Northwestern Beats Vandy And Gets First Tournament Win Ever

BASKETBALL

Northwestern grabbed the spotlight on day 1 of the NCAA tournament. With just seconds left and Vanderbilt ahead 66-65, Vanderbilt’s Matthew Fisher-Davis thought Vanderbilt was one point behind so fouled Northwestern’s best shooter, Bryant McIntosh who easily made his next two foul shots leading to a 68-66. Not only was this Northwestern’s first tournament appearance, but now it’s first ever tournament win. Not much excitement th

HOCKEY

The US Women’s Hockey Team has decided to boycott the World Championships taking place March 31st-April 7th in Michigan due to a wage dispute over compensation and support equal to the mens’ team. The women currently make $1000 per month for 6 months leading up to the Olympic Games, so esssentially just $6000 for 4 years, as they need to train during the 4 years between Olympic Games. USA Hockey responded to the boycott and issued a statement expressing their commitment to the team and an increase in pay, however the players expressed through their lawyers that the USA Hockey statement was “dishonest” and they are still in dispute.

Steak For NKU Undergrads If Beat Kentucky, Curry’s 29 Points On 29th Bday, Muirfield Admits Women

BASKETBALL

The undergrads at the University of Northern Kentucky (ranked #15 in the NCAA tournament) have an extra incentive to beat #2 ranked Kentucky. The owner of a number of restaurants offered up free steak dinners to the NKU undergrads if the team beats Kentucky in the first round.  “Yes, this could get very expensive,” Ruby said,  “But it’s important to me to show support to our hometown organizations. NKU is a real asset to the community as they continue to produce extraordinary talented leaders for our region and beyond.”

In the NBA, the Golden State Warriors snapped their losing streak with a late-game surge against the Philadelphia 76ers. Draymond Green pulled out all the stops with some impressive defense, and Steph Curry found his rhythm scoring 29 points on his 29th birthday.

GOLF

The World’s oldest golf club (after 273 years) voted to admit women. Last year Muirfield voted to keep the Club women free, but voted again this year and the measure passed. Now the Scottish Club will again be eligible to host the British Open. After last year’s vote, the Club was taken off the rotation.

Tournament Bracket Set For March Madness

BASKETBALL

March Madness officially begins tomorrow. The field for the tournament (which is a single elimination tournament featuring the best college basketball teams) was decided on Sunday with 68 teams competing in the men’s tournament and 64 in the women’s. 32 teams automatically got bids to the tournament based on their conference wins, and the rest were selected on Sunday. Team seeds were also announced. In the men’s bracket, Villanova, Kansas, Gonzaga, North Carolina, are ranked #1 in the East, Midwest, West and South respectively. The best way to embrace the tournament hype, which will dominate the next three weeks until the championship on April 3rd, is to fill in a bracket and enjoy the competition. Here’s a printable bracket. There’s always a “cinderella” team, so don’t just pick the highest ranked teams to win.

Garoppolo’s Instagram Prank, Texans Release Osweiler, Cutler Gone, Romo Trade

FOOTBALL

Jimmy Garoppolo’s instagram feed has been blowing up after a post implied he was leaving the New England Patriots. Turns out the post was a prank and Garoppolo isn’t necessarily leaving.

The Houston Texans released their QB Brock Osweiler (and a 2017 6th round draft pick and a 2018 2nd round pick) in exchange for a 2017 4th round pick from the Cleveland Browns. Osweiler has a $16 million guaranteed salary, so getting rid of him frees up cap space. The Browns may flip Osweiler again (and gain another draft pick) to another team needing a backup QB. Bottom line is Osweiler shouldn’t unpack anytime soon.

In other free agency moves, the Chicago Bears released QB Jay Cutler, and the New York Jets seem interested in picking him up.

It looks as if the Dallas Cowboys will now trade QB Tony Romo instead of releasing him. The newly QB-free Houston Texans could be potential buyers.

Tony Romo Leaving Cowboys, Brandon Marshall Heading Across Town

FOOTBALL

After 14 years with the Dallas Cowboys, looks like QB Tony Romo will be moving on. Romo suffered from injuries in the last few years. In 2013, Romo underwent two back surgeries, then two years later broke his collarbone, and finally this year in spring training hurt his back again. Dak Prescott, a fourth round pick, replaced Romo as the starter and led the team to a 13-3 record while also garnering offensive rookie of the year honors. Romo leaves the Cowboys as the all-time leader in touchdowns and passing yards. No word yet where Romo will end up, but many speculate he’ll be either a Denver Bronco or Houston Texan next year.

