49ers Lose 1st Game, Alonso & Alvarez Win Rookies Of Year

FOOTBALL

The Seattle Seahawks handed the San Francisco 49ers their first loss of the season on Monday night. With a strong defense that kept harassing SF quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and a solid showing by Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, Seattle gained the final three-point lead with a 42-yard field goal in the final seconds of overtime. With the Niners’ 27-24 loss, there are now no undefeated teams left in the NFL this season, and the perfect record set by the 1972 Miami Dolphins remains unchallenged.

BASEBALL

The New York Mets’ Pete Alonso won the National League Rookie of the Year thanks to his rookie record 53 home runs. He also recorded 120 RBI’s (the seventh most for a rookie). Even though he started his season in Triple-A, Houston Astros’ Yordan Alvarez made his mark quickly and won the American League Rookie of the Year.
