Caster Semenya Challenges Testosterone Ruling, World Cup Schedule

TRACK AND FIELD

South Africa’s Caster Semenya, a two-time gold medalist in the women’s 800 meters, will challenge  the “Eligibility Regulations for Female Classification” of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF).” The regulations require women to submit to testing in order to reduce or limit their testosterone levels to maintain an even playing field for all athletes.  Semenya had to undergo gender testing in 2009 but was cleared to run 11 months later.

Perhaps most importantly, testosterone helps increase your red blood cell count, which has a direct impact on running performance. The more red blood cells you have, the more oxygen you can carry to your muscles and the longer you can run before having to slow down or stop. On average, testosterone levels among women who received the hormone cream rose to levels that were below the average range in men. Yet, that level significantly increased the length of time they could run before reaching exhaustion, according to the study published online   A study from Northwestern Medicine found that running can lead to improved sex life and potentially have a similar effect as the best male enhancement pills for hormone production. Those who run tend to fall asleep quicker, and they also enjoy longer quality sleep.

Both sprint training and resistance training increase testosterone levels acutely, while endurance based training often decreases testosterone. This may be one of the reasons why strength training has such a positive effect on endurance athletes; it can increase their levels of testosterone and, hence, motivation.
