed since August of 2017 when he beat Conor McGregor, surpassing Rocky Marciano’s 49-0 victories. Mayweather posted a photo on Instagram saying, “Coming out of retirement in 2020”.

Everyone is talking about the Philadelphia 76ers’ Ben Simmons hitting a 3-pointer in Wednesday night’s win over the New York Knicks. The reason it’s such a big deal is that he hasn’t hit a 3-pointer since 2015 when he was in college (that’s three seasons, 193 games and 18 missed shots).

Kawhi Leonard and Paul George finally took the court together on Wednesday night for the LA Clippers in an overtime win vs the Boston Celtics. The two superstars didn’t have a great game, but Clippers’ coach Doc Rivers encapsulated the feeling of the fans and the players after the game when he said, “That was an ugly win. But it was beautiful.”

BASKETBALL

LeBron James made history…again. After his 25 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in a win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, LeBron became the first player in NBA history to record a triple-double against all 30 teams. LeBron claimed he had no idea he had achieved this feat until his coach congratulated him.

Records aside, the best part of the Lakers game was watching Venus Williams, James Corden and Rob Gronkowski appearing with the Lakers’ dancers during halftime.

In other NBA news, Carmelo Anthony took to the court with his new team, the Portland Trailblazers. In a 115-104 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans, Anthony hit a 3-pointer for the Trailblazers’ first points of the game, but then missed his next 10 of 14 shots finishing with only 10 points for the night.

Thanks to four interceptions on the part of quarterback Philip Rivers, the Los Angeles Chargers lost to the Kansas City Chiefs on a Monday night football game played in Mexico City. The 38-year old Rivers now has 13 interceptions and 15 turnovers this year. With the loss, the Chargers are 4-7 and unlikely to make the playoffs. Chiefs 24, Chargers 17

BASEBALL

To no one’s surprise, Derek Jeter is included in Major League Baseball’s list of  players for possible induction in the 2020 Hall of Fame. The newly released ballot listed 32 names including 18 newcomers. For a list of all names click here. We’ll know the new class of inductees on January 21st.

FOOTBALL

In some upsetting college football news, Alabama star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is out for the season. During the Crimson Tide’s 38-7 blowout win over Mississippi State on Saturday, Tua disclocated his hip and is scheduled to have hip surgery on Monday. In NFL news, Lamar Jackson became the first player in Baltimore Ravens’ history to deliver four or more touchdown passes in multiple games. On Sunday, in a rout agains the Houston Texans, Jackson threw four touchdown passes, and in the season opener against Miami, he threw five touchdown passes. Ravens 41, Houston 7

New York Jets’ quarterback Sam Darnold got out of his interception funk and threw for a career-high four touchdowns, giving the team a much-needed 34-17 win over the Washington Redskins.

Colin Kaepernick worked out in front of 8 NFL teams on Saturday but created some controversy when he changed the venue at the last minute. Twenty-five teams were supposed to attend at the original location. The teams in attendance were the Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs, New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, Detroit Lions, Washington Redskins, and Tennessee Titans. No word on whether any teams are interested in signing him.

With just a few seconds left in Thursday night’s matchup between the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers, Browns’ defensive end Myles Garrett ripped off Steelers’ quarterback Mason Rudolph’s helmet and struck him in the head. Fortunately, Rudolph was ok, but the hit was deliberate and violent and has shocked the sports world. The NFL hasn’t handed down a verdict on the incident yet, but the punishment will likely be very severe as this hit was so violent it could have permanently ended Rudolph’s career or worse. Garrett was the former #1 pick by the Browns in 2017. According to reports, Carmelo Anthony has signed a non-guaranteed contract with the Portland Trail Blazers. Anthony has been out of basketball for a year (and only played 10 games last season with the Houston Rockets).

Mets’ pitcher Jacob deGrom won his second straight National League Cy Young Award, joining  Max Scherzer, Clayton Keyshawn, Tim Lincecum and Randye Johnson as the only back-to-back winners in the past century.

In an amusing moment during the LA Clippers/Houston Rockets game Wednesday night, Clippers’ coach Doc Rivers was ejected for arguing with the ref, while his son, Rockets’ guard Austin Rivers, laughed and encouraged the crowd to cheer.
