Nationals Heading To World Series, Astros Take 2-1 Lead, Ramsey To Rams, HS Soccer Player Breaks Record

BASEBALL

The Washington Nationals swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Championship Series and are heading to the franchise’s first World Series. Eighty-six years ago Washington clinched a spot in the World Series, but back then the Team was called the Senators, and these original Senators lost to the New York Giants. If you haven’t seen it yet, check out The Nationals’ Gerardo Parra heading to the plate while the entire stadium claps and sings to his walk-up song “Baby Shark. He’s not the first player to feature the song (Elvis Andrus of the Texas Rangers uses it as well), but the children’s tune really took off thanks to Parra.

In the American League Championship Series, the Houston Astros took a 2-1 lead over the New York Yankees. Game 4 is on Wednesday night.

FOOTBALL

The Jacksonville Jaguars traded cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the Los Angeles Rams for 3 draft picks. Ramsey had one more year left on his contract with the Jags, but made it clear (showed up to training camp in an armored bank truck) he wanted more money.

SOCCER

Congratulations to high school soccer player Chloe Delyser who broke the all-time national high school girls soccer scoring record.  With her 317th career goal, Chloe made history.

Packers Edge Lions With Frustrating Officiating, Nationals Up 3-0

FOOTBALL

The Green Bay Packers narrowly beat the Detroit Lions Monday night, but all anyone is speaking about is the officiating, specifically the call on the Lions’ Trey Flowers for illegal use of hands.  Former players, sportscasters, and legends of the game weighed in with their frustrations. Hall of Famer Barry Sanders tweeted, “That is sickening… the @NFL needs to look at a way to prevent that from happening. Two phantom hands to the face calls really hurts us tonight. Yes, we could have scored TDs, but @Lions played too well to have the game end this way.” Packers 23, Lions 22

BASEBALL

With a big win on Monday night, the Washington Nationals are up 3-0 over the St. Louis Cardinals and one win away from heading to the World Series for their first appearance in 86 years.

Correa Saves Day, Nationals 2-0, 49ers 5-0, Darnold Back & Jets Win, Miami Zoo More Than Dolphin Tckt

BASEBALL

The Houston Astros’ Carlos Correa saved the team from falling 0-2 to the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series with his walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th inning. After a 3-2 victory, the Astros will head to New York for Game 3 on Tuesday.

The Washington Nationals hold a steady 2-0 lead over the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Championship Series thanks in no small part to pitcher Max Scherzer’s dominant performance striking out 11 hitters in a Game 2 victory. The Cardinals now head to Washington for Game 3 on Monday night.

FOOTBALL

The San Francisco 49ers are taking the League by storm this season thanks in part to their dominant defense. With a big win over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, the Niners are now 5-0. San Francisco 20, Los Angeles 7

While the Niners recorded their 5th victory, the New York Jets (with quarterback Sam Darnold back after suffering a bout of mononucleosis) finally tasted their first win of the season by beating the Dallas Cowboys. Cowboys have now lost three straight games. New York 24, Dallas 22

In an embarrassing stat, Fox Sports 640 posted ticket prices for entertainment options in the Miami area and found that a trip to the Miami Zoo ($23) cost $7 more than a ticket to see the Dolphins play the Washington Redskins on Sunday.  The Redskins grabbed a 17-16 win in the matchup between these two formerly winless teams.

Pats D Unstoppable, Setting Record Straight On Kaepernick, 4 Teams Left MLB Playoffs

FOOTBALL

The New England Patriots defense is unstoppable. In a Thursday night matchup with the New York Giants, the Pats D picked off Giants’ rookie quarterback Daniel Jones three times, had one fumble recovery, one blocked punt, one sack, and two touchdowns for a decisive 35-14 win. In an unbelievable stat, cited by The Ringer, “the Patriots defense and special teams is averaging more points than all but two running backs (McCaffrey and Dalvin Cook), every single receiver, every single tight end, and all but six quarterbacks.”

The Colin Kaepernick story needs a reset according to his agent Jeff Nalley.  Nalley posted a two-page document entitled”Facts to Address the False Narratives Regarding Colin Kaepernick” to set the record straight about why all 32 NFL teams still haven’t signed the 31-year old Kaepernick who “has the same skill set that many of the young mobile quarterbacks flourishing in the NFL right now.”

