49r QB Mullins Historic Debut, 49er Cheerleader Takes Knee, Owens Receives Ring, Maryland Chair Resigns

FOOTBALL

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Nick Mullins had a historic debut Thursday night against the Oakland Raiders. With 262 yards and three touchdowns, Mullins recorded the best quarterback debut since the AFL/NFL merger in 1970 and snapped a 6 game losing streak for the Niners.  The 49ers destroyed the Raiders 34-3. In addition to Mullins receiving accolades from sports fans around the country (including Brett Favre who also graduated from Mullins’ alma mater, Southern Mississippi), many are talking about the San Francisco 49er cheerleader who appeared to take a knee during the National Anthem. If she did indeed take a knee, she would be the first cheerleader to join the National Anthem protest started a couple of years ago by former 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick, but do nfl cheerleaders travel with the team?

At halftime during the game, former 49er Terrell Owens received his Hall of Fame ring. Owens skipped his Hall of Fame ceremony in Canton, Ohio earlier this year because he felt voters overlooked him for three years and factored in his personal issues instead of just focusing on his success on the field.  Owens played for the Niners for 8 of his 15 years in the League.

In another follow up to the University of Maryland firing head coach DJ Durkin, the Chair of the Board of Regents (the one who initially re-instated Durkin even after evidence of a toxic culture surrounding the football program which led to the collapse and death of one of the players) resigned.