In other football news, wide receiver Brandon Marshall is leaving the NY Jets and heading across town to join the NY Giants. Giants’ QB Eli Manning now has three effective targets at wide receiver (including Odell Beckham Jr and Sterling Shephard) and a veteran voice of reason in the locker room.

Many free agent deals are in the works, but nothing will be guaranteed until 4;00 today when the new league year officially begins.

Dirk Nowitzki Scores 30,000th, Westbrook’s 58 Points Not Enough, LeBron Jr’s Highlights

BASKETBALL

38 year old Dallas Mavericks’ Dirk Nowitzki joined an exclusive group Tuesday night by scoring his 30,000th point in the NBA. Dirk now joins only 5 other players to accomplish this feat: Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Karl Malone. Many former and current NBA players took to social media to congratulate Dirk on this historic accomplishment. And, Commissioner Adam Silver wrote, “Throughout his 19 seasons with the Mavericks, Dirk has been a model player and terrific ambassador for our game. The latest accomplishment further establishes his legacy as one of the NBA’s greatest players.”

OKC’s Russell Westbrook went on a tear Tuesday night with a career high 58 points against the Portland Trailblazers, but shockingly it wasn’t enough for the Team to pull out a win. Portland 126, Oklahoma 121.

LeBron James Jr is only 12 years old and getting interest from college basketball powerhouses like Duke and Kentucky. After Jr’s participation in this year’s John Lucas All Star Weekend,  LeBron commented that his son has more skill than he did at that age. He may not be wrong. Here’s his latest highlight reel.

Andrew Bogut Breaks Leg In Debut, Curry’s 3 Pointer While Schroder/Howard Argue

BASKETBALL

The Cleveland Cavaliers signed  Andrew Bogut last week in a trade they hoped would boost them to another national title.  In a devastating turn of events during the Cavs-Heat game, Bogut broke his leg within a minute of his debut. According to LeBron James, he heard the snap and knew it was bad. It’s still unclear how extensive the break is and how long he’ll be out, but it’s a sad beginning for their new acquisition. Miami 106, Cleveland 98.

Steph Curry is great at draining 3’s, but it’s still not appropriate to leave him wide open to do his thing. On Monday night, the Warriors were playing the Atlanta Hawks and the Hawks’ Dennis Schroder and Dwight Howard were arguing with each other while Curry was left wide open to make his 3. It’s no surprise the coach benched Schroder at the end of the game. Hawks lost 119-111.

Israel In World Baseball Classic For First Time, Cuban Doesn’t Believe Westbook MVP

BASEBALL

The World Baseball Classic begins today. The Classic brings the world’s best baseball players together to compete while representing their home countries. For the first time ever, Israel is fielding a team and playing in the first round against South Korea. In order for a player to be eligible to play for a country, they need to be able to apply for citizenship of that country, so in order to qualify for the Israeli team (Israel offers citizenship to anyone Jewish), officials had to track down parents’ birth certificates and Bar/Bat Mitzvah certificates. The Israeli mascot is called “Mensch on a Bench“. Players from around the world celebrate this tournament. According to Carlos Beltran, who is playing for Puerto Rico, “As a player, you play for your country, and no one wants to lose. So every player that has the opportunity to play in a [meaningful] game, we’re always going to give what we have.”

BASKETBALL

For some reason, Dallas Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban is telling people OKC Superstar Russell Westbrook should not be considered in the mix for MVP. The only players he’d consider are James Harden and LeBron James. Westbrook has been leading the League in scoring, but Cuban apparently has a bias against Westbrook as he still doesn’t believe he’s MVP status.

Warriors Lose Back To Back, Westbrook Another 40, Jets Release Marshall, Kaepernick No Knees

BASKETBALL

The Golden State Warriors lost their second game in a row for the first time since April of last year. In a tough defeat against the Chicago Bulls, Steph Curry is only 4 of 31 3-pointers in his last 3 games, but with his two 3’s Thursday night, he did manage to pull ahead of Kobe Bryant in career 3-pointers. He’s now listed #11 on the list. Bulls 94, Warriors 87.

Russell Westbrook had another 40 plus night. The Oklahoma City Thunder star posted over 40 points in his third straight game. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough for the Thunder to pull off the win against the Portland Trailblazers. Trailblazers 114, Thunder 109

FOOTBALL

The New York Jets are clearing the decks to bring in younger players. Their latest casualty is 33 year old wide receiver Brandon Marshall. Marshall was voted team MVP for the Jets in 2015 but had a disappointing 2016. Marshall wrote in his Instagram account, “My teammates, such a great group of guys whom I will miss like #Crazy “.

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick will no longer be taking a knee during the National Anthem. By not standing during the anthem, Kaepernick felt his protest ignited a positive discussion of social inequality. Many others felt his protest created a divide in the League and caused controversy.
