Vinatieri Breaks Record, Pats On Track, Rodgers Upset But Has Scotch, 49ers Tough Start, Thomas Obscene Gesture, Europe Wins Ryder Cup

FOOTBALL

A few highlights from the NFL this weekend.

Congratulations to Indianapolis Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri who kicked his 566th then 567th field goal to became the NFL’s all-time leader in field goals (breaking a tie with Morton Anderson). At 45 years old, future Hall of Famer Vinatieri has four Super Bowl rings (three with the Patriots and one with the Colts).

New England Patriots got back on track in their big win over the Miami Dolphins. The Patriots avoided starting the season with a three-game deficit, something that hasn’t happened since 2001 while handing the Dolphins their first loss of the season. Patriots 38, Dolphins 7.

The Green Bay Packers shut out the Buffalo Bills 22-0 but after the game quarterback Aaron Rodgers expressed concern about his team saying “We were championship defensive level and non-playoff team offensive level”. He did say he was happy though and would have a scotch or two when he got home.

The San Francisco 49ers have had a tough start with their quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo out for the season with a knee injury. As of Sunday, left tackle Joe Staley and wide receiver Dante Pettis also suffered knee injuries. Both left the game in the first half and did not return for the rest of the game, but no word yet on the seriousness of the injuries. Chargers 29, 49ers 27

Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas fractured his leg and will likely end his career in Seattle. As he was carted off the field he appeared to flip off the Seahawks sideline. The gesture was an apparent statement on how the organization has handled his contract.

GOLF

Europe won the Ryder Cup for the sixth straight time on its own turf. Since 1993, the US has remained winless when playing in Europe. The US entered the tournament with 12 players ranked in the top 25 in the world so understandably felt confident going into the tournament. Tiger Woods expressed his disappointment in himself saying, “We didn’t execute like we had planned and wanted to. I went 0-4. Obviously very disappointing. Those are four points that aren’t going towards our side. It’s going towards their side.”
