Simmons Agrees To Max Extension, Cavs Waive Smith, Clarke MVP Summer League, Cuban Ironically Fined, Open In N. Ireland

BASKETBALL

In some NBA off-season news, Ben Simmons agreed to a 5 year $170 million max extension with the Philadelphia 76ers. Securing Simmons, the 2017-18 rookie of the year, gives the 76ers a great lineup with newly signed Al Horford, Joel Embiid, Tobias Harris and Josh Richardson.

The Cleveland Cavaliers waived JR Smith after failing to find a trade option for him. As of now, it’s unclear where the free agent will land.

The NBA Summer League is over and the Memphis Grizzlies’ Brandon Clarke was named the MVP. Clarke, the #21st overall pick in the NBA draft,  is the fourth Grizzlie in the past seven Summer Leagues to win the award.

The NBA fined Dallas Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban $50,000 for leaking information during a Board of Governors meeting. The irony, according to Cuban, is that the person (reportedly Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadivé) leaked the incident but won’t get fined for that infraction. Cuban told ESPN, “I appreciate the irony of your reporting on a fine that someone should, but won’t, get fined for leaking to you.”

GOLF

Golf’s final major championship takes place this week at Royal Portrush Golf Club. The tournament is hosted in the United Kingdom, and for the first time in 68 years, the Open will be in Northern Ireland.