BASEBALL

We’re down to the final four teams in the Major League Playoffs. The National Leauge Championship kicks off on Friday in St. Louis with the St. Louis Cardinals facing the Washington Nationals. In the American League, the Houston Astros face the New York Yankees on Saturday in Houston.

Nationals Stun Dodgers And Advance To NLCS, Cardinals Advance By Making History, Cruz & AOC On Same Page

BASEBALL

The Washington Nationals stunned the top-seeded Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5 on Wednesday night and advance to the National League Championship Series. Howie Kendrick ignited the team with his grand slam in the top of the 10th inning for a 7-3 victory. This will be the first time the Nationals have advanced past the first round in their last five tries (2012, 2014, 2016, and 2017).

The St. Louis Cardinals made history in their blowout win over the Atlanta Braves in game five of the National League Division Series. The Cardinals scored 10 runs in the first inning of the game becoming the first team in MLB history to score 10 runs in the first inning of a postseason game.

The Nationals will play the Cardinals on Friday in game 1 of the NLCS at 8:08 pm.

BASKETBALL

The fallout from Houston Rockets’ GM Daryl Morey supporting anti-government protestors in Hong Kong has not subsided. The LA Lakers and the Brooklyn Nets played a preseason game in Shanghai on Thursday, but there was none of the usual media hype. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver tried to make the situation tenable saying, “I think tolerance for differing societies’ approaches, tolerance for differing points of view and the ability to listen. Certainly I don’t come here, either as the commissioner of the NBA or as an American, to tell others how they should run their governments.” A group of bipartisan Members of Congress including Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz and New York’s Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sent a letter to Silver urging the NBA to show “courage and integrity” in standing up to the Chinese government.

Jay Gruden Fired, Colts O-Line Keeps Mahomes Off Field, Prescott Says We Sniffed Ourselves Too Much, McCaffey Exciting, Joe Tsai Says Tweet Damaging

FOOTBALL

After an 0-5 start to the season, the Washington Redskins fired Jay Gruden as Head Coach. In his career with the Redskins, he’s gone 35-49-1 in 6 seasons with only 1 playoff appearance in 2015. Bill Callahan will take over as interim Head Coach.

In some other NFL weekend highlights, the Indianapolis Colts offensive line let quarterback Jacoby Brissett do his thing and kept Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes off the field handing the Chiefs their first loss of the season.  Colts 19, Chiefs 13

The Dallas Cowboys fought valiantly against the Green Bay Packers, but after a missed field goal with a minute left to play, they now have their second straight loss following a 3-0 start to the season. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott threw three interceptions and blamed the team’s arrogance for the loss. In his post-game press conference, he said: “All I could say that sure we might’ve sniffed ourselves a little bit too much.” Packers 34, Cowboys 24

One of the most exciting players in the NFL right now is the Carolina Panthers’ running back Christian McCaffrey. In a 34-27 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, McCaffrey has three touchdowns and leads the league with 866 yards from scrimmage.

BASKETBALL

The NBA has been trying to develop a close relationship with China for many years and even has an NBA office in China. The league is not looking to foster any controversies which is why Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey’s recently deleted tweet (“Fight for Freedom. Stand with Hong Kong.”) supporting the protesters has caused an uproar. Nets owner and co-founder of Chinese company Alibaba, Joe Tsai, took to Facebook to point out how damaging the tweet was and said that Morey “was not as well informed as he should have been. But the hurt that this incident has caused will take a long time to repair.”

Braves Blame Acuña Jr. On Loss, Dodgers Cruise To Victory, Russell Wilson’s 4 TD’s, SI Lays Off Staff

BASEBALL

In a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals in the first game of the National League Division Series, the Atlanta Braves blamed center fielder Ronald Acuña Jr. for not hustling. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Acuña Jr. hit a high fly ball, but instead of running full force to land on second base, he held his bat while looking at the ball and casually strutted to first. Cardinals 7, Braves 6

In the other NLDS matchup, the Los Angeles Dodgers cruised to an easy first game win over the Washington Nationals. Dodgers 6, Nationals 0

FOOTBALL

In Thursday night football, the Seattle Seahawks faced tough competition against the Los Angeles Rams, but thanks to an inspired game by Seahawks’ quarterback Russell Wilson, who went 17-23, 268 yards and 4 touchdowns, Seattle held on for a big win. Seahawks 30, Rams 29

OTHER

Sports Illustrated’s management laid off 35-40% of the editorial staff.  Authentic Brands Group purchased Sports Illustrated for $110 million in May and leased its media operations to Seattle start-up Maven. Maven is expected to recruit freelancers and bloggers to replace salaried SI writers. Staffers of the iconic magazine claim the job losses are worse than expected and morale is low.

Rays Beat A’s In ALDS, Best Of Five Division Series Begins, Lonzo And LaVar Ball Sued

BASEBALL

In the American League wild-card game, the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Oakland A’s and advance to take on the top-seeded Houston Astros in the American League Division Series. The best-of-five Division Series begins on October 3rd with the  National League (Cardinals at Braves and Nationals at Dodgers) followed by the American League (Rays at Astros and Twins at Yankees) on October 4th.

BASKETBALL

Six months ago, Lonzo Ball (New Orleans Pelicans) sued his former Big Baller Brand (BBB) business partner, Alan Foster, for $2 million. The tables are now turned and Foster is countersuing Lonzo and his father LaVar for “fraudulent concealment and breach of contract”. According to the filing, LaVar embezzled more than $2.5 million. Foster claims, “LaVar approached Alan and asked for his business guidance on how to monopolize and gain fortune and fame from the names and likenesses of his three sons. In response, Alan suggested that the two men brand the ‘Ball’ family name in order to create basketball and entertainment-related businesses. LaVar loved Alan’s idea and wanted to make sure that he was the biggest star in the family, notwithstanding the fact that he was broke, had no savings, poor credit and zero business acumen.”

Nationals To Face Dodgers In NLDS, Arch Manning Talented, Richard Sherman Hopes NCAA Destroyed

BASEBALL

The Washington Nationals did not have a promising start to their season, but with their wild card win over the Milwaukee Brewers, they will now face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series starting on Thursday.

FOOTBALL

Peyton’s retired, Eli’s been benched, but looks like we’ll see another Manning phenomenon in a few years. Archie and Olivia Manning’s grandson (Cooper’s son Arch), a 6-1 freshman in high school, is already making a name for himself and getting attention from both Eli’s and Peyton’s alma maters (Ole Miss and Tennessee).  According to granddad Archie, Arch is not talking to anyone yet. “Our theme is, ‘Let’s let Arch be a freshman.”

California’s recently signed bill allowing college athletes to be paid endorsements is getting the thumbs up from San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman. Sherman, who played at Stanford, said, “I hope it destroys the NCAA in general because I think it’s corrupt and it’s a bunch of people taking advantage of kids, and doing it under a mask of ‘fair play.” The Golden State Warriors’ Draymond Green also criticized the NCAAA and called the organization a “dictatorship.”

Week 4 NFL-Jones Continues To Impress, Minshew Mania, Newsom’s Athlete Bill, MLB Postseason

FOOTBALL

After week 4 of the NFL, the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs are unbeaten while the Cincinnati Bengals can’t win a game. The New York Giants’ rookie quarterback Daniel Jones continues to impress with a big win over the Washington Redskins. And, with Minshew Mania (Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Gardiner Minshew II) energizing the team, the Jags defeated the Broncos for a 2-2 on the season.

In college football, USA Today re-ranked the top five teams, and Alabama grabbed the #1 slot while Ohio State took #2. Clemson dropped from #1 to #3 after a rough game against North Carolina. They eked out a win, but it wasn’t pretty. LSU and Georgia take the #4 and #5 spots.

In other college news, California Governor Gavin Newsom introduced a new bill to allow college athletes to hire agents in order to generate money from endorsements. The controversial law goes against the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s belief that college athletes should “earn a degree, not money, for playing sports”.  Newsom told The New York Times the law is “a big move to expose the farce and to challenge a system that is outsized in its capacity to push back.” The law will take effect in 2023.
